COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

Company activities and impact

Over the winter of 2022/2023 our activities were non-financial in nature, with several volunteer days for tree planting and groundwork on the site which we are using for our activities. The volunteer co-ordination itself was done on a voluntary basis. These activities benefited the community by giving local people the chance to get outside, enjoying fresh air, nature and exercise, whilst learning about tree planting as a climate solution. Our activities also enriched the biodiversity of the site in which we worked and created a sense of community amongst the people involved, who came mostly from a 20 mile local radius. In the Summer and Autumn of 2023 we ran a ‘youth mentoring programme’, which involved a series of outdoor, craft and wellbeing activity workshops for local young people aged 13 - 18. All of the 15 young people participating in the programme are local, from within a roughly 20 mile radius. The programme provides vital mental health and social contact support for these young people, many of whom are struggling in some way with issues related to neurodivergence, social anxiety, or school attendance.

Consultation with stakeholders

Stakeholders include the landowners for the site in which we have based some of our activities. We have discussed with them what work we can do on their site as volunteer activities which enhance the environment – having discussed and agreed when and where to plant trees (which they have provided), as well as all of the health and safety arrangements for the activities Other stakeholders are the youth mentoring group members and their parents; with whom we have a process of feedback and consultation as part of the each workshop day’s activities, as well as through an online feedback form, and frequent conversations with parents. This has helped us to develop a programme that meets the interests of the participants; an example of this was a move toward more craft based activities and less gardening/permaculture related activities, as well as the inclusion of requested craft learning activities and outdoor bushcraft games. Other stakeholders include the team of facilitators, who held two formal stakeholder meeting to discuss and agree he strategic direction and identity of the youth mentoring programme, after having taken on feedback from group participants on the subject during one of the workshops. This was also a factor in our moving more toward craft based activities, and in informally using the term ‘Forest Crafts Group’. It also helped us plan our programme of activities and fundraising for the year ahead, including the decision to apply for National Lottery Funding, which we successfully applied for and received
