Over the financial period of 2022/23, we produced two major events as well as a series of workshops and attendance at other functions related to seed-saving, increasing biodiversity in the local environment. Major Events: Exeter Seed Swap 2023 - held at Maketank (Feb 2023) This included a series of talks, workshops and demonstrations that were attended by over 400 people. Exeter Tomato Festival – held at Daily Bowl Cafe (September 2023) – a festival of over 50 varieties of tomatoes that were grown over the 2023 growing season and celebrated as an event in part with the British Science Festival. All activities were free or subsidised at low-cost in order to be accessible to all. Activities: We had a series of events and activities at the Exeter Phoenix Arts Centre, including five seed packing sessions from November 2022 to January 2023. Seed distribution at 2 libraries in Exeter Talk at Exeter Phoenix on chillis with William Jaggard – December 2022 Supply of seeds for Exeter Science Centre event Seed session as part of Dreadnought South West event (early nov 23) A Tomato seed distribution event (March 23) Belmont Park Community Centre Tomato Seedling distribution at 4 Community Centres and at the Central Library Installation at Vivian Westwood shops under theme ‘Born to Rewild’ Tomato seed saving workshop in conjunction with Exeter Cathedral’s nature awareness project Advised on community growing patch in the Heavitree Ward of Exeter We distributed 1000 packets of seeds in Spring 2023 to St Thomas Library and Exeter Central Library which was very well received. We had 3000 packets of seeds to distribute at Exeter Seed Swap Links were made (and others renewed) with other communities and organisations and businesses: Vivian Westwood, British Science Festival, Exeter Science Centre, Exeter Cathedral, Garden Organic, Spirit Seeds, Dreadnought South West; Daily Bowl Cafe; Maketank; Devon Ukrainian Foundation;
Our facebook members group doubled grew from 475 to 800 and we promote all of our events on these pages. We also have an Instagram account of 500 followers and through all these social media points, people are able to indicate their interest and support of our activities or suggestions for improvement. Our stakeholders are individuals and community growing groups across the city of Exeter as well as a residential community for adults with learning disabilities just outside of Exeter who supported out tomato seedling distribution. Audiences are invited to give feedback at all of our events/workshops Our continuity with using Exeter Phoenix as a space and the time of the week (Sunday) has when we conduct many of our activities has led to a very good attendance at all our workshop events there. We had over 40 individuals and community growing groups involved in growing heritage tomatoes for our Tomato Festival. We participate in other events to talk about our aims and hear what people have to say about our work. We worked with funders to meet the aims of their grant criteria as well as with Exeter City Council, also one of our funders. And specifically this year: the British Science Festival to ensure that our tomato project met their criteria for scientific enquiry as well as the Exeter Local Food foundation’s criteria for supporting local food and businesses.
The Directors have paid ourselves for leading workshops, graphic design of marketing materials and project management of activities. These were freelance fees totalling: £2360 There were no other transactions or arrangements in connection with the remuneration of directors, or compensation for director’ loss of office, which require to be disclosed.
