The Makaton language programme uses speech, signs and symbols to enhance communication of those with communication and learning difficulties. I have continued to deliver training online to parents, family members and professionals. I have supported both mainstream and specialist settings to enhance their communication with those they support. These settings have made great leaps in making both their written and spoken information more accessible and have worked towards achieving Makaton friendly status. I have been fortunate to work with some very inspirational people who have successfully embedded Makaton across their settings and family life, exciting others to also attend training in order to communicate more effectively with Makaton users. I feel privileged to be able to support so many local settings and families and receive continuous great feedback about how my workshops and Makaton have positively impacted the communication of those they support. I think this feedback sums up the impact that Makaton has and reason I do what I do. Further feedback can be found on my social media sites. Over the past year over 250 individuals have been made aware of the differing communication needs of individuals and have received Makaton tuition, undoubtedly aiding their capability of communicating with those who find it hard to in a verbal way. Towards the end of this year I have built a good relationship with Liverpool Heart and Chest NHS hospital. I have embarked on a programme of continuous tuition to ensure all staff are competent users and are able to make patients who struggle to communicate in a daunting environment a little more comfortable.
The company’s stakeholders are the families and professionals who attend training and The Makaton Charity who I am licensed by. Participants are invited to complete an online evaluation form after every formal training they have attended and also feedback on social media is welcomed. Many participants inform me that they chose to attend training with me over other tutors due to the positive feedback they have read on my social media platforms. Online feedback forms are submitted directly to The Makaton Charity who oversee the standard of all training provided by tutors. I continue to have regular contact with local families who are at the centre of my CIC and are instrumental in the development of the work that I do. Families and professionals expressed interest in attending both Using Makaton with Singing and Safeguarding workshops which I booked and attended tutor training for in order to deliver to clients. I have delivered numerous workshops since successfully passing these courses and have received great feedback on how the safeguarding course in particular allowed time to reflect on their practices and to ‘do better’ in order to safeguard our most vulnerable individuals. I am regularly asked to create bespoke sessions for various companies in different industries to introduce Makaton and provide relevant signs and symbols to the industry, which I do with great success. I continue to deliver bespoke sessions to families upon request and ensure these are financially accessible. Where possible I invite families of low income to access my workshops free of charge and support them through emails and messages after training in order for them to successfully embed Makaton into their home lives. All the feedback I receive from families and professionals is acted upon and instrumental in the development of my CIC.
