COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

PHOENIX THEATRE COMPANY CIC

Company Number: 11944502 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 30 April 2024

Company activities and impact

The company produces plays and runs workshops with an emphasis of encouraging the local community of all ages to get involved with performing arts. The company started trading in April 2019 and in its fifth year of trading continued with the format of two main performances a year with workshops and events between. Throughout the year audiences have been stubbornly slow to return to pre covid-19 levels and this has impacted the momentum in growth. As the company performed to smaller than anticipated audiences, with increased advertising, production and theatre space costs a loss was expected to the business in the financial year, however there were highlights for our community. Both performances in the year were selected by members during a “pitch a play” where many members put forward their ideas for the company to perform. In July 2023 the company performed the play, “Memory of Water”, with a young team directing a play for the first time and required a cast of older actors which created a good mix for creativity. The play, not a crowd pleasing title, was not a financial success but was nominated for Noda District 8 awards and had a great review from the Noda representative and brought a different type of play to our community. Our production of “The Wolves of Willoughby Chase” in December 2023 was a truly family event both on and off stage. With new members, many families, taking to the stage the production showed the company values of inclusivity with a number of the cast with neuro diverse needs. Unfortunately the unknown play did not play to the masses in terms of audience numbers and a loss was made, and a review from the Noda representative that “Phoenix Theatre Company are a fully inclusive group, and really embody the NODA tagline: ‘Be inspired by amateur theatre’” was particularly pleasing. The company continued to run its membership year from the date of joining continued, introduced last year this has resulted in a small drop in membership fees normally collected in January as the membership fees spread out, we expect these to return to normal next year.

Consultation with stakeholders

Our AGM was held in line with our membership year and was attended by many members in January 2023, this gave an overview of the financial performance as well as our proposals for the calendar year, including our pitch a play night where members were asked to propose the plays for the year. We have run surveys after events asking for feedback to ensure our members and none members are given a voice and help shape the events we run. The plays that we put on were selected from our “pitch a play night” showing how our members help with the direction and content we perform.
