We deliver suicide awareness and training courses to many people within the community, at a range of places and events to raise awareness and inform the general public around suicide, pop-up events, some local groups have informative sessions, and some want more formal training. We have two SMHFA trainers who can deliver this SMHFA training. 43 members of the third sector have completed their Scottish Mental Health First Aid Training. Hundreds of people are more aware of suicide support and help due to our information sessions pop up days etc. 14 family’s received emotional support and guidance signposted to appropriate agencies to receive professional help, assisting them with low mood some with suicidal thoughts and feelings, at times of crisis / attempts. We also supported by signposting families to appropriate help after completion of a family member informing them of the support services through different forms of support.
The courses we have delivered to the Third sector workforce some paid employees however mostly volunteers all who work within community settings in high suicidal risk areas. After each SMHFA course has been completed we ask for feedback this is some of the feedback we have received. “Was a brilliant course left with a lot of knowledge on mental health and suicide awareness. This course was extremely well organised and very informative. Very well presented and at times it was a real eye opener and changed my thinking toward situations. The venue was also top class and we were very well looked after. Would like more of this kind of training. This training was very valuable and has given me confidence to deal with service users in a mental health crisis” “Loved the mental health first aid training was very useful and interesting. This training was appropriate as I gained lots of knowledge that helps me be more aware of situations and has given me the awareness to recognise situations and how to deal with them very good course glad I got the chance to do it” “I don’t feel there could have been any improvement on how this training course was run. All presentations and topics were covered in a professional and timely manner. I felt the class size was perfect for engagement with the instructors and each other. There was plenty of well spaced-out times for food and refreshments which helped break up the day. I finished the 2 day course feeling as though I had gained some valuable knowledge and insight which meant I was equipped to potentially save someone’s life in the future. Thanks for making this training available to myself, it’s appreciated” “Professional training delivered with clarity and consistency. The training was excellent, and should be provided to everyone, especially to people working in the 3rd sector. Raised great awareness how ask if someone is suicidal how to respond”
