Our community group was formed to support the BME community living in Wardley and surrounding areas. It all started with conversations with other BME parents during school runs and we all suggested that having a support network group would be ideal. We organized ourselves to form a committee and we have been running our project for the past few months and we have had quite a few community members getting in touch and seeking social support. As a community we organize integration and confidence-building programs for women in difficult situations and the support we provide helps the Black and Minority Ethnicity community living in Wardley and all near surrounding areas. We organize a number of social activities which includes walks; healthy drinks tea; or coffee in safe environments and this allows for conversations to brew and this helps improve mental and physical well-being thereby avoiding preventable health problems. During the period under review we received funding from The National Lottery Community Fund and the funds were used to hold events and social activities which benefited the community in Wardley mainly the target social group which is the BME Community. The activities entailed social meetings; coffee mornings and a get together event where people shared many stories and experiences and food and refreshments were provided for the event.
The company’s stakeholders include residents and visitors of Wardley and the surrounding areas of Gateshead Borough. The directors of the company have a strong connection with the catchment area having lived and worked in the surrounding catchment area. During the period under review our stakeholders were consulted through a wide research program, this was followed up by consultations of over 100 people from the BAME community; parents; refugees and asylum seekers; and local schools. To cover a wide base of consolations we used a varied medium of consultation’s which included online group discussions; What’s App Group Chats; TEAMS and ZOOM online meetings and face to face focus groups. During these discussions; it was highlighted that most people were struggling with their mental wellbeing; post-traumatic stress from their past life experiences before arriving into the UK and other related problems. The group discussions, brainstormed and explored ways in which mental well-being could be improved. To encourage people to attend the sessions we provide healthy drinks and light refreshments to our volunteers and project workers and all attendees.
