THE ABBOT'S MILL PROJECT COMMUNITY INTEREST COMPANY

Directors' report period ended 30 September 2023

The directors present their report with the financial statements of the company for the period ended 30 September 2023

Principal activities of the company

The mission of the Abbot's Mill Project is to develop an urban hub of environmental and social justice, powered solely by non-centralised, renewable energy, principally through re-instating a water wheel into the old mill race on the site of the former Abbot's (Denne's) Mill

Additional information

Social and Environmental Impact : We continue to have a core volunteer network of around 50 people and an overall supporters list of over 650. A copy of our visual master-plan and our management plan is available on our website www.abbotsmillproject.co.uk/the-arrowhead Below is an outline of our main activities during this period: Volunteer Action Mornings: We hold these on the first Saturday of every month. The sessions involve undertaking maintenance tasks, keeping the site tidy, continuing our habitat restoration programme, adding and checking wildlife nesting and feeding boxes, generally improving the biodiversity of the site. The added aim of these sessions is to build a robust volunteer base, provide opportunities for local people to learn new skills, have fun in the outdoors and meet like-minded people. Habitat Restoration Programme: Following our bank softening works, in July 2022, funded by the Environment Agency, we sowed wild-flower seeds around the area and are pleased to say that these have established well and the site is looking glorious. UN Peace Service at Canterbury Cathedral: In October 2022, we were delighted to be invited to be part of the procession of peacemakers at this lovely service again. Beaver Walk in March 2023: Tom Reid led us on a beaver walk along the River Stour from Fordwich. Although he works for the Environment Agency and has been in the EA's National Beaver Team for the last 18 months, Tom organised this walk in a personal capacity. We had a great time and saw many signs of beaver including gnawed trees and a lodge. A couple of us even saw a splash and a tail! Seed Swap (April 2023): We had a lovely day at our Seed Swap event, despite the rather inclement weather. It was good to be re-connecting with old friends and connecting with new. There was a lot of seed swapping, foraging, sourdough bread and homemade pesto eating, hot chocolate drinking and wisdom sharing. It was lovely to have our friendly robin with us for the whole morning too. We Are Nature: Young People's Permaculture Project: Sadie, one of our directors, wrote an excellent article which appeared in the local Canterbury Community Ad Magazine in June 2023. Great Stour Riverfest September 2023: It was fantastic to be part of the very first Great Stour Riverfest this weekend. @greatstourriverfest We led a tour of our site, which has been recently reopened to the public, following closure after our bank softening works and time to allow the wildflowers to establish. We also did a community litter pick. And our younger members spotted a kingfisher! Water wheel plans: We are still working with Al Fothergill of Green Drive Assembly and with Canterbury City Council regarding our plans. Following our proposal submission, in December 2022 we received a letter from Canterbury City Council, of support in principle to our plans to install a temporary wheel as part of a public consultation process. The process to secure all relevant permissions with Historic England and the Environment Agency is ongoing.
