COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

Company activities and impact

In September we launched our Counselling and listening ear service, we were able to offer this at a single sight within Sunderland as we were able to rent 2 spaces within a community project this allowed to carry out both 1to1 sessions and group sessions. We also were able to offer financial advice to parents by setting up a direct referral link with citizens advice Sunderland, but to also compliment this we hosted Finance Fridays on the last Friday of the month with a citizen advice advisor and give parent carers the opportunity of one on one financial support this was funded by tombola ltd but complimented our advice and mental health service perfectly. We set up our website to allow referrals to be made directly and discreetly through dedicated forms that were set up on the back end of our website. Parent carers were able to also access these forms using QR codes placed on posters in hospital waiting rooms as well on our social media platforms. From September 2023 till January 2024, we welcomed over 31 parent carers into our service to access our counselling offer each receiving 6-8 session depending on need, this was offered both at our site within our therapy rooms and Bridgeview medical centre GP practice where one of our student counsellors was based. Over 140 accessed our listening ear service either at our site or as part of sessions we were running in information sessions within schools around the city. In January 2024 we were approached by Sunderland Hospitals head of paediatrics to setup a permanent referral route for parent carers needing mental health support and guidance after their child received a diagnosis of a disability or additional need. In February 2024, this service was setup with referral routes for both listening ear and counselling with both added to our website via private link that only practitioners had access to. Also, in February we developed a helpful advice booklet to compliment our advice service called the Rainbow Guide, which included over 55+organisations and services (which has since grown exponentially) that cater to, and support SEND families in Sunderland and the surrounding areas. This booklet is given to parents upon their child’s diagnosis to allow them to have a starting point on their journey into the word of SEND. Each organisation and service have their own page with one simple format, serving to myth bust by providing a short bio of their service, contact details and what it is they’re able to offer parent carers who reach out to them. We developed this guide as a tool to use alongside our support model, so families were able to see what’s available to them and more importantly realise that they aren’t alone. The most important thing our Rainbow Guide offers alongside our support is to help the parents make an informed decision on what services are right for them and help stop the spread of misinformation that can contribute to poor mental health. In May we were invited to move into one of the local authorities Family Hubs and setup base of operations. There are currently 5 Family Hubs in the city and we have secured spaces in 3 of them, allowing us to offer support to families at a site that is convenient for them as these sites are geographically central to their respective areas. Since September 2023, our service has helped and supported over 500 parents directly and over 6500 indirectly through our production of our Rainbow Guide after a run of 6500 copies was commissioned by the local authority. We are now looking to continue our service and extend beyond Sunderland and into South Tyneside as we have recently met with Family Hub representatives and manager to offer a similar setup. We are busy working on a South Tyneside Rainbow Guide to compliment our service when we progress into the area.
