Company activities and impact

In this financial year, we applied for and were successful in securing grants from Arts Council England NLPG and ALCS to carry out a third year-long programme of mentoring and development for people of colour writing children’s and YA literature. Much of the directors’ time in the early part of the financial year was taken up with planning the programme of activity, securing and developing relationships with funders, and writing the grant applications. We began the programme of activity in October 2023, with a projected completion date of December 2024. This report covers activity from the launch of the programme in October 2023 to the end of the financial year on 31 December 2023. Where ‘3 of a planned 12’ activities are mentioned, the remaining activities will have taken place in the next financial year. During the financial year in question, our activities have benefited the community in the following ways: - awarding places (pay-as-you-feel) to 8 mentees, unpublished writers of colour and starting them on their 1:1 mentoring journey - appointing 6 paid mentors who are published writers of colour and providing them with initial training and induction - providing 3 of a planned 12 1 hour masterclasses in writing craft, with prize-winning authors Maisie Chan, Tola Okogwu, Danielle Jawando - providing 3 of a planned 12 1 hour book club meetings to discuss craft with an industry professional - providing 3 of a planned 12 1 hour Open Door career and industry focused Q&As with Becky Bagnell, Stephanie King and Safae El-Ouahabi

Consultation with stakeholders

The company’s primary stakeholders are people of colour who write for children and teenagers. The directors of the company are both women of colour, one writer for children and the other, a publishing professional. We are in constant dialogue via our forum, with those who apply to the scheme. We also carry out regular consultation and survey for satisfaction using Google Forms, which enables our community to give anonymous feedback and thus be honest. Our programme of activity this year included a planned formal consultation period, enabling participants to co-create the activity. We asked participants to vote on the books we discuss in book club, suggest topics for masterclasses, and nominate visitors to Open Doors. At the end of the financial year, we had collected this survey data in order to inform our programming in the next financial year 2024.
