Going Concern The Directors have reasonable expectation that the community interest company will be able to continue in operational existence for the foreseeable future and therefore consider it appropriate to prepare accounts on the going concern basis. Income and expenditure Income and expenses are included in the financial statements as they become receivable or due. Expenses include VAT where applicable as the company cannot reclaim it. Grants Grants are recognised in the income and expenditure account in an appropriate manner that matches them with the expenditure towards which they are intended to contribute. The estimates and associated assumptions are based on historical experience and other factors that are considered to be relevant. Actual results may differ from these estimates. The estimates and underlying assumptions are reviewed on an ongoing basis. Revisions to accounting estimates are recognised in the period in which the estimate is revised where the revision affects only that period, or in the period of the revision and future periods where the revision affects both current and future periods.

COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

LEAGUE OF ARTISANS CIC

Company Number: 14560894 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 31 December 2023

Company activities and impact

Every activity conducted by the League of Artisans (LoA) has kept the community, artisan-makers, the Staffordshire region, and wider public at its core. - The setting up of an international Advisory Board in August 2023 This majority woman-led board comprises of artisan-makers, members of indigenous communities, civil society leaders and community experts who contribute ideas and expertise in addition to providing corrective insights to achieve and safeguard the long-term mission. - International consultations with artisan-makers, transmitters and civil society from Asia to Latin American initiated the development of an Artisan Manifesto, planned as a document to highlight the crucial role played by artisans in preserving the cultural heritage and in addressing contemporary challenges in order to secure a more dignified future for artisans. - In recognition of the hidden employment of artisans and home-based workers in the supply chains of large manufacturers and retailers, research into transparency of supply chains involving artisan and home-based hand-workers was conducted. Funded Projects - Unravelling Fibre Shed: in order to shape future engagement between researchers and policy makers, build broader networks to address key research needs, and define key policy areas with levers for regulatory change, we planned a policy roundtable event at Keele University, delivered on Thursday 11 January 2024. This roundtable event is to identify knowledge gaps in fibre shed and water quality and policy response. We will share research carried out by the Universities of Keele and Loughborough. And we will invite speakers from research, industry, advocacy groups and government. Following this event we will meet with further policy makers to share findings and gather feedback and will publish a short public report. - Working towards developing the project and locating funding to create the first ever Leek Textile Week and Leek Textile Weekend as a celebration of the town's rich textile heritage, focussing on skills that transformed the local industry for which Leek became world-famous: silk, dyes, block-prints, the work of Leek Embroidery Society, of former Leek mill workers and others, as well as giving recognition to the contribution of William Morris and his acclaimed collaboration with Thomas Wardle and their connections and collaborations with Indian artisans. The programming being planned is both online and on-site with community-focussed activities that will also appeal to the wider textile-making universe. The project proposal was submitted and we were successful in receiving funding from Support Staffordshire/OUTSIDE Arts in the period. In addition, we received information that funding had been granted by the Arts Council and SMDC for Leek Textile Weekend and Leek Textile Week, with activities to be carried out and funding to be received in 2024. We are planning international webinars in the lead up to Leek Textile Week, focussing on topics rooted in textile practices of the local community, formatted to include community voices from India, Staffordshire and beyond. - Climate Change Toolkit LoA conceived, wrote and submitted a proposal to develop a climate resilience pre and post disaster toolkit aimed at artisan textile communities. LoA regards this as an essential instrument to help large numbers of people, mostly women, get back to work as quickly as possible after natural disasters. Titled "Inspiring Creative Action to Help Artisan Communities Surmount Climate Change Induced Disaster," the project proposal was accepted by the British Council Philippines in December 2023.

Consultation with stakeholders

The stakeholders of League of Artisans activities are artisan-makers, researchers, civil society, advisory board members, local community and project funders. In planning programmes artisan-makers, researchers, civil society, advisory board members and local community participate and/or are consulted. All feedback is incorporated into our planning and, if required, it is responded to by email/phone or WhatsApp. At the end of 2023, we set up a Steering Committee comprising members of the local community for Leek Textile Week. The process of creating the Artisan Manifesto is through a wide consultation and feedback with artisan-makers, researchers, civil society, advisory board members and local community. All activities are informed to the Advisory Board through Zoom meetings, WhatsApp or email, with our first official Advisory Board Meetings held on 18 and 20 December 2023.
