Company activities and impact

We work to implement and offer support to conservation programs appropriate to the maintenance of sustainable populations of key plant species and pollinators through consultation with appropriately qualified external authorities on matters relating to conservation, biodiversity and sustainability Amongst other work: - We funded project seagrass which is building an understanding of the extent of seagrass around islay - We funded 3 bursaries for students for zoology, agriculture and vat studies - We funded Islay Natural Heritage Trust to consult a preliminary assessment of invasive species - We continued our memberships and contributions to a number of local and international conservation bodies

Consultation with stakeholders

The Foundation has extended its subscriptions, memberships, project funding and engagement with local and national conservation groups to support its activities and contribute through its experience. Financial and proactive support of local and national conservation group projects included: Project Seagrass: Funding a three-year project building an understanding of the extent of Zostera marina meadows around Islay. This will create a pathway for awareness building and in turn conservation of this threatened wild marine plant. Understanding and protecting local seagrass will direct benefit the Islay community. Extensive mapping of seagrass meadows, surveying their biodiversity and community outreach and education have already taken place in year one. Invasive Non-Native Species: Funding was provided to Islay Natural Heritage Trust to carry out preliminary surveys of invasive species (Japanese knotweed, gunnera, Himalayan balsam etc) across Islay and Jura and the results were used to scope and cost an eradication programme. Botanic gardens: Funding to Botanic Gardens Conservation International. This has enabled them to do key projects such as the establishment of a seed and seedling bank for endangered species of the southern Brazilian Araucaria Forest, Cloud Forest Sanctuary restoration in Mexico and ex-situ conservation of five Critically Endangered plants of the Western Ghats, India, amongst other projects. Education: Bursaries provided to three students from Islay. Courses funded are a BSc in Zoology, a BSc in Agriculture, and a Bachelor in Veterinary Medicine and Surgery. Memberships: Memberships of conservation bodies including the Bumblebee Conservation Trust, Butterfly Conservation, The Botanical Society of Britain & Ireland, Plantlife and others.
