The WCN helpline started in March 2020 has now taken its 5000th call. In September 2023, with funding from Somerset Community Foundation, we put the helpline on a more sustainable footing and started a partnership with The Lawrence Centre to coordinate and manage the helpline. We have delivered 2,077 prescriptions, and undertaken 2,366 shops. We have helped 829 individuals in Wells and the local villages and some have been helped multiple times. We have provided transport for 292 requests. We have signposted many other callers to appropriate organisations for further or specialist help. In the summer of 2023 WCN launched the Wells Trishaw with the aim of helping those who are elderly, isolated or vulnerable to feel connected to their community. It has currently had over 72 bookings with 10 volunteer cyclists or ‘pilots’, who take people out for a ride around the area. We partner with organisations including The Lawrence Centre and Fletcher House, to offer rides to clients. The Wells Welcome Hub has been running for nearly two years in partnership with Wells City Council. We currently serve over 150 local displaced people who mainly originate from Ukraine. Our English language tuition continues with 3 formal ESOL classes, Beginners to Advanced. We have some retired language teachers who work with small groups and 1:1 as volunteers. Issues raised at our weekly Drop-In are changing as needs change over time. Finding rental accommodation and employment are the main issues now. We have been running a monthly Drop-In in Shepton Mallet which Shepton Town Council have funded. Hubs are required to support all displaced people in their area and Somerset Council have provided training for this. We’ve been supporting one asylum seeker who had received no help until he came to the Hub. Two others have just recently been placed in our area, their needs are different again. We now provide information in Arabic, Kurdish Sorani, Turkish and French. The Hub organises outings for families and offers chess lessons for children, art workshops, drama, and games nights for teenagers. During the pandemic WCN Marshals have supported the roll out of vaccinations for the West Mendip Primary Care Network delivering 38,000 vaccinations. Since then, we have partnered with Locking Pharmacy to deliver Covid vaccinations at St Thomas’ Church Hall as the elderly population needed with over 40 active volunteers. We lobbied hard to ensure Wells people had a local, accessible centre. At St Thomas’ Church Hall: 11,538 jabs have been given, 769 volunteer shifts covered, and an amazing 2,781 volunteer hours. In 2023 we applied to the National Lottery for a grant to pay for a coordinator to take some of the pressure off the WCN management team who are an entirely voluntary body, many of whom have volunteered for four years. As a result we received development funding to put us in a better place to employ someone and move to charitable status.
Volunteer networking and consultation events took place in Summer and December 2023. Following the year end, a Wells Community Day took place in January 2024 on which feedback on WCN and other community organisations was collected.
