Park Lane Stables RDA (Registered number: 09035744)

Report of the Trustees
for the Year Ended 31 May 2024

The trustees who are also directors of the charity for the purposes of the Companies Act 2006, present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31 May 2024. The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019).

Our Vision

Park Lane Stables RDA is a place of kindness, where horses help people and people help horses, and everyone leaves happier than when they arrived.

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES
Objectives and aims
We are an award-winning Riding for The Disabled Group based in Southwest London offering equine therapy: riding, carriage driving, hippotherapy and stable yard activities to hundreds of children and adults with physical, sensory and learning disabilities, plus those with mental health issues and those from disadvantaged backgrounds, to improve their mental and physical wellbeing.

Horse riding, or indeed just being near horses, is proven to be highly therapeutic for a person's physical and mental wellbeing.

Park Lane Stables RDA, based in Teddington, in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, is a friendly and inclusive Riding for the Disabled Association group, offering local children and adults with a wide and complex range of physical, sensory and learning disabilities and mental health needs the opportunity to ride and care for horses and ponies in a safe and nurturing environment.

The Group's objectives uphold the RDA ethos, "It's what you CAN do that counts":
- To make a positive and tangible difference to disabled person's fitness, core strength, balance, confidence, communication skills, enjoyment and general well-being through being with and/or riding horses.
- To promote inclusivity and positively encourage participants to achieve success and maximise their potential within a safe and supportive environment - whether that is just learning to steer a pony unaided, or taking part in additional activities such as Pony Club, or competing at horse shows, sponsored rides and local or national competitions.
- To put the participant first and never stop challenging ourselves to improve the service and experience we offer through new pioneering initiatives and projects to meet the ever-changing needs and demands of our clients and seeking to reach those we currently do not serve.

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES
Caring for our Disabled Users and our Horses
The horses and ponies at Park Lane are kind, honest and steady, and are carefully selected and trained to ensure they are suitable for RDA riders. All sessions are facilitated by qualified coaches and/or physiotherapists. With all Trustees, colleagues and volunteers being referenced and DBS-checked as appropriate. In the main it is our volunteers (who lead the ponies and/or sidewalk), make sure participants have all the support they need to achieve great things in a safe and nurturing environment.

Activities include:
- Horse riding RDA sessions for groups and individuals on Ham Common and surrounding parkland
- Carriage Driving
- Equine therapy sessions with a qualified counsellor
- Stable management and yard activities including wellbeing sessions enabled by volunteers who have qualified as an activity leader
- Tea with a Pony
- Pony visits to schools and care homes
- Pony Club activities including Summer Camp
- Participation in RDA competitions and activities

Review of the year
Summer 2023-Summer 2024
Park Lane Stables operated for the entire year from its temporary home at Manor Farm in Petersham TW10 whilst we carried out the Teddington refurbishment project described in more detail below.

In spite of the difficult weather conditions through the winter, there were over 1,000 participants during the year, demonstrating both the demand for our provision and the breadth of disabilities and related needs for which we have been able to cater. It was also significant that on average our participants took part in at least seven sessions during the year. Not only does this show the pleasure which participants derived from repeat sessions, but it also enabled us to help develop their skills within the scope of their capabilities. Our ability to expand further is constrained by the size of our operations and the number of horses at our disposal rather than demand.

We have sought to broaden our offering as much as possible. We have had over one hundred participants in carriage driving, which provides a popular alternative to riding on a horse (for example for wheelchair users), and plan to increase that in the next reported year. We successfully began equine therapy sessions in February 2024 and ran 21 sessions before the end of May. The premises at Teddington have purpose-built facilities for equine therapy, which will enable us to grow this activity going forward.

We monitor appropriately the demographics of our participants. Their disabilities and needs of our participants cover a broad spectrum ranging from developmental to physical, visual and auditory, whilst some have social or mental health concerns. Age is no barrier to participation. The majority of our clientele are of school age, but their ages cover the full spectrum with some under five years old and others over sixty five.

Around two thirds of our participants come from the boroughs of Richmond or Hounslow, but an increased number this year came from the surrounding areas of west and southwest London and Surrey and a few from even further afield. Their backgrounds cover a wide range of ethnicities.

The charity has not been immune from the rising costs associated with running a stables. It can be seen from the Accounts that we recorded a modest surplus for this year, thanks to contributions from participants or their funders and the generosity of other donors to whom we are extremely grateful. More generally the charity is indebted to the many volunteers who willingly give of their time and experience in supporting our activities.

A survey was conducted amongst parents of participants during the year to evaluate performance. It is pleasing to report that 100% said that their child enjoyed the sessions and well over 90% confirmed that, in addition to an improvement to their core strengths and balance, there had been an improvement in their child's social and communications skills, mental health and wellbeing, confidence and resilience and behaviour and relationships.

The Richmond May Ball Committee selected us as one of their two charities of the year. Details of some of our other major donors may be found on our website.

Public benefit
In shaping the objectives for the year and planning the activities, the trustees have considered the Charity Commission's guidance on public benefit, including the guidance on public benefit and fee charging.

Volunteers
All RDA Volunteers undergo a vigorous recruitment process which includes: two satisfactory references, an enhanced DBS check (if aged 16 or over) and Green Card training before they start volunteering.

We received 205 enquiries from people who wanted to become a volunteer during 2022-23 and 106 of these progressed through the recruitment and training process to become fully-fledged volunteers.. We continue to need new volunteers in order to cope with the demand, so we hold regular recruitment drives, with an emphasis on ensuring there is a good fit - matching volunteer motivation with the needs of our wider community.

ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE
Refurbishment of our Home
The purchase of Park Lane Stables in Teddington was completed at the end of 2021. This enabled the charity to have its own permanent home following the termination of the lease from the previous owner. All involved with the charity remain incredibly grateful to the donors, notably participants in the successful crowdfunder, who made its purchase possible.

The property itself was in need of refurbishment and, in keeping with recognition that the stables are to remain our long term home, the trustees embarked upon an ambitious plan to renovate them. At the time of purchase the property was designated by Richmond Council as a Building of Townscape Merit. Considerable efforts were made to produce a planning application for the renovation which would improve the use of space for our users and horses alike, whilst significantly improving its outward appearance, and complying with onerous planning requirements. In the process the bungalow adjacent to the stables has been converted to provide additional stabling for the horses and a multipurpose room for general use including the provision of counselling and equine therapy services.

Inevitably the whole refurbishment process took a considerable time to complete with the need to prepare initial plans, obtain pre-planning guidance from the local authority and then to make the formal planning application.A detailed tender document was then prepared in order to ensure that the final bill for the charity, in a world of escalating building costs, was within our financial means. With careful control and some further assistance from donors, this has been achieved. The doors have now finally reopened for our patrons.

In the meantime since the property was purchased the charity has been operating at Manor Farm in Petersham. We are most grateful to its owner for allowing us to use his premises.

Trustees' and Governance Report

The work of the charity and the trustees has grown substantially on the back of the purchase of the Teddington stables and its associated high profile, as have the responsibilities that go with this. It can be seen from elsewhere in the report that demand for our services is ever increasing and going forward we will need to ensure that we operate within our means.

We have a small board of trustees with a range of expertise for oversight of the charity and, as we move back to Teddington, we will be considering our future needs. Natalie O'Rourke and her small team of staff have responsibility for the day to day operations and a host of dedicated volunteers who help at the stables. The trustees also have help from certain volunteers who contribute to the oversight including such matters as health and safety, finance digitalisation, marketing and HR.

More generally the trustees wish to put on record their appreciation for all the hard work of the staff and the many volunteers who have produced the outcomes described above possible and, in so doing, enriching the lives of our participants.

We welcomed Gary Woolf to our Board and he is already making a valuable contribution. He has kindly taken on the formal role of chairing the Board following the departure of Neil Rodford, the previous chair. We owe Neil our grateful thanks for the immense amount of work under his three year tenure he put into upgrading the charity's capabilities and governance to reflect what it has now become. We also wish to record our thanks to Jane Mawer who is stepping down as a trustee at this year's AGM after ten years in the role.
