HEYA is a group of Arab women in Nottingham, including refugees, asylum seekers, and students, many of whom experience isolation and disconnection from both their local community and the wider Nottingham community. The group addresses the social and linguistic barriers they face, helping them integrate into life in the UK. This support is especially crucial for newly arrived women struggling with language barriers and unfamiliarity with the local culture. Throughout the financial year 2023, HEYA has actively provided various forms of support to help these women overcome challenges and empower them to build their social networks and gain access to vital resources, volunteering and job opportunities. 1. Integration and Language Support: HEYA helped members integrate into Nottingham society by offering translation services and assistance in understanding important information. We also made phone calls and home visits to further reduce isolation and offer personalized support. 2. Raising Awareness: We organized awareness sessions to inform Arab women about their rights and responsibilities in the UK. These sessions empowered women with the knowledge they need to navigate their new environment with confidence. 3. Community Support During the Cost-of-Living Crisis: HEYA provided culturally appropriate food parcels (Broxtowe Borough council and Himmah)and toiletry packs ( The Hygiene bank in Nottingham) to those in need, ensuring that our community members had access to essential items during challenging times. 4. Health and Vaccine Awareness: Collaborating with the NHS and Nottingham City Council, we worked closely to produce Arabic-language posts encouraging the Arab community to get vaccinated, including specific outreach for pregnant women This ensured that critical health information reached even the most isolated individuals in our community. 5. Physical Activities and Well-being: In collaboration with This Girl Can, we organized physical activities to promote health and well-being among our members. These sessions encouraged women to stay active and fostered a sense of community through shared participation. 6. Funding and Partnerships: We also received funding from the police and Broxtowe Borough Council, which helped us expand our services and meet the needs of our community more effectively. 7. Media Features and Social Media Engagement: We’ve expanded our online presence, with active social media platforms on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, and two WhatsApp groups with over 800 women actively engaged. Through these initiatives, HEYA has significantly enhanced the well-being of Arab women in Nottingham, offering them a platform to connect, share, and support one another while navigating life in the UK. Our ongoing collaboration with local authorities and organizations has been vital in achieving our goals and ensuring that our community is informed, supported, and empowered.
Our key stakeholders include our directors, who meet regularly to strategize and secure funding for our projects. However, our major stakeholders are the vulnerable service users from Arab and African backgrounds living in our local communities. We hold meetings once a month to discuss and shape the direction of our organization. As many of our stakeholders are volunteers actively involved in our projects, we consult every last Friday of the month to identify and address key areas of need. This regular engagement ensures our initiatives are effectively tailored to the needs of our community.
