Current Activities: Activities are as follows which accommodate up to 30 children with special educational needs and disabilities plus siblings and about 35-families [up to 70 individuals per year]: 1) Support sessions i.e. family advocacy: Regular Parent tea sessions – share experiences, talk on a selected topic, share concerns and challenges, training, referrals, advice and signposting to services. 2) Social events and activities: Annual Rice and Spice Annual Festival on 24/06/23 at First site, Lewis Gardens, High street,Colchester; Community Day on the King George V Playing Field Wivenhoe, Essex. 3) Trips & Visits to places of interest: Soft play area in Clacton (food is provided), Jump-street, Alpaca Acres, Chappel Road, Great Tey, Visit to Great Notley Country Park and CuckooWood Local Nature Reserve, Braintree; Strawberry picking at McLauchlans of Boxted; Colchester Wheels for All, Colchester Sports Park; Maldon Water Park – Splash Park; Old Heath Recreation Ground, Old Heath Road, Colchester, CO1 2ER Recreation park picnic and play, Domi-noes pizzas and games - bubbles, parachute, football, skittles and more; Walton on the Naze beach trip (food is provided); Wyvernwood park.; Fireworks, Castle Park, Colchester; Thomas Train Event at Chappel & Wakes Colne Station. 4) Parent training and development workshops and programmes: Workshop 1 by Robert Walker, OT and Charlie Charlton, OT Assistant Sport for Confidence; What is Occupational Therapy? To explore Occupational Therapy approaches of adapting task, activities, and environment to give all the opportunity to engage and participate in physical activity. Workshop 2 by Robert Walker, OT and Charlie Charlton, OT Assistant Sport for Confidence : Benefits of Physical Activity. This workshop will explore the benefits of physical activity and how it supports the development of children and young people in relation to their physical, social, sensory and emotional abilities. Workshop 3 by Robert Walker, OT and Charlie Charlton, OT Assistant Sport for Confidence: Workshop 3 – Sensory Integration: Sensory integration – An introduction into: - What is sensory processing - What are the sensory systems - What are some of the communication behaviours you may see when a child/young person is finding it difficult to regulate. Exploring the fight, flight, freeze, fawn, and shutdown is and how children/young people may present when experiencing this. To explore the use of physical activity as a therapeutic means to enable your child/young person to feel and be regulated. Sensory circuits - An introduction into co and self-regulation and universal recommendations of what to do when a child/young person is becoming dysregulated. Parent tea session with Mitzie Eratra (Nutrition Coach/Nurse), Microbiome: "The hidden ecosystem in our GUT that is responsible for our immune system and mood"; “How does sugar affect health?”. Parent tea session with Hannah Knight, SEND IAS Promotion and Development Worker, Q&A on any questions around SEND; Online safety; Parent tea sessions with Sue Anderton, MAZE CIC, Review of EHCPs/school attendance issues; A virtual Q&A session on all things EHCPs and SEND law,Thomas Emmett , Head of Education, Senior Associate, Birkett Long LLP. 5) Health sessions e.g. counselling [referral service]: Parents/carers can share their challenges, we refer them to specialist services. 6) Sports and exercise: We collaborate with Ability for Sport CIC and Sport for Confidence, Occupational Therapists for delivering our regular weekly sport sessions for families. 7) “The colour monster” Free expression Art class, Theme: Emotions and colours: Art class for children to create cards on occasion of the fourth anniversary of Dream The Change, CIC “Dreams and wishes for future”. 8) Festive sensory stay and play in December at Hythe community centre, 1 Ventura drive, Colchester, Essex, CO1 2FG (hot chocolate and gingerbread men biscuits provided). 9) Respite care, training of parents to become a carer and provide support to our families. 10) Transport. 11) Provide food bags. 12) Fund-raising events. Outputs: We have helped up to 150 families since we started working in various ways – advice, sensory toys, computers, referred them to other organisations, share information, food bags, transport etc.
