The company is intended to serve the Lancaster area, including (but not exclusive to) Lancaster City, Lancaster University, Morecambe and surrounding villages. Following our establishment, we undertook many outreach activities locally to help educate people about the problem and potential that plastic waste represents in line with our mission. We also recycle more plastic by creating more products from ‘waste’ plastic and educating people via these products. Outreach activities include: Outreach and Engagement Events (all ages) Regular volunteer dates on site At least 2x Volunteer dates at Heysham Library At least 5x Volunteer dates at The Bay: A blueprint for recovery At least 5x Volunteer dates at the Sustainability Hub in Lancaster DT presentation at QES National festival of making weekend long workshop Eden Project North community conversations Social value meeting with LCC Eco-I event FunPalace Lancaster Centre Library, Garstang Library Hosted an open house where more than 60 people attended for a tour and information about how our foundry works LCC Community wealth building meetings LEP SME Manufacturing focus group DT Teacher Training Workshop Quarterly Market, Lancaster Supporting Local People Hosted student work placements from local schools Provided traceable waste collection service and local drop-off points for people's recyclable material. Hosted volunteers Hosted monthly Plastic Bottle Top Sorting Parties Provided training and Foundry tours to local individuals, groups and businesses Supporting and Interacting with UK Businesses and Organisations Meetings, partnerships and future project planning with: Eden Project North, Centre for Global Eco-Innovation, FoodFutures/LESS CIC, Lancaster Uni, DecoPublique and Festival of Making, Plastic Packaging in People’s Lives (PPIPL), The Bay: A blueprint for recovery, Dont Ditch it Donate It (DDIDI), Green Lancaster, Staniforth Knives, Lancaster County Council, Lancashire County Council, Lancaster and Morecambe College, REF/USE Lab, Mull, Are You Mad, Lappet Dye House, Ethical Small Trade Association (ESTA), Lancashire Chamber of Commerce, Nelson High School Makers, Bay Film Festival, LICA, The Making Rooms Blackburn, KCut, BM Steel, Groundswell Innovation, Orea, Allday Knives, Wild & Sea, North Sea Rejects, Imprint Works, and the Surface Design Show. Supporting the Global Precious Plastic Community Purchased recycling equipment from a machine manufacturing team in the UK which is affiliated with the Precious Plastic community. Advised and mentored several UK precious plastic teams in the start-up phase - this is something we do continually to try and expand the number and scope of the UK teams at work in the sector. Regular UK Precious Plastic community collaboration and support Purchased moulds from mould makers affiliated with the Precious Plastic community In short, Relic Plastic CIC has provided, and continues to provide many educational opportunities, product development and distribution collaborations and employment opportunities to both people in the local geographic community as well as people and businesses in the global small-scale plastic recycling community.
Local Citizens Citizens have been consulted to raise awareness of Relic Plastic, its aims and the wider plastic issue. Connections with schools, community groups and organisations, as well as the plastic bottle top project has kept us in conversation with individuals looking to develop local knowledge and better recycling systems. Local businesses/organisations We have had a lot of consultation with university partners regarding research projects. We continued to develop a local recycling system with Ethical Small Trade Association members, local businesses, and organisations. Customers and Partnerships We have consulted customers and potential customers of products we make and services we can which has led to successfully launching new products including a website for retail sale and developing our wholesale and contract manufacturing relationships. These consultations have been carried out as focus groups where customers can get hands-on with the product and detailed feedback captured. Informal consultations with waste partners such as Checkpoint Safety regarding the waste we can take from them, how we can offer better services, what plastics are usually wasted and how we can embed a circular design system into the process whereby "waste' becomes a new product used by the same company. International Precious Plastic community The wider Precious Plastic community is generally consulted informally through different channels such as social media, email and messages. The majority of consultation and actions surround the machinery we use and techniques, better enabling the ability to recycle plastic effectively and offer unique products for people to realise the potential of recycled plastic. Products sold: We sold over 20,000 products crafted from plastic material for our clients (including Allday Knives, Orea,Yod & Co, North Sea Rejects, Wild and Sea, Carringtons Coffee, Ecotribo, Imprint Works, Are You Mad, EVAs, Bay Film Festival, Brew ,Groundswell Innovation ) and direct to consumer. But more importantly - thousands of people engaged in recycling via the messaging with each product now in their hands. We developed our sheet press offerings, making 200 sheets sheets, trapping over 4 tonnes of plastic in a longer lasting sheet of plastic to save it from landfill or incineration and began making upcycled furniture using old metal frames from furniture.
