COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

NORTHANTS RECREATIONAL CRICKET CIC

Company Number: 07392026 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 31 January 2024

Company activities and impact

Steelbacks in the Community has delivered a full year of support and activity to our communities, increasing the number of people playing cricket and expanding the groups that choose to engage in other ways, including volunteering, managing and watching. Our focus has stayed consistent, with the main pillars of supporting our 81 clubs across the county, making cricket accessible for all, engaging children and young people, and transforming women’s and girls’ cricket. Through the ECB County Grants Fund, we have awarded £20k to help clubs create welcoming environments, £26k to help tackle the impact of climate change and a further £17k for improving facilities, particularly for women and girls. To make this process fair and transparent, we now evaluate claims anonymously through an impartial panel which meets across three grant cycles each year. Our work in Northants schools helps to increase engagement in cricket through programmes like Chance to Shine and Chance to Compete. More than 68 junior teams played in indoor leagues this season, 500+ children attended one of our skills camps and around 50 children participated in street cricket sessions under Chance to Shine. We continue to generate success through All Stars and Dynamos, which grew again this year to reach 1891, including 551 girls – up 10.5% on last year. The number of girls’ teams in the county grew by 160%, with 173 matches played. We increased the number of women volunteers and coaches, and 30% of those we trained as ECB support coaches were women or girls. We have supported 95 club safeguarding officers, which included training or retraining for 27 people. To help make cricket more accessible, we have delivered table cricket, elite disability cricket. Steelbacks in the Community continues to use cricket as a driver for positive change and life improvements in Northamptonshire.

Consultation with stakeholders

We work closely with a number of similar organisations, including Northamptonshire Sport, Northampton Saints RFC and Northampton Town FC. We liaise closely with our local county cricket partners, including Bucks, Cricket East and Sunrisers women’s regional hub, especially around player pathways and talent ID. Our board members have held meetings and workshops with community representatives, and we listen to all feedback so we can improve the way we work. We share representation with board members from Northamptonshire Cricket Club, which enables us to share knowledge and expertise and ensure close alignment.
