Company activities and impact

In the space provided below, please insert a general account of the company’s activities in the financial year to which the report relates, including a description of how they have benefited the community. The company delivered the international architectural education event ‘EASA Commons 2023’ in various venues across Sheffield. The 2-week residency saw approximately 450 young architects and artists come to Sheffield to undertake a series of 28 parallel workshops on the theme of ‘commons’ and in collaboration with local community organisations. This programme was supported by a lecture series, community forums and exhibitions. The company provided a large, shared accommodation, 3 catered meals per day and a programme of evening entertainment for the duration of the event across multiple venues. Young emerging architects and artists benefitted from a rich cultural programme, direct learning from tutors through workshops and lectures, experimenting with new forms of architecture and arts practices that are embedded within and responding to the needs of community organisations, developing their own practices and research interests, peer-to-peer skill exchange and building collaboration networks across Europe. This was delivered for a low participation fee, with a fee subsidy for any applicant facing financial hardship and a fee waiver for Ukrainian students impacted by war. Members of the public in Sheffield benefitted from attending public exhibitions at Bloc Projects gallery and engaging with public artworks across the city (including performances and temporary installations) produced during the event. Some workshops had objectives to produce architectural objects requested by community organisations to improve their common spaces. For example, a scaffold pop-up DJ booth and dance space was created for a community radio station, a brick bread oven was produced in a public park for Friends of Abbeyfield Park, a new garden for a queer venue and a reconfiguration of an allotment used by refugees.

Consultation with stakeholders

Written feedback was gathered from event participants on the final day of the event. A documentary film was recorded and is currently being edited that captures the thoughts of collaborating community partners in Sheffield, event participants and workshop tutors. Key project delivery partners shared public social media posts celebrating the success of the event. Olivier Tsesmo, Director of SADACCA shared ‘This is what a successful collaboration looks like’.

Directors' remuneration

All directors delivered the event EASA Commons 2023 on a voluntary basis. Directors were paid a small amount towards labour costs associated with the production of a final post-event summary publication (2 directors were paid £1120, 2 directors were paid £560).
