Company activities and impact

Trail Blazers Education is an outdoor learning engagement programme for the most hard-to-reach young people. We are dedicated to improving the well-being and mental health of young people across South East England. Our specialist Therapeutic Forest School and Fishing provision is tailored to support the needs of learners who find accessing their current education setting challenging. Trail Blazers has improved the outcomes of young people who are vulnerable, at risk or have well-being and/or social, emotional, and behavioural needs. We aim to support schools and local authorities in ensuring that the young person continues to access an ambitious curriculum and re-engagement in an education setting. We have closely collaborated with 16 schools in Kent, 2 virtual schools (Kent and East Sussex) and home-educated young people; encompassing Primary, mainstream secondary, and special schools supporting Autism and Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs. Our goal is to expand our influence within Kent, specifically targeting schools in areas, where child poverty is at its highest (Thanet, Dover, Swale and Ashford). This initiative aims to identify vulnerable youth aged 11-16, at risk of disengagement, providing them access to our therapeutic Forest School and Fishing programs. We have currently supported 85 young people in Kent, our program boasts a 100% engagement rate. Impressively, 63% of these young individuals were disengaged from education for up to 4 years or not in education at all and 43% have increased their school attendance due to positive behavioural changes since joining our program. A further 19% have been re-engaged back into full time education since starting our program.

Consultation with stakeholders

The company’s stakeholders are residents of Kent. The directors of the company have lived in Kent all there life, and worked within mainstream schools, and special education for over 15 years. The directors want to support young people who are unable to access education in a traditional classroom environment and give opportunities to young people for aspiration for the future. We ask all schools for feedback after a young person has finished a program with us. This enables us to build a profile of schools needs, and the gaps that are missing within engagement provisions. This enables us to develop areas within the company, and the offer we present to schools and local authorities.
