COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

Year Ending: 31 December 2023

Company activities and impact

Building on our first 3 years rooted in the neighbourhood, where we created space for imagination, dreaming and practical action on the climate emergency and about what is possible, we came into 2023 with real intention to manifest those ideas, to show real tangible ways in how you can make change and continued to demonstrate that we can organise, come together, and by doing so experience the capacity for shifts that we are able to make most directly, in our own lives, and the lives of our neighbours, families and loved ones. We started Neighbourhood Trade School which is the beginning of a school for transition at the neighbourhood scale to exchange the wisdom of our places and democratise access to the skills we need to design, own and govern the climate transition and retrofit of our homes, streets and neighbourhoods. It enabled neighbours to connect, learn, grow, adapt and share together. Skills For Transition draws upon the expertise of partner organisations to share growing techniques, renewable energy, building and construction skills and more to put to use on your street to shape its design, ownership and governance. Through this curated series of classes as part of Neighbourhood Trade School, we hoped to seed cohorts of neighbours with the knowledge and skills to take action within the fabric of their homes and streets. We partnered with the Centre for Alternative Technology for a range of hands-on classes, where we learnt openly with others, gaining insights and practical skills from CAT’s amazing practitioners. We put together Retrofit ReImagined in 2023 bringing together gatherings across the country. From practical, immersive learning from practitioners, to big picture and new public-civic settlement conversations, activating sites around the UK. Through the interconnections, bonds, flows and entanglements between land, material and people, we organised neighbours to attend spaces asking themselves the foundational question of, What if the climate transition and retrofit of our homes and streets were designed, owned and governed by the people who live there? We hosted monthly supper clubs, convening neighbours where we connected, shared food, got inspired by radical and revolutionary ideas, celebrating what’s already being manifested in small and big ways, exploring what else is possible and reflect on what roles we might all play in the wider movement. We held the annual B16 Lunch in August with a whole range of speakers, stalls, workshops, boat rides, performances and activities that run throughout the day. Much of our work is front facing and rooted in the neighbourhood, but we have been working on of number of development projects, some largely to do with the Public Square and redevelopment of the building site.

Consultation with stakeholders

As in previous years, it has always been crucial to ensure we start universally and not make individual judgements on need, people's circumstances based on addresses, appearances, ask them to provide evidence, or binary rules that created layers and layers of inaccessibility at a space that was designed to connect beyond such divisions. The early cultures we adopt, the invitations and experiences shape the future direction and thus, it's essential we shape the platform openly, creatively and universally, as we mean to go on. Invitations were regularly posted by hand across all parts of the wider neighbourhood directly by our team, through deep one-to-one conversations, and particularly through neighbourhood networks we had already built through the previous years, who identified the distinct lack of spaces for a number of communities they were connected to and part of, as well as online Front Room Key registrants.
