Company activities and impact

During the last year WAAC has arranged and run 1 international alpine climbing meet, 3 UK based weekends for summer mountaineering skills, and 3 Scottish winter skills meets. These were all attended by a mix of women from different backgrounds and skill levels, and a range of ages from early 20’s to 60’s. These meets had a mix of instructed courses from female instructors and Guides and provided shadowing opportunities to trainee female instructors. This structure supports female run businesses and promotes stepping stone role modelling in an industry where 10% of Mountaineering Instructors are women. The courses provided by our female instructors ranged from introductory level to advanced coaching. These meets also provide an opportunity for women not on courses to meet in a safe space and ask for advice from the female instructors present about routes and conditions. We organise social evenings to help with story sharing and inspiration. One notable success story from our structure is recorded in this blog post https://www.womensalpineadventureclub.com/blog/peak-connections-finding-friendship-in-the-womens-alpine-adventure-club In summary, 4 women met on our UK skills meets and then developed their friendship and skills, leading to them successfully summiting their first 4000m alpine peak together and being the only all female un-guided rope team on the mountain. Our Facebook group continues to provide a space for women to meet each other and plan their own independent adventures. We have upskilled and connected women to develop their confidence and independence in mountaineering. Please see attached 2023 community survey

Consultation with stakeholders

We completed Community Survey, below is a summary of a Google Survey run and advertised via facebook group and email. The mission statement of Women's Alpine Adventure Club (WAAC) is to inspire adventure, and we want to make alpine experiences available to more women. Growing together through adventure and supporting each other in a community of like minded friends to achieve our lofty dreams. And we wanted to see what members of the community thought. WAAC has become a community of women who support each other in the mountains to achieve alpine dreams, no matter how big or small. We're all about making connections and new friends to fuel out adventures. The survey was completed by the majority of women within the age bracket 25-44, with smaller numbers completing the survey between the ages 18-24 and 45-64. No women over the age of 65 completed the survey. Nationality; 86% were British, with 4% Irish. We had 1 response each from people with the following nationalities: Mixed Asian, Australian, French, Italian, New Zealand, Polish, Polish/British and Spanish. What can Women Alpine Adventure Club (WAAC) provide? 60% of people who responded have completed climbing / mountaineering already but want to learn more on courses. 8% have had no outdoor climbing experience but want to learn. 48% said "I am experienced and I am looking to meet new climbing partners" What will encourage more women into mountaineering? -Women specific events, clubs, trips 74% -More female representation by instructors and guides 72% -A platform to be able to connect with like-minded women 68% -Information about how to get involved in rock climbing / mountaineering 65% The barriers that women have faced: -Not having climbing partners 82% -Physiological needs 13% -Cost of trips / courses 63% -Cost of equipment 42% -Travel availability and cost 29% -Anxiety related to experience / fitness / competency / skill 62% -Lack of confidence to join groups 59% -Lack of confidence to climb harder grade / bigger routes 64% Going further into these barriers we asked specifically on cost of equipment and cost of courses: Cost of equipment: -28% - equipment cost is not an issue -29% - equipment is expenses and makes me hesitant to get into the sport more seriously -35% - equipment is expensive - I make do with what I have got / borrow kit rather than buy the right kit Cost of courses: 5% were not interested in going on courses 17% said course cost is high, I have not been on a course yet but I would like to 64% said they had been on a course but would go on more if they were more affordable 18% said that cost wasn't a problem As well as the above, women told us that as well as instructed courses they want opportunities to meet informally and form partnerships. Since this we have ensured that there are spaces at each event for women to come along independently and it is encouraged that established members of the community help with giving ideas and facilitating climbing partnerships. We have set up a Whatsapp community with groups for different regions and activities so connecting with other women is easier. The instructors running the courses also act as role models for the community. 89% said that having a female instructor or guide made a positive difference. "Getting to know the instructors in WAAC is inspiring and gave me a huge amount of perspective that I could do that one day too" We consulted with the female instructors who facilitate and teach on meets to ensure that they are supported with bookings and the courses that are run. We have taken the above information into account when looking at future events and courses that we intend to run and how we can offer more people opportunities to get the most out of the outdoors.
