The Social Equity Centre CIC focuses on empowering marginalised communities, particularly migrants, by providing them with the tools and knowledge necessary to access public sector opportunities in the UK. Through targeted training sessions and long-term research initiatives, the organisation seeks to promote equality, diversity, and inclusion (ED&I) within public sector employment. Their activities include delivering training programmes that equip first-generation migrants with the skills and understanding required to navigate the public sector job market. Additionally, they conduct research into ED&I practices within the public sector, using these insights to design and offer comprehensive training. This supports migrants in understanding not only how to apply for public sector roles, but also what it means to work in such organisations, fostering greater integration and opportunity for underrepresented groups Social Equity Centre CIC secured two grants in the financial year 2023/24: - National Lottery Awards for All grant which helped fund a project on Public Sector Leadership which consisted of 3 training sessions delivered to migrants in the UK on how to apply for jobs in the public sector - Paul Hamlyn Foundation 3-year grant to run a research activity looking at ED&I and public sector workforce and designing a comprehensive training for first generation migrants to the UK on what working in the public sector means and how to access work opportunities within public sector organisations Before the end of the financial year, an Equity Advisory Board was setup to help guide the organisation in being more inclusive and accountable.
Our stakeholders are: first-generation migrants, public sector organisations, other third sector organisations. The feedback received to date from beneficiaries indicated that our activities are very relevant and unique. The people attending our sessions have fed back stating this was the first time anyone has talked to them about these issues. They felt more confident when looking for and applying for roles in public sector organisations. This will help achieve our aim: bringing more diverse voices into policy making by helping people access work opportunities in the public sector, with a focus on community infrastructure roles. Our regular surveys and evaluation & monitoring are key tools for involving stakeholders in shaping our services. We are also supported by our Equity Advisory Board advising us on how to become more inclusive.
