FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 NOVEMBER 2023

The directors present their report and the financial statements for the year ended 30 November 2023.

Directors' responsibilities statement

The directors are responsible for preparing the Directors' Report and the financial statements in accordance with applicable law and regulations.
 
Company law requires the directors to prepare financial statements for each financial year. Under that law the directors have elected to prepare the financial statements in accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards (United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice). Under company law the directors must not approve the financial statements unless they are satisfied that they give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the Company and of the profit or loss of the Company for that period.

 In preparing these financial statements, the directors are required to:


select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently;

make judgments and accounting estimates that are reasonable and prudent;

prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the Company will continue in business.

The directors are responsible for keeping adequate accounting records that are sufficient to show and explain the Company's transactions and disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the Company and to enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Companies Act 2006They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the Company and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.

Principal activity

She Plays To Win (SPTW) is the largest girls chess organisation in the UK. SPTW teaches girls to play and compete in chess up to and including at the highest levels; open to all girls in primary, secondary or university regardless of chess level or experience.
Our mission is to get more girls playing chess and to provide a pathway for girls to achieve at the elite level of the game.

Business review

We run programs with schools as well as weekly online training sessions, alongside a robust calendar of live events and tournaments.
This year, SPTW put forward the first all girls’ teams competing in the UK’s most prestigious chess league, the 4NCL (Four Nations Chess League). 40+ girls played at this level for the first time, and 40% of girls in the university team, 64% of SPTW Lionesses, and 79% of our Young Stars gained international rating points and increased their positions in national and international rankings.

Future developments

Future aims of the organisation are  to :
- Continue with 4 teams in the 4NCL (National Chess League) 
- Run the yearly flagship girls tournament in June, with 100+ girls who qualify to attend. 
- Enter the European Club Cup, the prestigious European team competition. 
- Simultaneous exhibitions for girls to play against some of the world's top female players. 
- Weekly online girls training, at a low cost and free for girls on Universal Credit. 
- Elite training for girls representing England at World and European Youth events. 
- Further the University girls scene, and create a league for university girls. 
- Grow the Primary and Secondary Girls Schools online league, which regularly has over 150 UK girls competing every half term. 
- Continue the Pairs Invitational event, a yearly event for the very best top young boys and girls to play as a team.
- Promoting grassroots chess across the UK with regional events for girls to get chess tournament experience.

In preparing this report, the directors have taken advantage of the small companies exemptions provided by section 415A of the Companies Act 2006.

1.Accounting policies

Basis of preparation of financial statements

The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention unless otherwise specified within these accounting policies and in accordance with Financial Reporting Standard 105 the UK and the Republic of Ireland and the Companies Act 2006.

The following principal accounting policies have been applied:

Income

All income is recognised once the company has the entitlement to the income, it is probable that the income will be received and the amount of income receivable can be measured reliably. 
Donations are received by way of sponsorship, grants and gifts and is included in the financial statements when receivable.
Income from charitable activities include income received by way of course fees and tournament tickets and is recognised when the events take place.
