Trust (Registered number: SC184105)

Report of the Trustees
for the Year Ended 31 March 2024

The trustees who are also directors of the charity for the purposes of the Companies Act 2006, present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31 March 2024. The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019).

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES
Objectives and aims
The objectives of the charity are twofold; firstly to advance the heritage of the historic castles and property, including artefacts, paintings, and others historically belonging to the family of the MacDougalls of Dunollie; and secondly to advance education through public display and interpretation of the said assets; preserving and retaining the artifacts, paintings and others in Scotland.

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES
Significant activities
We are delighted to report on another busy year for the MacDougall of Dunollie Preservation. A varied and dynamic year of activity has taken place supported by a large number of staff, volunteers, and partners.
As ever, the busiest time for the MacDougall of Dunollie Preservation Trust is during the seasonal opening of Dunollie Museum, Castle and Grounds. We were pleased to see some continuing improvements on the previous financial year including an 11.5% rise in visitor figures from the 2022 season - we welcomed 18,524 visitors onto the site between April - October 2023, as well as increasing our earned income by 35% across admissions, retail and catering in comparison to 2022.
In addition, our events programme has gone from strength to strength, with a series of well planned and attended events under the stewardship of Siubhan Griffin - 2023 visitors have been entertained by everything from An Evening with the Hebridean Baker, to a day of Pirates and Mermaids and after-hours live music.
Despite our successes, the Trust continues to operate in a challenging environment, with rising costs such as insurance, electricity and staffing making it difficult to generate a surplus and build back the reserves expended over the pandemic. This has resulted in a net loss for the 2023/2024 financial year, with costs set to rise further into 2024/2025. The Trust's small working finance group will continue to work with the General Manager on mitigating these circumstances, with opportunities around fundraising and individual giving set to be a priority in the next financial year.
In addition to the income earned through trading activities, the Trust is once again enormously grateful for the support Dunollie has received through grants and donations, including £4,000 through the School of Social Entrepreneurs Heritage Trade Up Programme, which has supported the development of weddings at Dunollie Museum, Castle and Grounds. £35,950 through Museums Galleries Scotland Resilience Fund, which is being used to relocate the Kettle Garden Café to the World of Trees. £7,292 from the Scottish Government Mental Health and Wellbeing Fund, which has supported volunteering in Dunollie's Woodland Grounds.
We were also delighted to learn of our success with a £166,917 grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund for a 30-month project to document and engage audiences with the collection of historic objects cared for by the charity. The project, which will cost £175,806 in total, started in January 2023, and we are also very grateful to the Oban Common Good Fund for their £4750 contribution to this project.
There have been some staff changes since the last report.
In January 2022, we welcomed Shannen Calderwood as the Curatorial Modern Apprentice through the Argyll Aspires Programme, administered by CHARTS and Museums Galleries Scotland and funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Shannen has since taken on the role of Collections Development Officer for the National Lottery Heritage Funded project Sophy & White: The Collections Unboxed. Joining Shannen on this project, we welcomed Anna Bain in January 2023 as Education and Learning Officer.
Siubhan Griffin agreed to take on the role of Operations Manager during the winter of 2023 and has done a wonderful job during her first full season in this role, as well as providing continued creativity when it comes to Dunollie's programme of events.
We owe thanks to our seasonal team - Ali, Judith, Katie, Nina, Charis, Beckie, Ethan, Julia and Ashleigh, as well as tour guides Shannen, Flora, Jamie and Christine, for all their hard work.
We were sad to lose Kylie Yap after 6 years in the role of Retail and Facilities Assistant, as well as Iris Piers, who occupied the role of Weddings and Marketing Coordinator, and wish them all the best in their next endeavours.
At the 2023 AGM, we were delighted to be able to appoint two new Trustees - Ann MacKenzie and Cat Rushmore. Cat has volunteered and worked in museum roles spanning front of house, educational facilitator, curatorial and collections management, and remains a keen museum visitor. For the last 6 years, Ann has been employed with the Scottish Association for Marine Science as a Compliance Manager and Company Secretary, having previously been an assistant regional manager with Visit Scotland. This following 15+ years as the Regulatory Relationship Manager for the Co-operative Bank, Savings book of approximately 2 million accounts.

We were very sorry to receive a resignation from the Board of Trustees from Mike Robertson and we wish to thank him for all his valued advice and support in the years served on the Trustee Board. Mike will remain as Company Secretary, a role which he has held in longstanding.

Work has continued to conserve and improve facilities at Dunollie Castle, including an appraisal of the cliff face and standing walls. This work will pave the way for the final phase of conservation work, and we would like to take this opportunity to thank both the North American Clan MacDougall, Historic Environment Scotland as well as the individual donors who continue to make this important work possible.

Report of the Trustees
for the Year Ended 31 March 2024

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES
In addition to Dunollie Castle, the Trustees have continued care of other historic buildings in their ownership - namely a watching brief over Gylen Castle, and two historic properties, the Ferryhouse and the Schoolhouse, all on the Isle of Kerrera. Whilst the former remains empty awaiting repairs, the Schoolhouse is currently in use as a much-needed rental property for Islanders.
Another focus in 2023-24 has been the care of Dunollie's historic collections of social history and textiles. Through the work of Shannen Calderwood (Curatorial Modern Apprentice for Argyll Aspires) we have been working behind the scenes on collections management and preventative conservation, as well as ensuring we are sharing some of the stories behind the objects in our care, everything from the beautiful cream beetlewing dress to photographs taken by Hope MacDougall documenting the history of Argyll women in the fishing industry. Our Curatorial Group opened the next 1745 House temporary exhibition in March 2024 and we are enjoying to sharing Dunollie's history of medicine and magic in the 2024 season.
Through the work of Jamie MacGregor, we have been able to continue the Dunollie Links Programme of volunteering and community development. During the 2023-24 financial year, volunteers accrued a fantastic 3,397 hours of time spent volunteering across a varied set of activities, such as in the 1745 House, Dunollie Archives, Grounds and Tourguiding. We are thoroughly grateful to our volunteers for the support they give Dunollie and are essential to the smooth running of the charity.
This programme also covers much of our engagement work with the local community and we have been pleased to continue support for the New Routes Wellbeing Group, Threads and Yarns, the Gaelic Conversation Group, as well as pathways support for High School pupils and workshops for primary and nursery age children.
As we enter our new season, we want to say thanks once again to our wonderful team of staff, volunteers and supporters. The success of the Trust is a group effort from many passionate and enthusiastic people - their efforts are hugely appreciated.

Independent Examiner's Report to the Trustees of
MacDougall of Dunollie Preservation
Trust

I report on the accounts for the year ended 31 March 2024 set out on pages six to eighteen.

Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner
The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the terms of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended). The charity's trustees consider that the audit requirement of Regulation 10(1)(a) to (c) of the Accounts Regulations does not apply. It is my responsibility to examine the accounts as required under Section 44(1)(c) of the Act and to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

Basis of the independent examiner's report
My examination was carried out in accordance with Regulation 11 of the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts.

Independent examiner's statement
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention :

(1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that, in any material respect, the requirements

- to keep accounting records in accordance with Section 44(1)(a) of the 2005 Act and Regulation 4 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations; and
- to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and to comply with Regulation 8 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations

have not been met; or

(2) to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

Stocks are valued at the lower of cost and net realisable value, after making due allowance for obsolete and slow moving items.

Taxation
The charity is exempt from corporation tax on its charitable activities.

Fund accounting
