Walking Forest is a 10 year public art work, led by artists that shares skills, expertise and knowledge about the natural world; the climate and ecological emergency and cultural change. We work to inspire female leaders in the UK and internationally to stand up for the natural world and the wellbeing of our planet in their communities, and to share knowledge with existing activists and support for a new generation of community artists and activists. Our work is covered by local, national and international journalists, including feature articles in Guardian newspaper and on radio including Woman's Hour on BBC Radio 4. During this financial year we have continued our work with Universities of Birmingham and Exeter, with whom – as part of UKRI funded Future of UK Treescapes – we are collaborating on MEMBRA until 2025. We have continued to develop partnerships with community, national, international organisations including Galgael, Salt Road and Crick Lane Gardens in Birmingham; the National Forest and Wild Rumpus in the East Midlands and FOQUS a creative social project in Naples, Italy. MEMBRA Creative Collaborations, March 2023 - March 2024 Ring Of Truth, a MEMBRA creative collaboration led by Lucy Neal and involving artists, scientists, a classicist and Lawyer for Nature Paul Powlesland. It resulted in the creation of a skeleton legal argument for the Rights of Nature and a performance text. A participatory performance of the text at Timber Festival on 8 July ‘23 for 150 people of all ages was well received. The project was profiled in Rob Hopkins From What if to What Next podcast and on the Dark Mountain website. Cycles, a MEMBRA creative collaboration led by Ruth Ben-Tovim. A cohort of 45 artists, scientists and members of the public from the Walking Forest network participated in creative activities, connected to the equinox and solstice dates, from October 2022 to Winter 2023. The outputs from this programme are now being developed into a participatory art work to share with the wider public. Lab Coat, Tree Salutation and Forest Makers Game, MEMBRA creative collaborations led by Shelley Castle. A decommissioned lab coat was embroidered with details of the human and tree circulatory system and the vagus nerve, part of the human nervous system that is particularly linked to stress. The coat was embroidered by the scientists, and 20 women from the Walking Forest network aged 18 to 81. Working with a classicist from Exeter and scientists from Birmingham to develop the new Forest Makers game, which has been played by scientists at Birmingham University and will be tested with the wider Membra Treescapes project in Summer ‘24. A tree salutation yoga sequence was developed between a yogi and a scientist, to be practised for a tree that has been the subject of research and, as a result, is dying. The outputs from these collaborations will be developed in 2024 to reach a wider audience. April 2024 - Walking Forest led a participatory bike ride in London with a group of women, commemorating the suffragettes, connecting past and present activism with climate justice and Earth defending. May - October 2023. Design, relationship building and leading Tree Nursery public engagement workshops with Crick Lane and Women’s Dolphin Centre, including a visit to Birmingham Institute of Forest Research forest. June 2023 - Bonn Climate Conference. Walking Forest offered a free workshop exploring their work, undertook seed gifting with global Earth defenders and held meetings with activists and organisations. July 2023 - Partnership visit to Galgeal, Glasgow including building connections and researching a ‘keening’ workshop to mourn the dead or dying, with Celtic singer Madge Bray. September 2023 - Creative Lab at Blackadon Farm, Dartmoor. Ten scientists and academics came together to share their research, explore interdisciplinary possibilities and how their work impacts the world, curated by the Walking Forest artists. November 2023- March 2024 Fundraising, strategy development and planning for final year of Membra delivery year - sharing the outputs of creative collaborations, and policy decisions work.
Our stakeholders are people to choose to become part of the extended Walking Forest network through taking part in talks, camps or projects. They are also academic, third sector and NGO partners who fund, guide and support our work. We work closely with these stakeholders to develop programmes and co-design projects. We gather feedback from our events and activities which inform how we work and help us develop our programmes going forward. We have a comments and contact form on our website where we receive feedback and input from the general public.
