Our mission is to build inclusive communities that support personal growth, develop a connection in nature and offer opportunities for outdoor experiences. Our bespoke and tailored sessions will benefit the target groups by offering up a safe place for mindful craft and play to take place with qualified forest school leaders. Outdoor skills such as basic tool use, nature crafts and gardening activities will provide participants with physicality, camaraderie, improved well-being and a range of learning opportunities about the natural environment alongside personal development skills too. Personal development benefits include improved communication skills, problem solving skills, resilience and greater self-esteem and confidence as well as a sense of achievement. Health benefits from being outdoors and mindfulness activities such as crafting, gardening, meditation, yoga and outdoor free play include lower blood pressure and reduced stress levels. We also hope to reintroduce FUN into the lives of those with whom we work. We build confidence, raise self-esteem and support teamwork and personal development using a variety of programmes and courses. We offer weekly sessions in the Market Garden, in Platt Fields Park and have been part of events the wider City Centre to bring nature connection to the urban environment. Platt Fields Park is an inner-city location, in which we provide access to a tranquil and inspiring garden for South Manchester’s residents. The Conker Crew Collective has benefited the local community in the following ways: ‘Wheel of the year’ and seasonal special family weekend events held in Platt Fields Park, Fallowfield. These events engage families in with seasonal activities and provide a hot meal through campfire cooking, with half of tickets offered for free for those on low incomes. Weekday preschool forest school sessions encourage families to get outside in all weathers and provide warm drinks, snacks and informal support to parents, with tickets purchased on a ‘pay as you earn’ basis and free tickets available for those in need. Provided a free nature-based play area for hundreds of families over the course of four days of the May Bank Holiday weekend as part of the Manchester Flower Show in the City Centre. Worked collaboratively with Projekts Skatepark to host a ‘Conker Crew Takeover’ in the City Centre where forest school activities were combined with skateboarding lessons for young children, 25% of tickets offered free for those on low incomes. Provided low cost Home Education sessions to support children’s mental health and engagement with nature. These include group campfire cooking. Hosted Willow weaving events and ‘Frazzled Mum’s club’ to support adults wellbeing and provide mindful seasonal crafts and activities, with 25% of tickets offered at no cost to those in need. The Conker Crew Collective has supported MUD CIC by developing and helping to maintain the Market Garden’s children’s area, and by providing financial renumeration for the use of the children’s area of the Market Garden in Platt Fields Park. The company has provided part-time employment to 8 local residents.
The company’s stakeholders are residents (children and parents) of South Manchester and the land owners MUD CIC. Two of the three directors of the company have lived and raised their families in the area for a number of years and developed the business model for the company based on their experience of talking to other local parents. All the directors are experienced forest school leaders. We consult children informally at each session in an age-appropriate manner. This can be a suggestion box for older children, coming together around the campfire at the end of a session to share children’s views of the sessions. For younger children feedback can be through observation informing planning for the following weeks. During adult sessions, time for feedback is built into the close of each session. We share experiences and discuss what would be most valued for the forthcoming sessions. We use social media to gage interest in new events, times and locations of sessions using polls and message requests primarily on Instagram and Facebook. In addition, we distributed feedback questionnaires at our ‘wheel of the year’ events. We meet with MUD informally when the directors are on site to discuss day to day issues and have a formal directors meeting at least every 6 months to discuss projects and work cooperatively to improve and develop the children’s garden.
