During this financial year, we successfully applied for the Schools Out, Healthy Holidays Funding through Kirklees Council to ensure our holiday provision is accessible to children and families within our local community. In 2019, the Newsome Ward, where we are based, was ranked 3,920 out of 32,844 in England, placing it among the 20% most deprived neighbourhoods in the country. Several neighbouring wards also fall within the top 10% of deprived areas, with at least five primary schools located in these regions. Given the current economic climate, we recognise that, - Access to paid sports and physical activities is not a priority for parents/carers. - The cost of living is impacting some families’ ability to afford basic food provisions. - Financially struggling families find school holidays challenging to manage, as work often takes priority, but they cannot afford childcare and the extra financial pressures it brings with having children at home. We also know that these deprived wards have a high number of children from historically underrepresented groups, who, according to the latest Sport England Active Lives survey, are less likely to participate in sports and physical activities. Our funding enabled us to offer the following free services to children on free school meals, - Holiday camp provision from 9 am to 3:30 pm for parents to utilise. - Access to over 30 different sports and physical activity sessions throughout the week. - A skills passport, where children learn about psychological and social skills, collect stamps, and earn rewards. - Healthy lunches and snacks, along with information on maintaining a balanced and healthy diet. Our Holidays camps ran across the following weeks, - w/c 11th April 2023 - w/c 31st July 2023 - w/c 21st August 2023 - w/c 14th August 2023 - w/c 7th August 2023 - w/c 1st January 2023 With the following number of children, - April 23 - 1 week - 20 children (maximum 20 spaces) - Summer 23 - 4 weeks - 112 children (maximum 120 spaces) - Winter 23 - 1 week - 27 children (maximum 30 spaces) Subjectively, we have observed the profound impact the project has had on the children who have attended. Notably, we’ve seen a significant boost in their confidence and self-esteem, enhanced physical literacy, and their heartfelt gratitude for the opportunity to participate in the camps
