Dragons Voice has broadcasted a total of 22 radio shows in Mandarin and Cantonese. After the live shows at All FM 96.9 studio, we upload them onto mixcloud.com as the reach of All FM 96.9 community radio is only around Manchester. Anyone across the world with internet access can listen to our shows on Mixcloud.com [Link www.mixcloud.com/DragonsVoice]. The benefit to the Chinese community is that they have content in a language they can understand. The benefit to ALLFM is in the form of subscriptions towards its licence cost and promoting diversity in their programmes. The shows discussed a range of topics. In October & November 2023, we organised a visit for our volunteers to our local Recycling centre and then broadcasted content related to climate change and the need to care for our environment, with recycling as part of the action to make some change. We presented content on festivals (Christmas, Qingming in April 23) and health issues (asthma in May 24, exams and how to deal with exam stress in June 24). At the end of June, we broadcasted vital information relating to registering for voting and the need to bring photo ID to polling stations. In July we had 2 musicians talking about their careers and in Aug 24, we interviewed a care link worker who introduced his organisation’s service to support carers and their families. The content reflect community events and guests were invited to speak as part of our collaboration with other organisations. The radio broadcasts help to publicise services which the Chinese communities may not be aware of. Having a range of content helps to promote interest for those who are isolated and/or lonely. Student placements – we offered 2 students from Manchester University some placement experience over 3 months from January to March. 2024. We organised supervisors for them and they helped Dragons Voice set up a presence on some Chinese social media sites as well as on Instagram. They also contributed to broadcasting. We concluded our partnership with People’s Voice Media in the gathering of migration stories in March 2024. The stories and archive research that we did went towards the compilation of a resources’ toolkit and a short animation. We launched these resources at 2 events. The first was with the Chinese community on 17th February 24 at our Chinese New Year (CNY) celebration event at a local library and the other at Manchester Central Library as part of their Coming In From The Cold (CIFTC) project funded by Heritage Lottery Fund. The benefits are: there are resources now available online for anyone who wants to talk about migration issues and the community that were involved in the project can see the end results of their hard work which can be shared and used by everyone. Dragons Voice CIC organised and participated in Manchester Council’s Walk for Women on 9th March 24. We organised participants, designed posters and had a great time chanting and taking part. The people who joined us were families and our volunteers, some of whom have never participated in this type of activity before thus providing new experiences for them. Our posters were admired by other participants who took photos with these posters and our members, helping to foster community harmony. From end of January to beginning of March 24, we held a series of 6 art and craft workshops funded by Greater Manchester Integrated Care Partnership. Longsight Library provide rooms free of charge for these sessions and for our CNY celebration event when it became known known that we were not charging the participants. We employed 3 freelance artists to facilitate the sessions and the feedback from the participants; some who attended all the sessions were positive. 15 slots were available for each session with 3 sessions being taught in Mandarin and 3 sessions taught in Cantonese. A total of 90 slots were available with 88 slots used. The sessions focused on traditional Chinese arts and craft and were open to participants of Chinese origin aged 50 and over. We had to limit the activities and who could participate as the funding was only for under a thousand pounds and we had to identify a target group for the funding. We provided all the art materials so the participants did not have to pay for anything. The benefit to the participants were evaluated and included making friends, learning new skills, having social interactions, enjoyment and promoting mental health. The funders requested to use us as a case study when they saw the evaluation feedback and photos. This is now online at https://www.gmcvo.org.uk/case-studies/dragons-voice-cic CNY Event 17th Feb: We held an event for our local Chinese community members and opened it up to locals who use Longsight Library. We registered over 80 participants who performed - playing musical instruments, traditional Chinese and classical Indian dances, singing in duets and as a choir, modelling traditional “hanfu” ( Chinese costumes) and reciting poems. Dragons Voice CIC gave each performer a gift voucher as a thank you present, as during Chinese New Year, exchange of gifts are common, thus sharing a slice of Chinese traditions with our volunteers and the local community. Volunteers from Dragons Voice CIC supported International Mother Language Day at Longsight Library on 21st February and the Libraries Fun Day June 15th by providing opportunities to learn to speak and write Mandarin. We offered Chinese calligraphy and speaking sessions for attendees on the 21st and Chinese arts and crafts on 15th June which further shared examples of our culture with the local communities, at the same time supporting the library. Dragons Voice CIC held an annual “Volunteer Dinner” at a local Chinese restaurant for all our volunteers to thank them for their hard work, time and goodwill. We invited staff from AllFM Community Radio station to show our appreciation of their support. Around April and May, we collaborated with ALLFM in a National Health Service project to recruit and interview Chinese people who had refused Covid vaccination. We recruited 8 participants and recorded their responses. One of our volunteers was employed to undertake this bulk of this project. We did not advertise the position outside the organisation as the skills that we required to complete this project are not readily found elsewhere – the ability to speak Cantonese, have the networks to be able to recruit participants, be able to use technology to record the interview, edit the separate audio tracks to make sense of the content and create a coherent structured discussion that the recipient can analyse. The benefit is this piece of work can contribute towards understanding of reasons and barriers that Chinese people have towards accepting the Covid vaccination. We continue to identify what the Chinese communities would like to listen to and activities for them to participate to enrich their lives. We intend to work collaboratively with other organisations to help achieve our aims as stated in our community interest statement.
Dragons Voice CIC’s stakeholders are our volunteers, ALLFM community radio station, people who attends our activities, our partners and the listeners of our radio shows. One of DV’s director co-chairs the ALLFM Volunteers Steering Group which meets monthly to report and communicate with ALLFM charity on the volunteers’ concerns and questions to enable the organization to run/manage the community radio station. That director represents Dragons Voice at the volunteers’ meetings and acts as a bridge between Dragons Voice and the community radio station ensuring we are supporting the radio station. We invited all our volunteers and their friend, family to our open Chinese New Year event. We opened the event to the local community and also invited volunteers from AllFM radio. At the end of the event, we did informal evaluations and the feedback was “the community would like a bigger and better Chinese New Year event next year”. Dragons Voice will look for funding to host a similar event in 2025. We have maintained communication with the professor we worked with on the extending employment for migrants’ project and he continues to support our activities, attending our Chinese New Year event on 17th Feb. 2024. After the Be Your Creative Self project, as evaluation we surveyed the participants to see if they would attend creative sessions in future if we could find funding and they all said they would and some have asked recently when we are holding the creative sessions again. We have planned for 2 taster days, to be funded by DV, in September and October 2024 to ask the local community what creative forms they would like to have/attend as a precursor to applying for funding. After the students’ placement, 3 members from DV attended a meeting with the University of Manchester and other placement providers to review and discuss social responsibility of taking students. The sharing of our experience resulted in new learning which will be used for the next student placements in 2025 – having more structure and organise regular meetings with their supervisors, to have students contact details apart from the university emails, to meet and interview students prior to start rather than relying on CV. At Longsight Library events (National Mother Language Day 21/3/24 and Library Fun Day 15/6/24) we offered Chinese calligraphy and Chinese crafts sessions, which received positive feedback not just from participants but also from library staff. Comments include “This is incredible, knowing about a different culture” and “Very nice, new skills to learn”. Dragons Voice CIC is in the process of working as partners with Longsight Library to apply for funding from the Arts Council to provide creative sessions at the library. The library has been very supportive of our efforts and helps with printing and publicizing our activities. The director have regular email communications and had some face to face meeting with the library’s Service Development Co-ordinator to plan and discuss approach to applying for funding. We concluded the partnership with People’s Voice Media in May 2024.There was no formal evaluation of the partnership but informally the lead for the project has commented that Dragons Voice has “gone beyond the expected” Whilst it is difficult to find out who our listeners are specifically but the statistics on Mixcloud.com showed that our 22 shows have had listened to 1,057 times.
