Benefits: - Help with the integration of the new people moving to the city, especially those with limited finances. Activity 2: Provision of free skateboarding sessions for underrepresented Skateboarders in Manchester Description: Throughout the period of Feb 2023 – July 2023 we delivered fortnightly free outdoor skateboarding sessions with young people from inner city Manchester in partnership with Moss Side Millennium Powerhouse Youth Centre and Manchester Active. These wew mixed gender sessions with young people from ages 8 to 16. All children were receivers of free-school-meals. These sessions involved trained Skate Manchester Coaches getting the participants equipped with padding, helmets and skateboards and then running a series of skateboarding lessons. Sessions lasted for 2 hours. Benefits: -participants got to learn new skills about balancing, supporting each other and overcoming their fears - Parents came along to watch and were happy to see their kids achieving new skills - Participants have been enabled to start skateboarding as a new activity they can carry out in their past-time - Making the skateboarding community in Manchester more diverse, especially as >90% if participants were non-white and from a broad range of ethnic origins.

Consultation with stakeholders

The stakeholders are; Our stakeholders are [1] the young people and adults who comprise the community of skateboarders in Manchester and Greater Manchester; [2] the wider population of young people, including those who are Not in Employment, Education or Training (NEET), who may benefit from engagement in skateboarding and/or related creative/cultural activities; [3] our 6 qualified coaches/mentors for beginners’ skate sessions; and [4] our delivery partners in local government, the charitable and voluntary sectors, youth services and the creative industries. Consultation during the reporting year included: online and in-person engagements with groups [1] and [2] through our monthly Skate Manchester meetings, which to date have involved >50 young people, members of Manchester Council, Researchers from Leeds University, Salford University and members of the Manchester City Council Urban Planning. Consultation topics in these regular group meetings include - Opportunities to create free-to-use skate spaces - Supporting inner-city communities with lack of skatepark facilities with free skateboarding sessions - Developing a donation program where unused but fully functional skateboard equipment is gathered and redistributed to those who cannot afford skateboards - Developing a relationship with the City Council to allow Skateboarders to access public space in the city safely - Developing plans and fund-raisers to revamp underused or damaged skateparks. In response to these consultations Skate Manchester has established a regular free-to-use skate session every 2 weeks at the Millennium Powerhouse for all ages which is supported by its volunteer members as mentioned above. With group [1] we took part in online 1-to-1 and group Mental Health and Suicide Prevention training, with feedback between our participants, us and the training providers.
