URBAN GOODIES CIC

Directors' report period ended 28 February 2024

The directors present their report with the financial statements of the company for the period ended 28 February 2024

Principal activities of the company

Our ready meal project was launched in 2023, and was a game changer, using surplus food from our community fridge we took a leap and thanks to a pilot grant from the Heart of England Community Foundation we managed to sell 2300 meals to over 9000 people by November 2023. Unfortunately due to a lack of suitable premises and the pressing need to offer delivery of our regular surplus food parcels from the community fridge we had to pause the ready meal scheme. Despite upheavals with premises and Directors leaving due to other commitments, the remaining Directors have donated thousands of hours of their time ensuring our community receive continuous surplus food deliveries. We have already delivered food to 3628 individuals redistributing and saving from landfill tonnes of food waste. We were awarded the BBC CWR Community Group of the Year Award in 2023 in recognition of our work.

Political and charitable donations

Many thanks to Heart of England Community Foundation, Hubbub, Neighbourly and all the individuals and friends who have supported us either through donations of food items or financially. Special thanks also to Marks and Spencer and Aldi for their ongoing support providing us with surplus food every single week.

Company activities and impact

Our mission at Urban Goodies is clear: to combat food poverty, promote healthy eating, and uplift those who are disadvantaged. We transform surplus food from supermarkets into nutritious, ready-to-eat food parcels, and deliver them across the city using eco-friendly transport. Not only does this innovative approach reduce food waste, but it also ensures that our community facing food insecurity have access to wholesome meals. Since July 2022, our community fridge and ready meal scheme have redistributed 7 tonnes of food waste that would have otherwise gone to landfill. This effort has directly supported over 4,000 people, demonstrating the significant impact of our work in fighting food waste and supporting local people. Our ready-meal project, launched in January 2023, was a game-changer. After seeing the potential of surplus food from our community fridge, we took a leap, thanks to a pilot grant from the Heart of England Community Fund. The result? We sold 2,300 meals to over 9,000 adults and children by November 2023 before temporarily pausing due to a lack of suitable premises.

Consultation with stakeholders

Our extensive research has clearly shown that Urban Goodies CIC addresses the critical needs of individuals who are most at risk of falling through the cracks of traditional government support systems. This includes those living in remote areas, the elderly, individuals with limited mobility and even those employed who mistakenly believe they don’t qualify for assistance or are discouraged by means testing. The success of our project, since December 2023, is a testament to our deep understanding of our members’ unique requirements. While we greatly value the surplus food donated to us, we have also invested significantly in essential items like dairy products and pantry staples, ensuring our members can prepare healthy and nutritious meals that sustain them for 3-5 days each week. Our commitment to continuous consultation with our community is central to our approach. Through our Facebook page, we conduct polls, gather feedback and engage in meaningful dialogue with our members. This ongoing communication has led to significant insights, such as the need for a mobile delivery service to reach families living on the fringes who were previously unaware of the support available to them. We’ve also identified that many of our members experience severe food insecurity during the waiting period for universal credit, which can last 7-10 days between payments. This troubling reality often leaves families without food, fuel, and transportation.

Directors' remuneration

The total amount paid or receivable by directors in respect of qualifying services was £4510.
