Decolonise Fest is an annual London-based, volunteer-run, non-profit DIY arts and culture festival collectively organised by and for people of colour in the punk scene. Our collective is made up of activists, militant community organisers, musicians, and artists that came together to hold our first festival in 2017. Decolonise Fest centres the experiences of people of colour, who we define this as people who are descended (through one or both parents) from the original inhabitants of Africa, Caribbean, Asia, Middle East, Latin America, Australasia, North America, and the islands of the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Ocean, and of Romany Gypsy or Traveller heritage. This year we received funding from PRS Open Fund and used the money to start a series of events in cities outside of London. The first happened in November 2023 in Glasgow at the Mono Cafe where we hosted a show featuring local Scottish artists, Kapil Seshasayee, Ray Aggs, and Trishaaa. We were also were a part of Supersonic Festival in Birmingham in September 2023 where we hosted a rooftop takeover, DJ set, and zine making workshop. These activities this year allowed our organisation to both support our community of artists of colour, while also reaching out to people of colour beyond our normal base of London. This year we have succeeded in expanding our operations across the UK and have continued to support and promote the work and validity of people of colour in the punk scene.
The company’s stakeholders are its attendees, the musicians that play the event, the speakers and members of the public who offer their services at the event, and the local music community. The directors and members of Decolonise C.I.C. have been part of the local music community collectively for over a decade and have based the outlook and values of the festival on our experiences with our local community. We sent out a survey to our attendees who responded and commented on the atmosphere of our event, our selection of bands, and what we could do to improve in the future.
