The Young Blood Youth Theatre focus was to work with children and young people from the Brislington, St. Anne’s and Broomhill area as it falls in the category of the 10% most deprived areas in the UK. We used St Peters church hall for the sessions as it was in equal walking distance to each of these areas and so therefore accessible for all. Overall 46% of the participants came from Broomhill, 30% from Brislington and 24% from St Annes. We had 20 YP attend overall the YB children's theatre group and a total of 12 that attend the older group session. The majority of the participants had not had any drama experience prior to Young Blood so each session was carefully planned to allow the children and young people to learn these new creative skills set in a safe and fun environment, through games, improvisations, and storytelling. Expertly facilitated by Benj Foster our Young Blood Director on this project. Local stories were used within sessions to explore ideas and themes to help create their own devised piece, but both groups wanted to create pieces that showed how they felt about their current change in school and their aspirations. Both groups worked incredibly hard to create two wonderful performances for the local community on Monday 27th March called “Our story, Our Dreams” and “Life through our eyes” to an audience of 50 of local community, family and friends, local counsellors, local organisations who had all come together to celebrate their work. For both pieces the groups wanted to give an insight into what life was like for young people post covid and created two innovative and honest performances that really celebrated young peoples creative voice. Audience member: “ An excellent performance that really gave them a voice!” When reflecting on their experiences within the youth theatre, 100% of the participants said that they had fun, built confidence, made new friends and learnt new drama skills: “ I love drama it’s the best, I made new friends and had so much fun” “Learning about different people and have a show about our story and our dreams” “Getting confidence to perform and overcoming my fears.” Feedback from parents and carers was really positive recognising the importance of this community creative space: “Its really good for the community; they have enjoyed making new friends and finding a love for drama”. As well as recognising the importance of these sessions:“this experience has boosted her Confidence, self esteem and self value.” The project has shown a clear improvement of confidence within the group, the y have come together and made new friends, had fun and developed new creative skills which was a key aim. This project has also increased participation of the arts for this area and has allowed the local community to come together as an audience and celebrate the young people’s creative work. Our aim is to build new and stronger relationships through this project and within the community for the future. Which we have succeeded in doing.
