Be The Change Youth Project CIC is based at the heart of our local community. Everything we do is aimed at improving the wellbeing of local young people and supporting them through to adulthood. We work with young people aged 10- 25 years old in the Great Lever, Rumworth, Hulton and surrounding areas in Bolton, Greater Manchester. Our young people love football and sports, and often this is what attracts them to our sessions. They have responded enthusiastically to football, basketball, boxing, outdoor adventure and cycling activities with our partner Wave Adventure. However, over time we have responded to their demand for lots of other activities, including dance, crafts, cookery and music. The young people who come to us do not attend other mainstream youth provision due to lack of local/community provisions and our partnerships create supported routes for young people to get involved in a much broader range of activities. For the period 1 December 2022 to 30 November 2023 Be The Change has operated the following activities: 1. Our Be Active programmes includes activities such as boxing, football, basketball, running, dance and outdoor adventure. We open up opportunities for young people to try out activities which are new to them, such as rock climbing and mountain biking. 2. We mentor young people at times of transition. This includes support with job training, CV writing, apprenticeships and support with education. 3. Our detached team visits various areas throughout Bolton, engaging with young people on the streets, finding out more about what young people want to do, and what they think is available to them already. We signpost them to opportunities available to them throughout the town. 4. We have delivered knife crime workshops in Bolton schools. We are also working closely with the Bolton Youth Offending Team to refer troubled youngsters to our project. 5. We also offer regular drop-in youth club nights, including regular girls-only provision, with a wider range of activities including informal games and chill out space, arts and creative writing. 6. We offer holiday clubs and provide various activities and food for youngsters on free school meals. 7. We offer high quality football, our boys youth team is very successful and we have launched a girls team. 8. We provide free weekly food provision to young people that attend our youth club.
Be The Change’s programmes are designed by, with, and for young people. We run junior (11-16) and senior (17-25) sessions and regular sport and outdoor adventure activities. All members can suggest new activities and ask for support. We have a young leaders group within the membership. The group is currently made up of eight young people aged 12-18. Having young leaders means the project gains genuine feedback. Young leaders ensure younger members are included and have their voices heard. They are given training and take on a number of responsibilities. They relay young people’s views to the leadership team; they listen to members, gaining feedback to help improve their experience; they attend committee meetings, contributing from their perspective; champion the importance of developing young leaders within the club; and they promote, support and plan activities. Two of our young leaders are also part of the Greater Manchester Youth Combined Authority which advises the Mayor on key issues of concern to young people. We can go further in enabling young people to lead, and our ambitions for this project are to build their skills, involve them more in planning and fundraising, supporting them to develop leadership skills and apply them outside the organisation.
Directors have received expenses and sessional pay for their work.
