COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

KINDLEWOODS CIC

Company Number: 10588271 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 31 January 2024

Company activities and impact

From January 2023, KindleWoods worked in partnership with the White Rose Forest to deliver community woodland creation across North and West Yorkshire, with a particular focus on the Leeds area, working alongside Leeds City Councils woodland creation team and community groups to plant across the city. The winter season of 2023 to 2024 saw further growth in this area with a hugely successful partnership with the forestry team at Kirklees Council, creating 4 new woodlands and planting in the region of 5,300 trees in the Huddersfield area with 340 members of the local community. Volunteers represented a diverse cross-section of the local community, including huddersfield university students, local primary and secondary school groups including SEN schools, a local nursery group, faith based organisation’s including the Muslim Elders and Christian groups, local businesses and members of the public. KindleWoods employed 5 freelance staff in the delivery of the programme including session leaders and session assistants, providing two day outdoor first aid training and session leader training to four members of the team. All staff had training in woodland creation, including detailed training in sapling ID. We increased our kit and equipment to build on planting capacity and spent time reviewing our First Aid needs, creating two waterproof kits for each session - an immediate first aid kit, and larger welfare kit. From Jan 2023, our teams were planting with community groups independently, with capacity to deliver two sessions simultaneously in certain instances. We are hugely proud of the quality of the sessions, the positive level of feedback received and the environmental and community legacy our team helped to create locally. We received 55 responses to our feedback forms, with 97% of respondents giving a 4 and above out of 5 for overall experience. Some quotes from the feedback are below: “The turn out was brilliant. The land is owned by Kirklees Council and the plan was to create a new woodland for our community. We planted native tree species.... English Oak,Silver Birch, Rowan, Alder, Blackthorn and Hazel. etc. Staff from Kindlewoods showed us how to plant, stake and mulch as well as providing all the equipment- like spades, gloves, mulch mats and mallets. We even had a visit from the mayor. Nice to work with groups of other people from different areas.Everyone chatted as they planted the trees.May all the different native trees thrive and prosper.” “Extremely well organised, safe and well attended. All equipment and instruction was excellent. I had planted trees before, but was amazed at how well everyone did and the fact that stocks of all equipment and trees were replenished so quickly when we ran out. Plus coffee and biscuits is always a bonus. I would definitely recommend and volunteer for kindlewood again” “I have been on some other tree planting schemes and KindleWoods had it down to an art, with flags indicating where the trees needed to go and all the kit needed at each flag-station, so we could move between them seamlessly, and plant tons of trees without having to keep going back and forth to a central point to get more trees, stakes, tree guards etc” “The KindleWoods team had done amazingly well in organizing the tree planting” “I really enjoyed the whole experience. I have not done any tree planting before. We were welcomed and shown what to do via a demonstration. Tools etc were explained to us and we got going. It was a very enjoyable, hugely rewarding day. I loved it and would definitely volunteer to plant trees again. I really felt like I was improving the local countryside for the future and helping wildlife by planting trees which will hopefully be there for years to come. My daughter came with me and she also thoroughly enjoyed it too” “Great staff who took the time to explain how the site had been planned with different trees in different areas. Clear instruction how to plant the trees for optimal success and then a cuppa and biscuit at the end of the session.” “Well organised and good communication about the day. Good support during the session . Good opportunity to mix with likeminded people.”

Consultation with stakeholders

KindleWoods asked for feedback from all the volunteers involved in the Kirklees Council Woodland Creation work. We had 55 responses, with 97% of responses giving us 4 or above out of 5 in terms of their overall experience of the session. We used the feedback to help develop the sessions in a way which worked for participants - noticing what people liked about the sessions and what worked particularly well and making adjustments based on the suggestions volunteers made.
