Company activities and impact

BasementArtsProject's mission is to... deal with the removal of barriers to art within the community and is based around four pillars: Art as Entertainment, Education, Engagement & Employment. and provide artists at the beginning of their career with exhibitions, experiences, opportunities, mentoring, and assistance in achieving their visions. Over the last year we have produced four exhibitions and two concerts within the local, South Leeds Community, one with Leeds City College and three exhibitions in which we took artists work out of Leeds to Manchester UK, Athens; Greece and Colchester; UK. We have also run five sculpture workshops with 3 South Leeds Schools, primary and secondary and 2 local community centres. I have created a programme for the next 12 months which will involve a similar number of projects with a local, national and international scope. We will also be moving onto the next phase of our urban renewal project; having created 'The Corner' Pocket Sculpture Park we will be focussing on achieving our idea of turning this deprived corner of South Leeds into a 'Cultural Gateway'. For this we have 4 more public artworks currently being developed by artists from Leeds(2), South Leeds(1) and North Devon(1) which we aim to realise over the next five years. 'The Corner' project has not only decreased the level of anti-social behaviour normally associated with that area of land but has seen an average daily use, through the summer months, of 15-20 people having picnics and letting children play. It has also increased awareness and interest in art due to the presence of 'Jacob's Ladder' at the centre of the park. Jacob's Ladder is our 9ft 7tonne Tadcaster limestone sculpture that we commissioned from Leeds artist Keith Ackerman, and created on site in full public view over the course of a year. Based on this we also spent a year teaching the public the skills associated with direct carving in stone in free workshops on the land. Nearly 80 people from the community took part in this activity. I have recently become part of a steering group for a wider Leeds arts organisation 'Situation Leeds' as a way of networking the cultural events that we are developing in this very specific area, South Leeds, with the wider Leeds art scene.
