The Ethical Data Initiative focuses on promoting responsible practices in data use, particularly in research and innovation. Over the past year, the organisation has conducted workshops and training sessions aimed at equipping researchers and stakeholders with the knowledge to handle data ethically and responsibly. By delivering open educational materials and engaging with stakeholders, the Initiative has fostered an inclusive environment for dialogue around data ethics. This approach has led to the development of resources that support researchers in making informed decisions about data management and sharing, ultimately benefiting the broader community. In May 2023, the Ethical Data Initiative, together with the Association of African Universities and the University of Nottingham launched the Campaign for Data Ethics in Education. The Campaign is accompanied by the Ethical Data Discussion Series, a series of webinars exploring and informing on ethical considerations surrounding digital technologies, data collection, and data-driven research. On 28 November 2022, the Ethical Data Initiative put out an open call for hosting, looking to partner with leading engineering technology and research institutions in order to increase capacity. As of October 2023, we are in the process of finalising a bilateral partnership agreement to begin early 2024.
Though we have informally consulted with various stakeholders, there has been no formal stakeholder consultation held. We are planning to hold the first official stakeholder consultation Q1 2024.
The founding Directors took nominal remuneration as consultants for postgraduate training sessions on Responsible Research and Innovation and Data Ethics, held in February 2022 and February 2023 at the University of Nottingham. The training was part of a joint CDT programme run by Newcastle University and the University of Nottingham. Details are included in the accounts.
