REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES |
FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 JANUARY 2024 |
The trustees who are also directors of the charity for the purposes of the Companies Act 2006, present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31 January 2024. The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019). |
Sport Allies was born out of the Warwick Rowers (WR) campaigning and fundraising calendar project. The WR project initially sought to make sport a more inclusive environment for LGBT men. It later became the Worldwide Roar to include more LGBTQI and BIPOC visibility within the calendar and associated content. |
Sport Allies commissioned an academic review that helped us to recognize the broader impact of heteronormative, patriarchal culture on inclusion in sport - especially through misogyny, structural racism and narrowly defined views of the dominant role that particular versions of masculinity must play in any social or organizational structure. |
This has informed not just our work, but also the work of our funders at Worldwide Roar. As a result, they have now rebranded as Barefoot Man, a multimedia project that combines art and dialogue to promote healthier masculinity and greater equity in life chances. This very much aligns with our values as a charity, and we are now focusing our support on the development of this project. |
Barefoot Man will continue its fundraising efforts for Sport Allies as part of a commitment by men who have been historically privileged in sport and in life to promote greater access to the life chances that have benefitted them. |
Since its inception, the vast majority of the funds received by Sport Allies have been from the WR project, although smaller external donations have also been received and we hope to continue this trend over the next five years. |
OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES |
Objectives and aims |
The stated mission of Sport Allies is to promote sport as an inclusive and supportive route to personal growth for everyone. We have previously established evidence base research through academic review, which led to the publication "Homophobia, Gender and Sporting Culture" (available as a PDF download from our website) and the development of our Strategy for Change (also accessible via our website). We continue to fund work that features on those within the world of sport (individuals, sports clubs and sports-related projects) who, like the original Warwick Rowers and the sportsmen who joined the Worldwide Roar, are making a specific and identifiable contribution to making sport more inclusive. |
ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE |
Charitable activities |
Five years ago, we refined our strategic thinking to focus specifically on the use of film as an educational and awareness-raising tool, with a particular aim of empowering young people. With the support of a leading expert in film in education, and capitalising on the extensive media experience among our trustees, we began a development process with the London Film School that resulted in a unique new film-making partnership between Sport Allies, London Film School and SKY Sports. |
Working closely with faculty staff, graduates and undergraduates at London Film School and with professionals at SKY Sports, we were subsequently able to produce and disseminate a series of three educational films where relevant individuals, clubs and projects within sport share their experiences and perspectives on inclusion. These films have been widely shared, most notably on SKY Sports. They have been very well received and will remain freely available online. |
Now, we are working more closely with our funders at Barefoot Man to develop a multi-media space where everyone (of every gender and sexuality) can become part of developing mindful approaches to inclusion. Specifically, Barefoot Man draws on the historic experience of the participants in the Warwick Rowers/Worldwide Roar project to set out a range of accessible learning tools that enable everyone to explore vulnerability and their relationships with traditional social models of masculinity. |

FINANCIAL REVIEW |
Principal funding sources |
During the World Cup in Qatar, we were fortunate enough to receive a donation of £5000 from the UK comedian and TV presenter, Joe Lycett. As part of our strategy of diversifying funding sources to include more individual donors, we have succeeded in attracting small donor income from donations to enter Seeing Men, a virtual exhibition curated by internationally renowned artist Keith Khan and hosted by Barefoot Man with images from the back catalogue of our fundraising project. |
Our fundraising collaborators at Barefoot Man will support further growth in small donation funding through a second exhibition and through the launch of a text-only publishing imprint, Barefoot Words. In light of Barefoot Man's significant contribution to our fundraising and to meeting our strategic objectives in delivering social outcomes, we have adjusted our accounts this year to release Barefoot Man from an historic funding obligation. This reflects our support for their continued work to develop learning tools for social awareness and better male mental health as well as their fundraising work for the charity. The adjustment has been officially recorded in the accounting of both Sport Allies Ltd and Worldwide Roar (t/a Barefoot Man) Ltd. |
Investment policy and objectives |
Most of the charity's funds are being used to fund existing work so there are no funds currently available for long term investment. |
Reserves policy |
The Management Committee has examined the charity's requirements for reserves in light of the main risks to the organisation. Currently, minimal reserves are needed to meet the working capital requirements of the charity. Longer-term, the strategy is to build reserves through planned operating surpluses to ensure the ongoing sustainability of the charity to enable it to meet and deliver its objectives in times when external economic activity may limit fundraising opportunities. |
FUTURE PLANS |
The charity plans to continue the activities outlined above in the forthcoming years subject to satisfactory funding arrangements. |
STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT |
Governing document |
The organisation is a charitable company limited by guarantee, incorporated on 15th January 2014 and registered as a charity on 28th October 2016. The company was established under a Memorandum of Association which established the objects and powers of the charitable company and is governed under its Articles of Association. In the event of the company being wound up members are required to contribute an amount not exceeding £10. |
Recruitment and appointment of new trustees |
The directors of the company are also charity trustees for the purposes of charity law and under the company's Articles are known as members of the Board of Trustees. Under the requirements of the Memorandum and Articles of Association the members of the Board of Trustees are elected to serve for a period of three years after which they must be re-elected at the next Annual General Meeting. |
All members of the Board of Trustees give their time voluntarily and receive no benefits from the charity. Any expenses reclaimed from the charity are set out in the accounts. |
Business, marketing, PR and television documentary skills are well represented on the Board. To maintain and enhance our existing skill mix, members of the Board will be requested to provide a list of their skills (and update it each year) and in the event of particular skills being lost due to retirements, individuals are approached to offer themselves for election to the Board. The charity is actively searching for additional trustees to broaden the skills of the board, including someone with an accountancy background to fulfil the role of Treasurer. |

REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES |
FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 JANUARY 2024 |
STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT |
Organisational structure |
Sport Allies has a Board of Trustees who meet six monthly (when circumstances permit) and are responsible for the strategic direction and policy of the charity. At present the Board, including the Secretary, has members from a variety of professional backgrounds relevant to the work of the charity. |
Related parties |
Angus Malcolm, a trustee, is also a director and controlling shareholder in Worldwide Roar Ltd which provides a source of donations and administrative support. |
Risk management |
A risk register has been established and is to be updated at least annually. Where appropriate, systems or procedures will be established to mitigate the risks the charity faces. Significant external risks to funding have led to the development of a strategic plan which will allow for the diversification of funding and activities. Internal control risks are minimised by the implementation of procedures for authorisation of all transactions and projects. |
