In 2023, Made Up Collective continued to engage consistently within the Kingsmead Estate, Hackney, through three cornerstone projects: the Kingsmead Community Shop (Social Supermarket), the Over 50’s Social Club, and our newly launched Twice Weekly Resistance Training Sessions for elders. Kingsmead Community Shop: Our community-led social supermarket has become a foundation of support, offering nutritious shopping to over 100 families every Saturday at hugely subsidised rates. This year alone, we distributed approximately 45,000 bags of fresh produce and essential groceries. The affordability and accessibility of the shop supports not only our neighbours but also wider Hackney residents. Youth Leader volunteers from Rise.365 have been instrumental in assisting the elderly and those with mobility challenges, carrying shopping right to their doors. This initiative not only alleviates food insecurity but also fosters community solidarity, with over 8,400 volunteer hours logged this year, half of which were contributed by our dedicated Made Up team. Over 50’s Social Club: Our social club has seen remarkable growth, with attendance now at 45 local elders every Wednesday evening. The club offers a range of activities, including bingo, dominoes, and music, coupled with a communal meal. This initiative plays a crucial role in reducing social isolation and enhancing the mental well-being of our elder community members. Over 50’s Resistance Training Sessions: Introduced this year, these sessions aim to improve physical health by increasing mobility, muscle mass, confidence, and bone density among elders. Held twice weekly, the sessions have quickly reached a community of 34, with each session accommodating up to 18-20. . These sessions complement our broader mission by integrating participants from our other projects, promoting a holistic approach to community health. Additional Community Support: In addition to these projects, we have started providing vital IAG support, esp. Information , Adviced and Guidance, esp around housing and benefits. We’ve also maintained our catering services for the local Church of Sound music events and continued our partnership with Companys Drinks in Barking for the Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) program. New Initiatives and Partnerships: This year marked a significant collaboration with Dominvs Group, envisioning a Community Pub within a new student accommodation development in Stratford. Made Up Collective not only supported a successful planning application but also expanded potential revenue streams to sustain our social value projects. Funding and Organizational Development: Our efforts to secure resources for our initiatives have been met with great success, receiving multiple grants that will ensure the continuation and expansion of our work. Moreover, the elevation of a core team member to a directorial position within Made Up Collective underscores our commitment to nurturing leadership that champions community engagement and empowerment.
Our stakeholdersare East London residents, a majority of whom are from the Global Majority. Our reach has grown wider afield due to word of mouth, but most people are still mainly from the Kingsmead/Clapton Park Hackney area, and the rest of Hackney. The Stakeholders are from diverse backgrounds, with over 70% with Black African and Caribbean heritage. We set up informal 1-1 conversations with people at the Community Shop each week, and Elders who attend our Over 50’s Social asking about other ways we could support them. In response we are pilot Resistance Training Sessions and Trips for our Over 50’s in a bid to counter long term mobility issues that can lead to social isolation.
