The Thelmas WMC develop and produce professional productions, and deliver workshops for minoritised women in order to create opportunities for those who have traditionally been overlooked, or are underrepresented in the arts. During the financial year 2023-2024, the company’s activities have benefited the community in the following ways: Re-developed Santi & Naz for a run at Edinburgh Festival Fringe. A play about two young women living in India during the time of Partition, giving voice to several generation of South Asian Diaspora families, and queer people of all ages. This production encourages underserved audiences to engage with a play that reflects their lived experiences. We offered discounts to relevant community groups in order remove financial barriers so that more people, regardless of background, are able to enjoy world-class culture in Britain. As part of the project we delivered wraparound creative engagement activity to provide opportunities for local communities to generate discussion about the Partition of India and foster connection. Following the production in Edinburgh we began plans to tour the play across the UK in order to make this production available to more audiences nationally and further the impact of the community engagement activity. We successfully applied to Arts Council England’s touring fund, demonstrating the importance and relevance of the production to the artistic landscape, and need for our community engagement activities We took part in Mercury Theatre’s Creative Round Table, established so the venue can check in with how they are doing as an organisation creatively, for the benefit of freelance artists, small organisations and their community members. The result of this round table will directly impact communities in Colchester and surrounding areas. The Thelmas undertook training specific to their roles in order to grow knowledge, build capacity, and develop the organisation to be able to continue to provide quality output - both artistically and our participatory activity. Developed our relationship with SOAS, University of London and began a new project involving MA students with the aim of changing the way we teach & learn history in Britain. Began to develop two new plays. One from a d/Deaf artist about the idea that motherhood is the most rewarding job in the world. Exploring the darker side of parenthood, the play provides an outlet for women to share their stories and opens a conversation into the ultimate societal taboo - maternal ambivalence. We hope that with the future success of this production, we can also raise the profile of d/ Deaf and disabled artists. The second is a play about two working class children trying to survive when their mother goes missing. Although in the much earlier stages of development, our collaboration with Mercury Theatre will allow us to reach communities in Essex who historically are underserved by the arts, and may be facing similar economic hardships as the play’s characters. Applied for national funding to create and deliver participatory activity to benefit women of all ages in the UK, related to performance projects. These projects allow participants to engage in theatre and performance activities, and find ways to connect to each other through their experiences. Advocated for greater equality in the arts & cultural sector, and amplified the messages of charity partners through signposting audiences to different campaigns.
The company’s stakeholders are women and non-binary artists of all ages and experiences. The directors of the company have worked as freelance artists for 15+ years and design company activity in response to the changing landscape of the theatre industry, based on their experience of talking to other artists. They also reflect current social and political issues affecting women globally. During the financial year 2023-2024, we consulted with audiences attending previews of Santi & Naz, requesting feedback on the play, exploring who they felt the play is for, and its relevance to today. Responses to the feedback questions have informed our strategy for further touring of the show, as well as wider company strategy.
The total amount paid or receivable by directors in respect of qualifying services was £4,024. There were no other transactions or arrangements in connection with the remuneration of directors, or compensation for director’s loss of office, which require to be disclosed.
