Sunny Skies continues to deliver various opportunities for adults with learning disabilities. Over the past financial year, we have operated three sites: a cafe, workshop, and outdoor space. The cafe continues to be an excellent environment for those we support to learn valuable work and communication skills. We also support our volunteers to learn money skills, build their confidence in the workplace, and become more independent in a nurturing and inclusive space. Opportunities at the cafe give a voice to those with mental health issues or learning disabilities and a valued physical presence within their community. This enables our volunteers to access the social interaction that they deserve and to feel valued in society for their abilities instead of being noticed for their disabilities. Not only is the cafe valuable for the members of Sunny Skies, but it also benefits the wider community. We hold weekly community events for charities and displaced groups, e.g. on a Wednesday, we run a group called ‘Winner, Winner, Community Dinner’. This is for older people who are living with dementia or isolation. We continue to run our Neighbourhood Mental Health Cafe, funded by the NHS, which provides opportunities for those who require support with their mental health to visit a safe space. We provide group or one-to-one support from support workers trained in mental health first aid. The Neighbourhood Mental Health Cafe session has been running on Fridays, but it has recently ended. We are passionate about supporting people with mental health and looking for other opportunities to support the community. At our workshop we support the members of Sunny Skies Enterprise to sell and promote items at the cafe that have been made by adults with disabilities. The volunteers of Sunny Skies carry out weekly deliveries of flower arrangements for local businesses in Melton Mowbray. On occasions such as Valentines and Mother’s Day we take orders to make flower arrangements. In April we set up a ‘Community Fridge’ project which aims to reduce food waste and support those who are experiencing food poverty or financial trouble. The project has seen many visitors and saved over 5 tonnes of food from going to landfill. The Community Fridge has 20 volunteers to help it run smoothly as it involves food sharing and collection. We have started to develop our outdoor space. This year we received funding from local bodies to make an allotment area, a poly tunnel, a path suitable for wheelchairs, a toilet and a tool shed. We aim to grow our own food and flowers to support self-sustainability for our enterprises.
The members of Sunny Skies have developed valuable work skills, which parents and carers have said have enabled them to become increasingly independent and improve their confidence and self-esteem. By creating an environment where adults with learning disabilities are supported to learn new skills in a dynamic and progressive way, we are making a positive social impact on the community. We create a mental and physical well-being space that enables its members to be viewed as a valued and positive presence within the town. Furthermore, other members of the community in need are invited into these activities, furthering integration and general community well-being. We have responded to all members' requests by supporting them with opportunities of their choice, including singing sessions, making music videos of them in the cafe, and posting on social media. Inviting groups for events and discounted meals for veterans and the vulnerable. Starting a drama session so that they can put on a show at the end of the year. Offering days out. Holding seasonal events, e.g., pumpkin picking and carving.
