Company activities and impact

Windswept CIC (Windswept) is a non-profit watersports centre, that provides affordable centre-based and outreach watersports sessions to communities throughout Pembrokeshire. The primary aim is to enable people of all ages and backgrounds to access the fantastic opportunities of the Pembrokeshire coastline with a focus on providing sessions to the disadvantaged and people with disabilities. Windswept was founded because we felt that there is a real need for a community-based watersports provider that can offer an affordable and inclusive option for local communities to get out on the water and have a positive impact on their physical and mental wellbeing. Alongside this we open up to tourists during the summer season. We offer lessons and hire in paddleboarding, windsurfing and wingfoiling. Any profits from this go back into providing subsidised weekly sessions for the local community. Pembrokeshire has many disadvantaged communities and there needs to be more opportunities for young people to get out on the water and have fun in a safe environment. As we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic there is a profound need for activities that boost people’s physical and mental well-being; however, with the current economic climate, people may now struggle to afford this. At Windswept we try to address these issues. At Windswept, we provide weekly clubs at a subsidised cost to enable local communities to make the most of what’s on offer, right on their doorstep. These clubs include, Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) Club, Weekly Paddle-Ability sessions and a Windsurf Club for both children and adults. We run our weekly Paddle-Ability sessions for people with disabilities. We have been working with Cerebra Innovation Centre who have designed and built us a Paddle-Ability SUP to enable people with disabilities to have better access to the sport. The result has been fantastic and the board is proving to be a real asset in helping people develop and progress their paddling skills. Currently, we are the only provider in South and West Wales offering Paddle-Ability sessions We have installed a hoist on the seasonal pontoon in Dale funded by the National Lottery. The hoist enables wheelchair users to have access to the water. The hoist is also available to use by other businesses once they have received formal training in its use. We also host a beach wheelchair at our centre in Dale. The wheelchair was funded and supplied by the National Park Authority and is free for people to book online and use when they visit Dale beach.
