The company undertook the following activities. Continued to hold monthly FolkActive Dances with live music for older people, with numbers of attendees gradually increasing to beyond pre-pandemic levels. Secured funding to restart our Moving in the Moment workshops for people living with dementia and their carers. Continued to deliver our two ensembles, Southampton Folk Orchestra for adults, and FolkActive Youth Ensemble for young people, with both groups growing and attracting new members. Secured partnership funding from Hampshire Music Service to deliver workshops in folk music and dance at primary schools within Hampshire during 2023-24 academic year. Formed a new partnership with Bishop's Waltham Festival to host an annual ceilidh for local primary school children. Presented one-off dances and workshops for community groups, folk festivals and youth organisations Our FolkActive Dances help keep older people active and maintain social links, reducing isolation. Our Moving in the Moment sessions deliver live music and gentle movement, both of which have been shown to be beneficial for people living with dementia. Our ensembles develop creativity and build musical skills. The quality of our youth ensemble has been recognised by the local schools music hub and by the national folk development organisation, EFDSS. Our schools workshops develop music and dance skills and awareness of local, national and international traditions, as well as providing fun and accessible activities for children. Our one-off events promote awareness of traditions and folk heritage in a fun and accessible way.
We actively seek feedback from all schools, organisations and individuals that we work with, and maintain conversations with our participants. Activities in our ensembles are developed and guided through collaboration with the ensemble participants. We are a partner organisation with the schools music hubs for Southampton, Portsmouth and Hampshire and maintain active links with all three. We attend annual meetings of stakeholder groups such as music hubs, community centres and the local folk association.
