Merseyside Dementia Friendly Radio is an independent, online radio station that is run in collaboration with, and for the benefit of, those who live in the Merseyside area whose lives are affected by dementia. The 24/7 broadcast is carefully curated to serve as a reminiscence resource whilst also providing reality orientation, mood management, self-care reminders and signposting to local services/groups. M.D.F.R. also aims to keep people up-to-date with dementia related news, events and research findings. Every aspect of the station is given utmost consideration to ensure that the content and the ways in which it is experienced are as dementia friendly as possible. Launching in February 2020 the radio station has developed a range of programming which suits the needs of people living with dementia including, a range of music from different eras, time and day prompts, first-hand accounts of the benefits of music from people living with dementia and interest pieces from professionals working in dementia care. Whilst this was not anticipated at the time of launch a radio station proved particularly beneficial during 2021 due to the ongoing social isolation that people felt during lockdown as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Adaptations were made to the way the service ran, and equipment purchased, meaning that people living with dementia could still record content for the station from their own home, therefore not exposing themselves to risk. Merseyside Dementia Friendly Radio has deliberately chosen premises which are also committed to benefitting the local community, moving to the Speke Training and Enterprise Centre in August 2024. The centre works to support the local community and is striving to be more dementia friendly. The benefits to the community include:- Providing people living with dementia, who may otherwise be excluded, with a radio station dedicated to their needs- To keep the community updated on current issues related to dementia and ways to support themselves or others living with the condition- To help people living with dementia feel connected. The station has recently been awarded a Community DAB licence which means it will be more easily accessible to the target audience.
The company stakeholders are people living with dementia, carers and loved ones of people living with dementia, professionals working within dementia services and academia and others interested in dementia. The directors all have an interest and history with dementia. Two directors are children of people living with dementia; two are academics and one an entrepreneur, all working in the area committed to improving the lives of people living with dementia. Stakeholder consultation was more limited this year due to problems with premises, but there was some consultation through email and telephone surveys by volunteers and student placements. This will be built on in the coming year. Links have been made with local care homes and dementia groups to offer them to opportunity to contribute to the content played. Content for the station has been developed by people living with dementia, health professionals and researchers in the area.
