COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

THRIVING COMMUNITIES CIC

Company Number: 13648161 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 29 March 2024

Company activities and impact

The years 2022-2023 have been significant for Thriving Communities CIC. Growth has been spearheaded by Director Melaney Jones, who invested over £10000 of her own money to allow the time to build the organization. She recruited 2 new directors onto the board and into the Thriving Communities executive team. These individuals resulting benefits and contributions have been significant and far-reaching in terms of formalizing a clear structure for the business and putting Thriving Communities on the map, including creating a brand new website, integrated business banking, and greater provision of well-being services. The team additions are a GP and a 500-hour yoga instructor, breathwork and meditation coach plus a Marketing Manager who is also a Holistic Therapist, Meditation Teacher, and Coach. These individuals have shared and contributed their skills, passion, and expertise and helped to foster collaborations with multiple stakeholders (funding partners, healthcare providers, community organizations), such that more services could be offered to support the health and well-being of local constituents either free or at very little charge. The skillset and dedication of the directors collectively have resulted in the organization being recognized at various business awards, including the Business Start-up Awards (social enterprise category) and the Mental Health and Wellbeing Awards. Additionally, it has garnered recognition from Welsh Government departments and attracted grants from the local health board, local authorities, the Welsh Council for Voluntary Action, and The National Lottery. Services provided have been designed around the Positive Psychology PERMA model for creating a fulfilling life. This model embeds Positive Emotions, Relationships, Meaning, Accomplishments, Physical Activity, Sleep, Nutrition and Optimism. It is a robustly evidenced intervention strategy for psychological health and well-being. The company has evolved significantly to encompass 4 strategic pillars for putting this Positive Psychology model into action and for promoting well-being and personal growth. A Happiness and Wellbeing Group with many hundreds of members. The group facilitates approximately 12 events per month, both social and empowering. These include nature events, cinema socials, live artist concerts, workshops, social lunches, trips away (holidays have included a Greek yoga retreat and city breaks) plus weekly online meditation classes. The Mind and Body Wellness Programme, a flagship project led by GP Dr Manmeet Kaur A voluntary evaluation project that ran between April and November 2022 and subsequently, a new 3-year program was rolled out in June 2023 with approximately 5 cohorts per year. This program is currently under evaluation by Swansea University. Each cohort spans 6 weeks: 5 weekly sessions of 90 minutes of yoga, mindfulness, breathwork, and meditation followed by an intensive 3-day Breath to Health (SKY) Workshop (3 hours per day, total 9 hours). Dr Kaur was invited to be a speaker on breathing techniques at the 2023 Mental Health and Wellbeing Show in Cardiff. Wellbeing Workshops for the community, staff, carers, etc on subjects, such as Compassion Fatigue, Minimising Anxiety & Depression, Friendship Friday (fostering positive relationships), Laughter Yoga, Self-Love, Building Self-confidence, Clarifying your Purpose, Positive Psychology for Parents, and more. Thriving Communities have collaborated with mental health groups, such as You’re Never Alone, Men.Talk.Walk (both mental health walking groups for men), Risca CV, and Valley Daffodils (Wellbeing Sessions for Adults with Additional Needs). Spirit of Nature: enabling community members to experience the positive benefits of activities in nature, e.g. Walk ‘n’ Talks (currently 1 weekly Bargoed area Walk and Talkers and 1 weekly Wednesday Happy Wanderers Walk in Caerphilly/Blaenau Gwent areas), Flow in Nature and QiGong, Forest Bathing (Shinrin Yoku), Walking Meditations, Nordic Walking. As a result of the Spirit of Nature project people are enjoying more active lifestyles and enjoying positive friendships since most walks involve a cafe social. Thriving Communities have contributed to the Nature Prescribing Framework for Wales and offered sessions through Public Health Wales. Research tells us that happier people are healthier and together with our Spirit of Nature project we are creating the ripple effect of positive change in the community. Thriving Communities were also invited to support the Everywoman Fest at Insole Court in June 2023 by providing taster sessions for Nordic Walking, Laugher Yoga & QiGong. The company has now created a firm foundation for positive impact in the community and for garnering greater success and growth in the years to come.

Consultation with stakeholders

Consultation is a continuing theme for Thriving Communities CIC with views and opinions asked and acted upon. The Mind and Body Wellness Programme features a pre- and post-evaluation form, including a CORE-10 questionnaire, to assess the health benefits and psychological impact of these interventions. Qualitative evidence is also captured through video testimonials. Feedback forms and surveys are designed and utilised to assess the effectiveness of any workshops delivered and to ascertain where there could be more scope to meet the demands and needs of participants. The organisation does its utmost to accommodate fresh demand and new ideas and is very proactive in seeking ways to fund or self-generate funds to deliver project consistency and extend offers to meet new requests.

Directors' remuneration

As mentioned previously, the directors are also the active consultants of this organisation and were responsible for creating income streams and together with others, worked and delivered programmes and sessions as facilitators and were reimbursed for their time. The community was the ultimate benefactor as it means that they could enjoy services which they have requested, for example, workshops to reduce stress and anxiety, the Menopause Wellbeing in Action Workshops, regular meetings with guest speakers and concerts, etc.
