COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

HARE FOREST SCHOOL CIC

Company Number: 14675291 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 28 February 2024

Company activities and impact

The company HARE Forest School carries out activities which benefit families, children and adults who live in the local community through improvement of their wellbeing. We achieve this through creating safe, nurturing spaces for families and communities. We offer sessions to learn heritage crafts, nature connection, practical skills in Forest School and edible gardens. We incorporated in February 2023 and since then we have offered sessions to benefit: Parents and toddlers, enabling them to meet like minded families and reduce feelings of isolation, anxiety and depression. Neuro-diverse children who cannot access mainstream education. We have provided opportunities for them to be at the centre of child-led learning, and mentored them to gain practical skills through Forest School. Holiday Activities and Food program offering children from low-income families enriching activities, healthy meals and child-care places in the school holidays. Networking opportunities for local Forest School leaders. HARE Forest School has provided part-time employment to 7 local residents. HARE Forest School has provided volunteering opportunities for 8 local residents.

Consultation with stakeholders

The company’s stakeholders are families, children and adults who reside in the Forest of Dean area. Two of the three Directors have lived and worked with the local community for many years and developed HARE’s business model based on talking to residents and co-creating activities based on the identified needs of the local community. Prior to setting up each program and during each session we gather information on what families identify as needs so we can create programs to meet those needs. We actively listen to parents and children, to plan and deliver future sessions according to what they want to be delivered. For example, parents expressed a need to be able to meet other families with toddlers and be able to expose their children to nature in a safe and meaningful way. This was seen as incredibly important to them for both their own, and their toddlers health and well being. Our Parent and Toddler, and Nurture in Nature Walks provide opportunities for families to interact and develop bonds during these sessions. Our sessions for neurodiverse children provided a highly valued safe space for children to learn practical skills in the woodland at their own pace, with high ratios of adults to children. This also provides a much needed break for parents who don’t often get the opportunity to have time for themselves, whilst knowing that their child is safe. We ask for feedback after each program and use monitoring forms to ensure we are meeting HARE’s objectives as a business.
