The trustees who are also directors of the charity for the purposes of the Companies Act 2006, present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31 March 2024. The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019). |
Report of the Trustees for the Year Ended 31 March 2024 |
2023 saw Lochaber Women's Aid (LWA) mark its 20-year anniversary of service delivery in the Lochaber area. Staff, board and the local community came together to promote the work we do by organising a wild swim, co-hosting the local park run, running an awareness stall at the local Agricultural Show and inviting local businesses to come together for a lunch. We were fortunate to have Marsha Scott, CEO of Scottish Women's Aid and Highland Violence Against Women at the event and we took the opportunity to educate local businesses about the complexities of domestic abuse and provide an understanding of how they can support women in their organisations who experience domestic abuse to continue working through a traumatic stage in their lives. |
Our organisation has grown in strength and numbers over these 20 years thanks to the commitment and dedication of the staff team who continue to support women, children and young people who have experienced domestic abuse. |
Achievements and performance |
Women's Service |
Lochaber Women's Aid provides practical and emotional support for women who have or are experiencing domestic abuse. Our premises at Mary Street, Fort William provides a discreet and appropriate location for service users to meet for their appointments. Core support is provided by our team of 4 specialist domestic abuse workers who provide high-quality, person-centred support. During the reporting period we supported 158 women of which 125 were new referrals. We delivered 961 support sessions (2087 hours) which were delivered either in person, by telephone or text and occasionally by video calls. Support takes place at in one of our meeting rooms, at the home of service users or at safe spaces in the wider community. |
As part of our ongoing work in supporting survivors of domestic abuse we understand the complexities of domestic abuse and coercive control, we also provided support over a range of topics including emotional, financial, physical, sexual, online abuse, stalking and harassment. We helped survivors access counselling, made referrals to the Safe at Home Scheme to enhance home security, issued a number of ring door bells and explored options for safe housing with the aim of securing tenancies in their own name. |
Our team work with service users to create individual support plans which have goals and actions which will empower them to make independent decisions to improve their current situations and enabling them to work through initial crisis interventions to building recovery and resilience. |
Children's Support Service |
Our team of three Children and Young People (CYP) support worker we supported 56 service users; 36 girls and 20 boys, with 42 being new referrals. The majority of our service users were between the age of 6 and 15. |
We delivered 426, 1-2-1 appointments which equates to 744 hours of support. Over the years we have developed and strengthened links with the teaching staff in local schools and this enables the majority of support to take place in during the school day. |
Lochaber Women's Aid (Registered number: SC330605) |
Report of the Trustees |
for the Year Ended 31 March 2024 |
In addition to understanding domestic abuse, individual support plan sessions focused on the following areas of support: building confidence, coping with feels of isolation, managing challenging behaviour and addressing anxiety. The CYP we support have to cope with difficult experiences and situations including abuse they may have been subjected to or witnessed in their family home. Our service provides practical and emotional support to help improve their overall wellbeing. |
Group Work |
We have delivered twenty group sessions: six for women, two for CYP and twelve family friendly sessions. Our women service users went outdoor swimming with a local experienced facilitator; attendees described it as "a brilliant day which I really enjoyed". They also participated in an introduction to fitness session at a local gym which for some was a big step to take. One service user was very anxious before going to the session and nearly did not go but she pushed herself to attend and said "it felt great to push myself more and was I am happy I did as I loved it. |
We also facilitated an Own My Life session which helps survivors understand more about their past relationships and a creative writing workshop facilitated by a local museum. One service user said "I have started writing more and putting my feelings on paper helps". |
Families participated in other activities such as a climbing session at an indoor climbing and bouldering wall, a taster session to learn how to play badminton, various arts and crafts groups, a summer trip to a safari park, planting flowers, making bird feeders and a Halloween and Christmas party. |
Our group activities enable service users from different parts of our local community to come together for fun and therapeutic opportunities which build confidence, strengthen relationships and provide time to enjoy and relax together in a safe and supportive environment. |
Awareness Raising and Promotional Activity |
LWA continued to be part of local high schools personal, social and emotional development programme by delivering awareness workshops during the school terms. In 2023/24 we had contact with 733 pupils in 3 different schools. These workshops aimed to raise awareness about the support Lochaber Women's Aid offers to women and children and young people. The sessions were tailored to focus on building healthy relationships, understanding domestic abuse, and recognising coercive control. Feedback from students showed they found the sessions both informative and engaging. |
Social media continues to be an effective medium to engage with the wider community. Our total social media reach over the year was 15.7 thousand, which is a 3.5% increase compared to the previous year. |
To celebrate and raise awareness of International Women's Day we left packages of books for women and children around the local community. We posted photos daily of where we left them and received some lovely responses from those that found them. |
Staffing |
Staff wellbeing and development remained high on the agenda of LWA. Training was once again mainly on-line which while effective in giving the staff team ample opportunities does not meet the benefits in person training has for networking and getting to know other colleagues in the wider Women' Aid network. Training included Child and Adult Protection, Mental Health, ACES, Gendered Based Violence, Victim Blaming, Court Processes, Finance, Trauma. Call Handling, MARAC, Economic & Financial Abuse, History of Women's Aid, Suicide Awareness, Stalking, Women and Leadership and Social Media, |
The Future |
Lochaber Women's Aid (Registered number: SC330605) |
Report of the Trustees |
for the Year Ended 31 March 2024 |
Funding has always been a challenge within the sector due to short term funding and the lack of annual uplifts for staff wages; this makes it incredibly difficult to retain and recruit staff. The Scottish Government Strategic Review on Funding and Commissioning Violence Against Women and Girls was published on 6th June 2023 and made several recommendations to improve this situation. Our current funding will end in March 2025, and we are also undergoing a funding review from our local authority, Highland Council, which has been very slow in development. LWA will continue to put the wellbeing of staff, our service users and service delivery at the centre of our governance and strategy moving forward. |
Financial Review |
As at 31st March 2024 the balance sheet reserves totalled £284,057. Of this figure restricted reserves amounted to £26,418 and unrestricted reserves were £257,639. |
Reserves Policy |
The organisation operates two types of reserves: Restricted and Unrestricted reserves. Restricted funds are funds that must be used for a specific purpose. |
The Directors have examined the requirements for reserves in light of the main risks to the organisation. It has established a policy whereby the unrestricted funds not committed or invested in tangible assets held by the organisation should be between three to six months of recurring operating costs, dependant on a risk-based assessment in each financial year. For the coming financial year, our risk-based assessment has defined a period of six months recurring operating costs of and takes into account actual funding and budgets in place at the beginning of the financial year. |
Budgeted expenditure for 2024/25 is £300,000 and therefore the target is £150,000. The reserves are needed to meet the working capital requirements of the organisation, and the Directors are confident that at this level they would be able to continue the current activities of the charity in the event of a significant drop in funding, ensuring that contractual obligations are met and allow time to restructure in such an event. |
While the total unrestricted reserves stand at £257,639 it has been considered prudent to set aside for £10,000 for maintenance of our leased property, and £25,000 for the purchase of IT equipment, both anticipated to be required within the next 5 years. A further £7,500 has been designated as a rent break clause provision which would cover the early termination of our lease, with £25,151 designated as redundancy provision to cover potential costs in the event of a significant drop in funding, all of which would fall outside the scope of our normal funding providers. |
Our General Fund Reserves of £189,988 currently exceed the target of £150,000. However, the directors consider this prudent given the general increase in costs and uncertainty over future funding streams, as both current funding streams still under review. We will continue to monitor the position throughout 2024/25. |

Independent Examiner's Report to the Trustees of |
Lochaber Women's Aid |
I report on the accounts for the year ended 31 March 2024 set out on pages six to seventeen. |
Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner |
The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the terms of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended). The charity's trustees consider that the audit requirement of Regulation 10(1)(a) to (c) of the Accounts Regulations does not apply. It is my responsibility to examine the accounts as required under Section 44(1)(c) of the Act and to state whether particular matters have come to my attention. |
Basis of the independent examiner's report |
My examination was carried out in accordance with Regulation 11 of the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts. |
Independent examiner's statement |
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention : |
(1) | which gives me reasonable cause to believe that, in any material respect, the requirements |
- | to keep accounting records in accordance with Section 44(1)(a) of the 2005 Act and Regulation 4 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations; and |
- | to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and to comply with Regulation 8 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations |
have not been met; or |
(2) | to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached. |
