Company activities and impact

PART 1 – GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE COMPANY’S ACTIVITIES AND IMPACT In the space provided below, please insert a general account of the company’s activities in the financial year to which the report relates, including a description of how they have benefited the community. Equal Brewkery is a Community Interest Company which offers training and routes to employment for adults with learning disabilities. It is staffed entirely by volunteers by a small team of unpaid volunteers. The organisations participants baked bread with a number of customers from their base at a day-care centre, Independence Matters in Norwich. They also brewed beer regularly and sold the bottled beer to local supermarkets (East of England Cooperative) in Norfolk and Suffolk. The developed a Gateway Learning programme which focused on food hygiene, baking and kitchen skills and team working and the promotion of positive behaviour. This programme of learning was enhanced from skills acquired by Bill Russell (Founder) attending a week’s course at the School of Artisan Food, Welbeck. The Brewkery continued it work until May 2023 when it was suddenly closed. A large sink hole appeared on the site of the day care centre and engineers decided that the whole site was too dangerous. The day-care centre, was closed and although re-sited there was insufficient space for Equal Brewkery and therefore it was temporarily closed. The organisers of the Brewkery had to remove all their equipment from the building and place it in storage whilst searching for another site. A local health food shop initially offered a space to bake but then decided against it. In February 2023 the mangers of Flint Barn Whitlingham Country Park, Trowse Norwich offered a place where the Brewkery could be sited. It is in a old shipping container adjacent to Flint Barn. It is hoped through partnership with Aviva and Compass to ‘Crowd Fund’ and raise sufficient funds to convert the shipping container. The estimated cost would be £25,000 - £30,000 so this would be an extremely ambitious target. (If applicable, please just state “A social audit report covering these points is attached”).

Consultation with stakeholders

All stakeholders, volunteers, participants, and carers have expressed in meetings their desire to not only keep the Brewery functioning but raise funds so the container can be converted into a well equipped and functioning teaching place.

No remuneration was received
