Whippet Up uses art and creativity to help boost wellbeing and tackle social isolation. Tees wide weekly cultural workshops are attended by people referred in from mental health support, NHS services, social workers, dementia support, carers etc. Every Whippet Up cultural session feeds into a wider art, cultural, heritage, and community events programme that is designed and developed by the people we support. The arts workshops improve wellbeing, supporting people to get involved in wider community/cultural events helps tackle social isolation and loneliness. Co-produced cultural/community events have included work at festivals and processions, family art days, an alternative energy festival, celebratory lunches, music performances and children’s events. This year has seen us continue to run weekly creativity and wellbeing sessions in Redcar, Boosbeck, Saltburn, Guisborough and Middlesbrough. These sessions have created pieces that have appeared at all the main arts festivals across the Tees Valley. During this year we have secured a contract to become an approved provider for Adult Social Care for Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council (RCBC). As a result we have started to provide services for some RCBC residents as part of their social care planning. The common bond between the people we support is they are socially isolated due to living with mental health, dementia, poor wellbeing, long-term conditions, or their role as a carer. We have seen increased referrals into our services. During 2023/24 these rereferrals have mainly been made by Social Prescribing Link Workers, establishing a strong referral from Primary Care into our community-based services. We continue to support a significant number of people with higher support needs, this includes: Those with high levels of anxiety and Mental Health issues; including people who have recently accessed secondary residential and crisis services. Those living with dementia. People with learning disabilities. People who are recently bereaved. People with brain injuries. People who are isolated. While responding to additional support needs is a challenge, we welcome these referrals and view this as the Social Prescribing team, and the wider referral network, validating what we do and why we do it. They are recognising we are not a leisure/community group, but an organisation that understands Creative Health that is delivering a project that provides a ‘soft landing’ for people with significant support needs. The link between social isolation and common mental health conditions (depression, anxiety etc) is well documented. Our sessions provide a regular group activity and a focus point in the lives of people who are isolated. We gather evidence to support the impact we have on social isolation through discussion to identify the lack of social networks and through information from the Social Prescribing Link Workers, therapists/Occupational Therapy Staff making the referrals. During the year we worked with post graduate psychology students from Teesside University who looked at the alignment of our work within the measurement frameworks for depression and social isolation. This work has helped to reinforce our evidence base when describing the positive outcomes.
The aim of our service is to improve wellbeing and help to tackle social isolation. This year we worked with post graduate psychology students from Teesside University who considered the alignment of our work within common measurement frameworks for depression and social isolation. This work has helped to reinforce our evidence base when describing the positive outcomes. We held a stakeholder evaluation event in February 2024. This was attended by over 200 people involved in our work. Attendance included people we support at our sessions, people from our referral network, people who book our work at festivals and events, funders, and local elected members/officers. We had two giant feedback sheets at this event, below is feedback from these (we have not included the one-word fun, great, fantastic etc responses): What do you think about the work of Whippet Up? It has been absolutely fantastic; I have smiled from the start to the finish. I loved helping to create this! I think everything is brilliant, I was able to drop in when I could. Beautifully crafted. I loved being part of it, very emotive. It’s been absolutely brilliant, such enthusiasm. I love seeing the things we have made in the shows, it makes me feel so proud. I love being part of the crazy Whippet family! I feel pride and love all we have done. My 3-year-old son was captivated, laughing, dancing, and beaming with joy. Amazing, creative, and inclusive. Full of enthusiasm; Brilliant! It has been lovely to see people come together and join in activities and be creative after Covid. You have brought the community spirit back! Gorgeous, Gorgeous, Gorgeous. As are you all. I loved the mix of shows and parades, so creative. Residents of Park House Care Home loved it all! I love the confidence I have built being part of a happy, friendly group. Love you Whippets. Absolutely awesome! Fun, fabulous, and great songs! I liked working with Whippet Up and seeing how ideas evolve. I loved bringing local folklore to a wider audience. Blooming fabulous. Keep up with the creative craziness. I found my tribe. The confidence I’ve gained as a volunteer is brilliant. Absolutely amazing, keep doing what you do! It has all been blooming marvellous. Loved it, keep going, its fabulous.
