In our third year, Design Nature has primarily been involved heavily in designing, developing and delivering a local STEAM project for schools on Air Quality. Alongside this, we have continued to support other local entrepreneurship in education, careers and climate initiatives, projects and groups. HEADLINES Engaged directly in running 21 project activities, primarily with local state primary schools. Others included, Secondary and Private schools and University. Collaborating with over 30 organisations, integrating design approaches into projects, resource and activity design. Worked with over 3420 young people directly in creative sustainability approaches and design skills, through assemblies, workshops, careers evenings and entrepreneurship classes. Continued to increase access and engagement in our offerings to state schools for free, increasing involvement from 154 students in our first year, 1260 in our second and now 3124 this year. This means that many more young people can experience, connect and when taking part in the more practical workshops, share their ideas and contribute to sustainability. Hosted a paid internship from Reading University. Appointed a final year graduate primary school teacher part of the Design Nature team, working on hands on delivery of the CALM programme alongside design and development of proposal, content and communications. This enabled a future primary school teacher to immerse in sustainable design and thinking, while fostering further curriculum links and approach in her practice and developing wider skills in design, communication and stakeholder engagement. Recognised for our work and Awarded the Big Issues ChangeMakers Award 2024 in their Climate, Environment and Nature Category, celebrating those making a difference in the ongoing climate crisis. Our nominator wrote: “Design Nature’s work is highly relevant in modern-day Britain, where the pressing climate and biodiversity crisis calls for innovative solutions. In a world where young people face the impacts of the climate crisis, the organisation’s focus on empowering them to design positive futures aligns with the demands of sustainable business practice, making their work crucial for the challenges of contemporary Britain.” Our third Director, Karen, has been integrating STEAM and sustainability throughout the school’s curriculum and approach where she works. Mapping and creating a pathway to Net Zero. They also achieved the Eco Schools Green Flag Award with distinction for the second consecutive year and were awarded Highly Commended by the ISA (Independent Schools Award) for Excellence in Sustainability 2024. Alongside this, she has supported the development of educational material for Key Stage 3 (Secondary Curriculum) for Offshore Wind Learning, in support of recruitment into this workspace and enabling pupils to consider renewable energy and green careers as part of their futures. Karen has also spoken at several educational and industry events on 'Creating sustainable schools' and has worked alongside a range of local sustainable partners (TOAST, Textile Collective) to enhance learning for pupils (aged 10-16) developing a climate and global perspective curriculum. Design Nature is also involved in the deliberative group for the further development of the local Climate Emergency strategy for Reading and advocating for young people and school’s views and perspectives to be considered throughout. Case study of our activities and impact CALM: Exploring Reading Over the last year Design Nature CIC have been collaborating on the Clean Air Living Matters Exploring Reading Programme (CALM). It’s overseen by Reading Borough Council, working with Stantec, the University of Reading and ourselves. Funded by Defra it will be running until the end of March 2025 with the main objectives to: Increase knowledge around air quality, its causes, impacts and solutions, with pupils and staff in schools Increase awareness of air quality in the wider community and surrounding schools Encourage behavioural change in activities that impact on poor air quality, surrounding schools, by enabling pupils, parents and the wider community to take action Link with other Reading Borough Council initiatives and school engagement, such as Transport and Travel and wider climate strategy Design Nature’s role has been to both design and create the resources, assemblies and workshop activities (alongside our brilliant graphic design collaboration) and to deliver these in schools. “We have had a wonderful visit from Design Nature and Stantec yesterday afternoon. We have launched an investigation into air quality around our environment – stay tuned for further updates as our Eco Warriors continue to monitor!” (Civitas Academy on X) In the 2023 to 2024 year for Design Nature, we delivered numerous assemblies and workshops, alongside providing take home activity sheets on Air Quality. This has enabled more than 15 schools and over 3000 pupils to take part in design, sustainability-related STEAM, Air Quality sessions.
We have continued to involve our stakeholders in workshop design and delivery, primarily working with teachers and their knowledge of the school and students. We hope to continue to increase our engagement and feedback with young people and local schools in particular, as we further develop our ReDesigners Programme.
