Bodies in Action, enGendering Contemporary Dance a company based in East London (Tower Hamlets) that aims to stand and encourage every individual to live in their authentic skin without succumbing to the societal pressures of conformity. We aim to close the gap of conventional gender roles in contemporary dance by welcoming and involving individuals who lie on the gender spectrum on a recreational and professional level through classes/ workshops, outreach programs, and performance. We believe it is vital to reduce the stigma of people who identify differently than the majority by incorporating and bringing them to the forefront of the community through forms of activism and exposure. We believe that contemporary dance/exercise is a form of physical and mental therapy and we aim to be the leading cause of change in the industry by engaging this audience through different opportunities on both a recreational and professional level. Our main mission is to introduce and include individuals on the gender spectrum (specifically queer, intersex, transgender, and non-binary) to contemporary dance (recreationally & professionally) and get them more involved in the contemporary dance community. Becoming an integral part of our cause can help change the way the contemporary dance industry is perceived by ultimately everyone. With your generous donation we can: Challenge Social perspectives on Gender and identity through our work with Professional Artists and the wider community. Create exciting Jobs & Opportunities in the Arts, promoting and practicing inclusivity in all our work. Create groundbreaking new work whilst nurturing professional development Seek out collaborations with individuals who lie on the gender spectrum and provide a platform for these voices to be heard. Highlight the power of dance and movement in everyday life and its contribution to physical and mental health. Generate a grassroots platform to inspire social change through our interactions with young people & communities. Recently, Bodies in Action, enGendering Contemporary Dance has been creating work that challenges contemporary dance and we hope to continue to do so.
Our companies stakeholders range from dance professionals within the London Community and all over the UK. Other stakeholders are the general public that have an appreciation for dance as well as LGBTQIA+ activism for equality. We have not had any consultations as we are still in the process of building our brand awareness through marketing schemes. As a company in the performing arts, there are very little funding opportunities and this is especially competitive within London and the dance community.
