Balance sheet statements

For the year ending 28 February 2024 the company was entitled to exemption under section 477 of the Companies Act 2006 relating to small companies.

The members have not required the company to obtain an audit in accordance with section 476 of the Companies Act 2006.

Company activities and impact

Global Teacher CIC is a Community Interest Company committed to making digital education accessible anywhere, offline and off-grid. Our mission is to give one million marginalised students access to education by 2030. Our solution to the shortage of resources in developing nations is twofold; 1.The provision of offline learning software and off-grid learning hardware. 2.Enabling remote schools, crisis zones and areas affected by natural disasters to access the best quality digital education even when there is no internet or electricity. Below are the most significant achievements towards our mission, achieved in the 2023/2024 fiscal year; 1.In this fiscal year, it was our priority to finish the offline/offline grid learning system so that we could deploy units for international trials. To do this, we required further development of the solar-powered projector’s (POD’s) remote control and also needed to integrate our software (Lumi) into POD’s hardware. Therefore, we engaged a software developer and electronics engineer to complete this work. This was funded by a grant from the Northeast Business Innovation Centre (BIC). 2.In July, our main fundraising vehicle, and sister charitable organisation Global Teacher CIO, launched the sponsorship model that was developed last year. Conversations with Learning Curve Group, starting in Malaysia and ongoing in the UK, resulted in a sponsorship of a unit of POD for a total of £3,000. We received a second sponsored POD unit from the Rotary Club of Darlington in Dec 2023 also for £3,000. 3.Our previous year’s commitment to The Breteau Foundation (MOU) to send units to Mexico, Lebanon and Ukraine was affected by The Breteau Foundation closing its operations in Latin America and the Middle East. However, there were still members of the Breteau Foundation operating in Ukraine and as such, Global Teacher focused our energy on sending POD to Kyiv where schools close to the warzone were still in need of support so we doubled down on our efforts to speed up the production of POD. 4.At this time we also identified that POD would have to meet legal safety certification standards which would incur considerable more time, effort and cost. 5.In July, despite many attempts to engage, the electronics engineer that we had contracted to do the work did not complete his commitment to update the remotes and integrate the software. We were unable to get completed units delivered as promised. As such, Global Teacher consulted with 2 different engineering organisations to figure out options available to us that would enable us to fulfill our obligations. 6.With the combination of these events, we identified an off the shelf system that could be purchased, assembled and shipped that already met safety standards, and delivered the same offline, off-grid digital education outcome. This would fulfill the functionality of POD, reduce manufacturing costs and satisfy import regulations and EU safety certifications. This also enabled Global Teacher to complete the MOU commitment to the Breteau foundation to deploy units to the field by the end of 2023. 7.In November 2023, our Non-Executive Director (NED) Mark Francis resigned due to a change in personal and professional circumstances which left him unable to carry out the role of NED at Global Teacher CIC. On 23rd November, Mark submitted his letter of resignation and was duly removed from Companies House as a Director. It was an absolute pleasure to work with Mark, his time and advice was an invaluable service to Global Teacher and its mission. We wish him the very best of luck in the future both personally and professionally. 8.In December 2023, we sent the first Global Teacher Kit (our offline off-grid learning system) to a special school close to the warzone in Mykolaiv, in partnership with The Breteau Foundation. This was a huge milestone for Global Teacher after so much hard work put into product development. Sending the first unit overseas to support off-grid schools in Ukraine was an incredible feat and achievement. More details as to the impact of this deployment below. 9.To further learn and develop himself and the organisation, our Founder Chris applied for the Royal Academy of Engineering’s ‘Regional Talent Engines’ programme and was successfully admitted to a 6 month accelerator with mentorship, coaching and lectures. He also received a founder’s grant of £20,000 to pay for living expenses whilst building Global Teacher. 10.Our sister organisation Global Teacher CIO, becoming the main fundraising vehicle for Global Teacher’s cause, received a further £10,498 in donations from Tony Trapp, our largest donor, to help overcome some of our product development challenges. Feedback from Special School 3 Mykolaiv Extremely easy to set up Hardware felt very reliable Easy to navigate and use Compact and portable Students benefited from the educational content Students were very engaged with the kit 2.For Ukraine deployments our content partner is The Breteau Foundation. They developed content available in Ukrainian which we then preloaded onto the kits we sent them. The content includes KS1 and KS2 Literacy, Numeracy and Psychosocial Support (PSS) programmes for each key stage. We can add any content, ideally in PDF or MP4 format. Further resources can also easily be added whilst in Ukraine via the provided USB drive. 3.We developed a simple instruction manual in Ukrainian; however, we plan to update this as the kit has undergone some upgrades since this iteration and we will need to update the manual to reflect the system improvements. We can also do training over video call - in the past a 'train the trainer' model has worked well 4.We captured feedback from the field teams using an online survey which can be filled in by the teachers/users of the system. This helps us improve the system overall and understand what is working and what needs improving. We also received photos of the kit in action as well as written/video feedback from the users. This helps us broadcast the positive impact to our supporters and sponsors so that we can support more Ukrainian children, teachers and schools. 5.The above feedback also outlined some opportunities for improvement within the off-grid learning system. For example, the volume can be improved, the brightness of the projector can be increased and the processing power of the CPU chip in the system can be upgraded to allow for a smoother software experience. We intend to implement these changes on future deployments.

Consultation with stakeholders

Throughout the year Global Teacher CIC has continued to maintain strong links with stakeholders via various means. From an internal point of view, we have transferred from Slack to Whatsapp to enable communications between the board, this has helped develop our team relationship and speed/ease of communication. However, for official and professional matters we still opt for email communications to approve documents, feedback on campaigns or follow-up actions from board meetings. We choose to keep external stakeholders informed via email for the purposes of monthly reporting on progress and impact, raising funds and sharing progress in addition to forming partnerships. This will be especially important moving forward to share news about unit 001 and future deployments. Our marketing via social media channels is done to keep our audience updated and informed on our progress to date. We strongly focus on Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn to speak with donors, beneficiaries and partners from all over the world. This helps us better engage our stakeholders and build our reputation in the third sector. Particularly this year, delivering on our commitments to international partners has been pivotal to reach the milestone of deploying the first Global Teacher classroom kit. Our partner links with The Breteau Foundation have been key to accessing user feedback, images and testimonials from the first active school in Mykolaiv, Ukraine.
