COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

BIOREGIONAL LEARNING CENTRE CIC

Company Number: 10598430 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 28 February 2024

Company activities and impact

The focus this year was on two projects, one to restore the saltmarshes on the River Dart and connect the community to them, and the other to understand the readiness of South Devon communities for climate change. BLC was invited by the Environment Agency to convene a team of local ecologists, wildlife experts and our harbour authority to lead an Environment Agency funded project to restore the saltmarshes on the River Dart. Our role in Living Dart: the Saltmarsh Project was to bring community groups into the project and to grow climate literacy around the importance of saltmarshes in our estuary. In preparation for a series of public events, both in person and online, that took place in March 2023, we led outreach on the project and made a short film that can be seen on our website. We also took a number of people out on the river to view the saltmarshes, with a boat supplied by Dartmouth Harbour Authority. BLC was also invited by South Hams District Council to propose a project that would move our region into climate resilience. We submitted a project to run a learning journey around our region in early June 2024 that would be for community groups and councillors, to make a film and produce a discussion paper. Funding for this was agreed in November 2023 and we were able to hire a local project manager for this in February. With funding from NoVo Foundation BLC was enabled to take time to become more strategic, plan ahead, and consider the resources needed for regional resilience to climate change. This research and design phase paved the way for our current work on bringing into being a funding ecosystem for South Devon, a community research network, citizen participation in local decision-making and new projects in regenerative farming, biodiversity gain etc.

Consultation with stakeholders

All our project work is done through consultation and co-design with stakeholders. Stakeholders vary from project to project but are usually the local people who live in the place where we are working. For Living Dart: the Saltmarsh Project we are working with communities around the estuary as well as landowners and exploring community science and communities taking responsibility for monitoring the biodiversity of their local saltmarsh. The two in-person events that we ran, and the one online one, were free to the local community to attend. For the Climate Adaptation work the learning journey that we organised was open to all local community climate groups to participate in.
