COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

FOOD IN COMMUNITY CIC

Company Number: 08492527 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 30 April 2024

Company activities and impact

Objective: Making available fresh fruit and vegetables that would otherwise go to waste to low income and vulnerable groups and organisations. Activity: Knowledge transfer to drive more widespread adoption of measures that make communities more resilient Sharing experience of being a food hub, using food that is regeneratively and fairly produced as a tool to create social value and reduce waste. More than 1.25 million portions of nutritious, sustainably produced surplus food delivered back to the community, averting the environmental impacts of food waste. Food banks, youth cooking groups, not for profit nurseries, charities serving specific vulnerable communities in Devon, community larders, and organisations offering meals and activities to disadvantaged people on a not-for-profit basis received free fresh food. Food in Community food share groups used edible produce too short-dated for other outlets. Supporting and extending organic and local food growing: Vegetables were grown on a 4-acre field for vulnerable households, in collaboration with a farmer. Organic farms and ethical food producers were supported by purchasing food to supplement the surplus food and extend the services we deliver. Tackling food insecurity: Working in partnership with statutory services and charities, households in crisis were supported with 7500 food deliveries, shopping vouchers, advice and support in South Hams and Teignbridge. Social eating events welcomed more people experiencing disadvantage as the effects of the cost-of-living crisis intensified.

Consultation with stakeholders

Food in Community continued working in partnership with councils, schools, NHS, money advice charities, to identify and address community support needs, whilst promoting longer term stability for food and wellbeing. We engaged with organisations individually and as members of Caring Town Totnes. Food in Community’s stakeholders include our individual and organizational customers, suppliers, volunteers and partners, and the wider community of Devon citizens. We consulted via surveys, verbally and at face to face and online gatherings. A number of talented individuals were welcomed as volunteers, including service users and from minority and disadvantaged circumstances, assisting with produce sorting, distribution, catering and back-office help. Volunteers are encouraged to feedback at any point and we continue to hold volunteer specific gatherings, where suggestions are considered and put into action.
