Achievements and Performance
Until receiving a large grant in the last weeks of the financial year, the charity had less than £5000 of income (and so was not required to register as a charity). A huge volunteer effort oversaw the change management needed to put the new charity on a sustainable footing, including securing funding and seeing to the transfer of project assets out of Penny Appeal. We began direct beneficiary engagement in April 2022. Our target beneficiaries are: - anyone with an active interest in learning more about Islam; - individual converts in need; and - voluntary associations supporting converts. We hosted a series of educational-cum-social events, sequenced in harmony with Islam’s sacred calendar. - Ramadan Iftar (April) - Eid ul-Fitr celebration (May) - ‘Sacred Seasons’ event (June), introducing the great pilgrimage to Makkah. - ‘Sacred Seasons’ (August), introducing the sacred calendar for the new Hijri year - We hosted an entourage of preeminent scholars from the heartlands of Islam (September), giving our beneficiaries direct access to these wells of sacred knowledge. Our inaugural Eid event saw around 100 beneficiaries attend, the others around 30 beneficiaries each time. All of our target groups were represented. These provide much-needed social spaces for people who are a ‘minority of a minority’: research shows that it is important for convert Muslims’ wellbeing that they have culturally hospitable places in which to deepen and develop their faith. As well as helping with mental and emotional wellbeing, this can support them to be comfortably amphibious between the UK’s ‘heritage Muslim’ cultures, and the other communities living alongside these - and so promote racial and religious harmony.

Financial Review
The trustees believe there is no material uncertainty about the charity continuing as a going concern. A substantial grant from Muslim Hands puts the charity in a good position to invest in its medium- to long-term plans. Obtaining sufficient unrestricted funds is a challenge for many charities, and Third Heritage Fellowship is no exception. The trustees are mindful that the reporting period closes with only a minimal unrestricted balance. The charity has developed good links with the Muslim community in Nottingham. Donations and other support received so far suggest this is the beginning of a growing base of supporters who can help the charity diversify its funding streams. The charity was exposed to very few risks during this first year of its existence, and the trustees have not considered a reserves policy at this stage. This will be reviewed as circumstances change. During the bulk of the reporting period, the principal source of funds was donations from the public (£3267). Two thirds of these funds were donated as zakat (£2139). The charity also received two small, unrestricted grants of £500 and £1000 from Rafah International (registered charity no. 1168436). Late in the year the charity received two further grants: 1) £10,576 of charitable funds were given outright by Muslim Hands, being funds initially raised for the aims of the Mu’allif Initiative while it was incubated within Penny Appeal, and transferred by Penny Appeal to them. 2) The charity also received a grant of £55,000 from Muslim Hands, to cover twelve months of significantly expanded activities. Renewal is expected to be considered at the end of each year.
