BSSEC CIC is a membership organisation working in the West Midlands who works to influence statutory agencies and increasing the ability of social enterprises in the region to maximise business opportunities and grow their social value. Our work is five-pronged: 1. BSSEC is part of region-wide team working with the West Midlands Combined Authority to im-plement its social economy growth plan and ecosystem for growth approach. We provide es-sential sector engagement to ensure WMCA plans are known and understood; we promote and advocate the ecosystem approach and support the growth of the social economy movement. 2. We provide a conduit for information to/from the sector regarding national policy develop-ments and local opportunities including those arising from the regeneration and infrastructure developments in Birmingham, and COVID recovery initiatives. 3. We maintain an information service including a website, social media and blog on current is-sues. 4. We identify and promote social enterprise more generally, especially through Roundtables, managing networks and facilitating events. 5. Support the BSSEC membership and the broader social economy within the West Midlands to understand the new/emerging policy landscape, promote involvement in new capacity building initiatives and bringing in new partners. In 2023/24 BSSEC CIC ran a series of Roundtables around the theme of ‘eco-systems’ that were online group based to enable shared discussions and panel of expert speakers sharing sector knowledge and organisational perspective approaches. Reports followed each session. 1. Developing a social finance ecosystem in the West Midlands (16th May 2023) 2. Business support within the social economy ecosystem (4th July 2023) 3. Strategic branding for the social economy (5th Sept 2023) 4. Social Economy is the solution (14th Nov 2023) 5. How can the social economy support the achievement of net zero? [24th Jan 2024] 6. Are social economy organisations making the best use of technology to grow their businesses? [12th March 2024] BSSEC CIC developed a new Social Economy Forum network in September 2023 primarily meeting face to face mostly monthly [6 sessions]. Reports from these sessions are used by WMCA to inform planning and resources and these sessions are thematic and move around the region. BSSEC CIC delivered 420 hours of thought-leadership, knowledge-sharing and expert-led discussion to 0ver 70 organisations. Key issues are reported to WMCA advisory group. Feedback includes: - I always learn something when I come to these sessions! - I have changed the way I describe my work and learnt a new language around the social econ-omy. - These sessions are so important for sector growth. BSSEC CIC provides a valuable information service to our subscriber lists and through our online presence (LinkedIn and X]. Information goes to key stakeholders of over 600 members, individuals and organisations. We host expert blogs covering a range of topics including social finance, managing your team, community activities. This is part of a conscious effort to connect with greater numbers of social entrepreneurs and to ensure continuing relevance in a rapidly changing social economy landscape. Over the past 12 months BSSEC have been active members of the WMCA Social Economy Advisory Group. BSSEC CIC sits on the Government’s VCSE Crown Advisory Group on behalf of its members. Topics have included the implementation a range of Government departments procurement opportunities, training and inclusion of VCSE organisations in preparation for procurement, impact measurement and grants. This information is shared through our information service. BSSEC CIC has been working over the past year to support Barrow Cadbury Foundation in the development of a new Alliance for Economic Justice movement in Birmingham. This work concerns movement building for system change around poverty in the city
BSSEC CIC’s key stakeholders are our members, our subscribers and all those concerned with growing, contributing to and developing the social economy across the West Midlands. These are from the social economy itself and public and private sectors and private companies. We are a membership organisation and have subscribers to our information service. Our 5 directors have lived experience of social enterprise and the social economy, they advise on the strategic direction of the organisation and feedback on the delivery programme. We hold regular events for the broad range of social economy organisations that include policy makers, infrastructure support, social investment providers, universities, social economy organisations, public sector and private sector. These are evaluated and the reports are used to inform the topics discussed and planning for future events, face to face and online. Information from consultation concerning barriers to growth and emerging opportunities is circulated to all new and past attendees to inform their work. Consultation is key to the success of these events. Recently following a Roundtable in March 2024 on technology and the social economy where participants reported that wanted a further session if they were to tackle barriers to implementation – BSSEC was able to approach WMCA to get funds to run a further event which will be delivered in November. We request feedback from all our work including events, networking sessions and our information service. We are keen to understand that our sessions are relevant, useful and that the shared information promotes opportunities for the sector. Subscribers and members both report on successful exchanges and new opportunities resulting from information shared. We have also changed the format of the information service to make it easier to read following feedback. BSSEC CIC also consults with its funders, Barrow Cadbury Trust and commissioners through reports and meetings.
