September 2022 - August 2023: LONDON: September - December 2022 >>Magic Mondays at Robin Hood Community Garden: weekly Friday parent & child sessions for under 5s, working with parents on low incomes. Average 10 - 18 children each week, lots of regulars and a visit by Grasshoppers Nursery from a local estate. Staff particularly supported local families to get involved with volunteer days at the Nursery, lots of positive feedback around decrease in loneliness and isolation as new parents, sharing of resources and co-support by parents getting to know other parents who enjoy taking their children outdoors. September 2022: - Hackney Marshes / Tree Musketeers Tree Nursery Open Day craft sessions for children - Over 250 visitors attended the event. SR activities supported by 4x parent volunteers offering open-ended collective large mud art landscape, natural twine & material stitching, green woodwork and making cards with natural inks. FROME/ SOMERSET Sept - Oct 2022, Super Roots continued Frome Town Council funded programme of open access Pop up Play project offering “risky” and adventurous play in green spaces (“off the beaten track”) around Frome. Engagement was high (on average from 15 - 40 children per session). All sessions were aimed at families local to each location, so marketing was through leaflets and word of mouth and purposefully not shared on social media by FTC. Feedback was 100% positive! with families joining sessions from one location to the next/ -this meant lots of Frome families attending reported they’d never visited these places before! Feedback book at every session and online questionnaires: families & young people reported they really enjoyed having opportunities to - meet other like-minded children/ young people and for the parents of these to socialise while children were engaged, particularly the older 9-13 years get “bored” in Frome parks/ green spaces - practise fire lighting, knots & ropes, and other “survival” or bushcraft type activities, that they don’t normally do - create and experiment with different materials & resources they hadn’t thought about as playing inc. games, crafting & techniques (eg. carpet cardboard, inner tubes, bottle tops, lashing sticks to tree trunks) - for (supported) “risky play”: building swings, being wild on hammocks, using tools, tree climbing - again this linked to engaging older children who were bored of their local parks We (Rachel Davies & Ellen Vellacott) fed back to Frome Town Council (FTC) that we wanted to create something more regular, targeted, consistent to build deeper relationships with families and communities, as well increase capacity by supporting a volunteer programme. October 2022: - FTC funded community adult learning sessions: games, craft & activity ideas using natural & recycled materials. - Feedback was supportive but clear that timings were wrong, more would have attended - 6x Play Wild Sessions at the Quarry: carpentry, craft, circus (silks/ hoop), cooking, storytelling, nature connection through wild and free play in amongst the Quarry habitats - Oversubscribed (25 - 30 children attended each one, with waiting lists of up to 10 children), positive child/ parent feedback via conversations and emails, more requested - Frome Field to Fork “Pumpkin event”, Cheese & Grain offering family friendly/ inclusive natural crafts. - Over 200 attended, lots of positive feedback from organisations & parents, who felt a previous lack of environmentally-friendly but playful offer within these events November/ December 2023: - 3x Recycled crafts for inclusive Xmas fairs: Frome Families for the Future/ Sustainable Witham/ Future Shed youth-led MakeSpace - Huge support from parents, wanting help/ ideas around creating natural/ recycled craft and gift ideas. Loved Super Roots offers: “fun to make”, “unique” “want to learn more” November - March: Ellen Vellacott had to step down due to extenuating circumstances (caring for her mother with stage 4 brain tumour, died Feb 2023) April 2023: - Easter Play Wild sessions - Popular/ oversubscribed, 25 children per day. Consistent positive feedback re. need for nature connection that was “adventurous”, “exciting for kids”, “new experiences” April - July 2023: - Weekly home ed forest school sessions at The Quarry, in partnership with Wild Tribe - Financially supported by SR, for inclusive sessions/ sliding scale/ offered to wider reach of families struggling within mainstream/ SEND/ Frome Learning Partnership May 2023: - Shindig Festival imaginative play build: - Hugely positive feedback from the festival organisers/ families, particularly women around feeling empowered: children co-built structures “first time I’ve ever used a tool with my child, didn’t think I or they could do it” “my child wants to live here” - 2 day Drama sessions: very popular (25 children p/ day) with waiting list, ended in brilliant performance with audience of over 35 people. June 2023: - 100 years of National Bike Week, bringing recycled arts to a Sustainable Witham community Bike Day, “pimp my bike” in collaboration with Mutartis, information from Missing Links, games with Frome Community Bike Project: first time event, very popular / positive feedback from parents who struggle to get kids cycling together. - FTC funded/ organised Refugee week with Caravan Arts: free day bringing books on refugees & immigration/ zine making, adventurous play and storytelling at Victoria Park - Plastic Fantastic at The Mount, with Caravan Arts funded by FTC, bringing recycled arts making instruments: difficult to engage area - lots of children attended w/ out parents. - Supporting/ training staff to establish regular Scrap/ Loose Parts Play session by Victoria Park cafe: very positive response from staff/ volunteers/ parents/ kids, age range 1 - 17yrs. Building up daily regular use, 6 days a week: developing community through being free & accessible, open ended play. July 2023 - collaboration with No Time To Waste Arts, bringing Tyre Turtle Gusita and recycled art workshop raising awareness about waste (plastics, tyres), connection to ocean pollution - School Recycled Craft days: Avanti Park, Vallis First School - Play Wild holiday sessions, fully booked/ waiting list - 15 yr old, work experience: learning about outdoor workshops/ outdoor photography & filming: positive feedback from parent and school - Invited to participate in Green & Healthy Frome conference, 3 year climate action fund - Women’s Circle starts at The Quarry, by member of SMUT (Singles & Mothers Unite Together) - EV ran a Play workshop at Frome Town Hall, with FTC Nikki Cox talking about Play Strategy commissioned by Edventure & Somerset Skills & Learning August 2023: Quarry - Play Wild sessions, fully booked/ waiting list: circus skills, outdoor & bush crafts, cooking, games - Metal work & welding workshops in collaboration with F. Jones, fully booked - amazing feedback - Family whittling workshop pilot: - National Play Day, FTC funded session in torrential rains! Re-located due to flooding, approx. 30-40 participants through into Welshmill Woods, shifted session to fire & survival craft instead of river activities on Rodden Meadow - Valley Fest: open access recycled arts, scrap materials play building Quarry: Infrastructure: installed a zip wire, wood store, volunteers space, re-built compost toilet in the Quarry. With volunteers on weekdays Shaun Turner has - developed volunteer area, inputting sink/ hot drinks area and compost toilet by the shed - installed green wall along 2nd shipping container - installed sedum green roof on shed/ compost toilet - built polytunnel to plant saplings - No dig concept to develop and plant 2 vegetable beds - trimmed back and planted more fruit bushes - village supported to plant giant sunflowers & other sunflower species as an entrance pathway - Pressure washed and fixed chicken coop/ metal safety fencing
Stakeholders: Children - Discuss sessions around opening & closing circles, fave/ worst/ surprising bits or open invitation for things they want to share Action press FTC to support in creating regular open access or targeted group(s), help to build SR capacity for more adventurous & inclusive play in Frome. This includes staffing pool, admin support via Ruth Knagg. Parents - Try to send feedback forms after each session Action: better rhythm to send out feedback form consistently - admin support/ allocate a day after each block/ end of term dedicated to sending out feedback forms/ collate info gathered from sessions. Generally, parents want more frequency in Quarry sessions, to offer weekly smaller groups.
