Alpha Vesta CIC are a community interest company founded in February 2019 by Lucy Whittaker with a very strong foundation and mission statement of ‘Breaking the cycle of domestic abuse through awareness, prevention and early intervention’. Their vision is to reduce the social and economic impacts of domestic abuse by ensuring that anyone impacted has a safe, supportive place to turn to at the earliest point. They deliver on their mission of ‘breaking the cycle of domestic abuse’ by engaging, empowering and educating communities and workforces to recognise the early indicators of domestic abuse, respond effectively and create safe spaces for adults or children affected to reach out at the earliest point. Alpha Vesta believe workplaces and community organisations are valuable places to embed culture and understanding around domestic abuse as not only are they impacted in a number of ways by domestic abuse themselves but a culture of understanding by Community Leaders and Employers ripples out to everyone across that community or workforce. Alpha Vesta have continued to be funded by National Lottery: Essex Community Fund, Police Fire and Crime Commissioner for Essex as well as Essex Community Foundation and now run a total of 9 online public domestic abuse awareness sessions and workshops every month. Additional funding has allowed them to work directly with Businesses and Organisations creating bespoke training sessions, developing policies and procedures as well as an ‘Education and Empowerment Programme’ for survivors of domestic abuse to regain their independence and move closer to the Labour Market. Their experience of frontline practice and academic study creates a fresh approach to understanding domestic abuse and charities across the domestic abuse sector have also been undertaking their training to further their skills and understanding. 98% of those that attend sessions run by Alpha Vesta rate them as Excellent or Very Good. 99% say that they will go on to use the learning in their workplace and/or community. 99% said they would attend more sessions run by Alpha Vesta.
Alpha Vesta work alongside SETDAB – Southend, Essex and Thurrock Domestic Abuse Board as one of their partners as well as being a member of their Reference Group. Alpha Vesta are also now members of the Essex Local Partnership Board who are a new requirement under the NEW DA Act which came into force in November 2021. Alpha Vesta also submit regular reports to their funders (National Lottery, Essex Community Foundation and Essex Police Fire and Crime Commissioner) sharing details of both qualitative and quantitative impact measurements. Alpha Vesta’s Survivors Symposium and broader Survivor and Insight Network offers the opportunity for victims, survivors, employers, employees and those affected by domestic abuse to share their experience of how this impacted on their ability to work, engage with their community or impacted others within the workplace and community. Lucy Whittaker, Founding Director of Alpha Vesta now sits on Working Groups for both Essex Police and Essex County Council to support them around training and the building of policies and procedures around domestic abuse both for employees and service users. She also continues to provide training to frontline police officers, detectives and investigators at Essex Police. We have also worked alongside clinical commissioning groups and university partnership trusts to build their own workforce policies and procedures as well as providing training. Those that attend Alpha Vesta Training sessions are asked to complete a feedback form to rate the session, how it improved their learning and understanding as well as whether they felt this learning will go on to influence their workplace and community. Online Chat and Emails are also collated, and regular feedback reports produced so training can be robustly reviewed at regular intervals
