Work continued in our current venues of Willow Brook, Donwell House Care Home, Woodridge Gardens, The Forage and Building Blocks Day Care Centre for the first part of the year. Then in the summer we finally moved into Usworth Park in Concord. The park was originally founded by miners from Usworth Colliery, which closed in 1974. Although only a fraction of its original size, it's still a source of pride with a bowling green, flowers, events and peace and quiet among its attractions. Local Ward Member Cllr Michael Walker had previously invited us to join the park and set up permanent residency with a dedicated patch of 120 feet which we could use as an allotment. This gives us the opportunity of a 510 percent increase on crops. The current Bowling Group who is situated with their own grounds granted us permission to use their pavilion until the new one had been completed and allocated with a lease. In January 2024 we finally moved into the new building which then allowed us to deliver The Links for Life Program through Sunderland Council. This meant we could provide sessions in gardening, well-being, drop-in sessions and crafts to all ages and no longer only children. Our commitment to working partnerships in the community remains a priority and we've continued to develop and flourish within this area. Such partnerships developed included: - Local community groups Adventure Into Art, Absolute Cabaret CIC, Asda Washington, The Co-op Concord, Usworth Bowling Club, Hannah Graham Storyteller, Leaf and Bean, and Northeast Land, Sea and Aircraft Museum - We continued to work with The Rotary Club planting thousands of crocus bulbs in the park and Keep Washington Tidy donated more high-viz vests for when we litter pick in the park. - Local company The Northeast Land, Sea and Air Museum invited us along for a FREE tour of their venue which included transport to and from. The volunteers and children made a day of it and stayed for a picnic. - Again we were invited to attend this year's Remembrance Parade where one of our children and a volunteer represented the club and laid a wreath. - We were supported by Sunderland Carers Centre, Northeast Fire and Rescue and Washington Athletics FC at our festival this year. Deputy Mayoress Allison Chisnall opened it. - Youths completing The Prince's Trust Award with the Northeast Fire and Rescue, joined us over a six-week period to volunteer in the garden. - We teamed up with Training In Care to offer training in a number of topics to benefit our adult volunteers. One of our young volunteers Eva Robinson age 1O who suffers from Porthes Disease, raised funds with a sponsored event in her wheelchair, completing laps around the perimeter of her local community building The Forage. Eva raised funds to buy a caravan for the club to turn into a mobile classroom. Once again there has been plenty of flourishing celebrations and events for the children along with their families to enjoy all at a wildly discounted and affordable price reaching again a substantial footfall of 585 people. These have included King Charles III Coronation, a Harry Potter Afternoon Tea, For The Love of Gardening Festival 2023, a Christmas Party and a visit to the Easter then the Christmas Panto at the Tyne Theatre in Newcastle. We also introduced an outdoor Scarefest this year with having the space in the Park
Children, parents, and carers who attend the activities and events, some with learning difficulties, neurodiversity, and physical disabilities. The children are actively involved each week in choosing activity subjects, planting designs, event themes, and hosting market stalls. We have a very active Facebook page where we encourage children and their parents or carers to post and give feedback. We have several Facebook Messenger groups where parents are involved in upcoming developments of the club. Care home and assisted living residents and staff who attend and participate or watch activities. Informal feedback takes place before, during and after the weekly activities at the venues with the residents and the volunteers. We meet with each venue's management several times a year and have hosted corporate volunteer days for care home directors so they can see what the club is all about. Volunteers who are all local community members run the weekly activities, help to organise and run events assist with behind the scenes admin driving moving and building equipment and provide garden maintenance. We also host monthly meetings with volunteers for more structured and lengthier discussions and follow up. Washington North Ward Local Councillors are kept up to date with planning and community commitments and strongly support our objectives. We are also lucky to work with many generous community groups and businesses who support the club including The Friends of Usworth Park Group Asda Washington Homebase Rotary Club and Coop Washington amongst others. Volunteers have regular meetings and email communications with funders and supporters, and the children have presented to partners, as well as being invited along to partner events. We also attend the Washington VCAS meetings hosted by the City of Sunderland to work collaboratively with local providers and ensure not duplicating efforts or competing for funding and development opportunities.
