The company has worked closely with the local Housing Association Peabody to design and create an accessible garden from a run-down area previously used as a small allotment for several people where residents could rent a raised bed to grow vegetables and flowers in. The raised beds were dilapidated, not well used, the land was not accessible and very unstable to walk on. The company has helped to project manage the refurbishment of the site, ensuring the design and measurements meet several accessibility needs including wheelchair and Rollator users and those whose mobility is less, to enable all abilities to enjoy the garden. The company has worked with Northwest Kent Countryside Partnership to run volunteer days on site with the aim to garner local interest as well as work closely with other local gardening groups including hosting a meeting of the gardening groups as well as hosting the local nature forum. The sole Director and driver of this initiative unfortunately suffered a close personal loss during this period and that coupled with the seasonal nature of the project meant that whilst there was a strong start to the year, progress stalled during the mid and latter parts of the year. That said the intention is to get the project and company back on track in the next fiscal year.
The company has engaged and consulted with the local community via Facebook, local open days, local community organisations and the Local Housing Association including featuring in their newsletters. Polls were posted on the company’s Facebook Pages and individual feedback was sought from volunteers and other stakeholders engaged with throughout the year. The company has 137 members on Facebook, the majority of whom are local residents from Thamesmead and a small group of 10 or so local people have expressed their interest in being involved as volunteers in the community garden. At each touch point stakeholders are asked for their feedback and suggestions.
