Learning Keys CIC, a supplementary school operating at Pollards Hill Library, has had a profound impact on the community through its free reading program and tailored tuition sessions for primary aged children. The organization supports students struggling with phonics, reading, spelling, and comprehension, while also inspiring enthusiasm and confidence in learning. Parents report significant improvements in children’s reading levels, comprehension, and vocabulary building, with many children developing a newfound enjoyment of reading which is a crucial factor linked to higher academic achievement. The tuition program has fostered a high level of eagerness among children to attend sessions, read decodable books, and engage actively in their educational progress. There is strong optimism for the success of participating children in upcoming phonics and SATS assessments, reflecting the program's effectiveness. Feedback from parents highlights the program’s dual benefits of structured learning and promoting library exploration, offering a much-needed resource for the community's children to thrive academically and developmentally.
The company’s stakeholders are pupils from nearby primary schools of and visitors to Merton(from neighbouring boroughs in the surrounding area). We gave feedback forms to parents using the supplementary school for the first time to fill in a short questionnaire about their child’s experience. This has helped us to build up a profile of local consumers’ needs and what we can do to meet them more effectively. Our research has enabled us to identify that there are about 120 households in the village without access to cars or where residents have impaired mobility, and a further 200 or so households who now use the shop for at least 40 per cent of their grocery shopping. We encourage those working in the shop to pick up ideas for the business when talking to customers and we keep a “suggestions box” for customers to provide details of products which they would like to see stocked in the shop.
