Directors' report period ended 31 March 2024

The directors present their report with the financial statements of the company for the period ended 31 March 2024

Principal activities of the company

Principal Activities Heart Song Collective’s principal mission is to provide regular singing-for-wellbeing sessions to residents of South East London. These sessions focus on co-regulation opportunities and teaching participants about nervous system regulation in a trauma-informed, accessible environment.

Political and charitable donations

There were no political or charitable donations made within this accounting period.

Additional information

Key Activities and Community Benefit During the financial year, the company delivered: 37 "Song Medicine" sessions, with a total of 67 participants. 3 "Park Sing!" sessions, attended by 21 participants. A special "Cosy Winter Songs and Snuggles" session in December 2023, with 12 participants. Group singing sessions at the Ecstatic Dance Festival and Oxford Storytelling Festival in 2023. All sessions were trauma-informed, sober (suitable for the recovery community), ticketed on a sliding scale for affordability, and designed to be inclusive for beginners, experienced singers, and professionals alike. Our sessions are also queer led and fully LGBTQIA+ inclusive. These activities have provided meaningful benefits to the community by fostering wellbeing, building connections, and offering accessible education about singing and self-regulation. Example participant case study: a retired, queer person (she/they pronouns) in their 50s who firmly believed they “couldn’t sing” has attended multiple sessions. From finding it very triggering and scary at the start, they have grown hugely in confidence, sing with us regularly, and have joined a local choir that centres political activism. Future Plans In 2025, Heart Song Collective plans to restructure its offerings by: Offering "Song Medicine" sessions once monthly in South East London and in a venue North of the river, allowing wider participation for Londoners. Providing free community singing sessions as part of Nunhead Cemetery's Open Day, Hilly Fields Midsummer Fayre, and the Buddhafield Festival. These initiatives will help expand HSC’s reach, bringing wellbeing and co-regulation opportunities to a broader audience, while maintaining accessibility and inclusivity for all participants.

Company activities and impact

Heart Song Collective provides weekly singing for wellbeing sessions at its local Community Centre. These sessions are financially accessible to those with lower financial means (tickets on a sliding scale), suitable for those in substance addiction recovery programmes, are accessible for those with no singing or music-reading experience, and are queer led and LGBTQIA+ inclusive. The sessions provide a safe, trauma-informed environment in which participants can gain nervous system regulation (both autoregulation and coregulation) through singing together, learn about self-care and nervous system regulation, gain in vocal confidence and make local social connections.
