Sunshine Co-operative CIC runs a delivery service throughout the North-East of England from its base in Sunderland and runs a shop based in High Street West, Sunderland, with a small garden at the rear. The CIC has been successful in sourcing locally produced and grown food, organic and otherwise ethically sourced. The focus has been on the well-being of the customer and their environmental concerns. Our environmental policy includes reducing plastic waste and recycling and glass bottles, with a deposit return system. Our shop has a refill station which allows customers to bring their own containers for loose dried food and liquid cleaning and beauty products. This cuts down on unnecessary packaging. We link with our main fruit and veg supplier to takes back all the packaging to either reuse or to be compacted at their farm for recycling. The CICs website lists the health benefits of the fruit & veg listed and links to healthy recipes page. All food is vegetarian with gluten free and vegan options. Our community shop has disabled access and a community room. We run classes focusing on healthy and sustainable living. We have maintained a strong group of 10 volunteers, 2 of which have special needs which we cater to. We operate a gardening group which consists of retirees and a young person with learning difficulties. We have retirees volunteering with us who have worked brilliantly with some of our younger trainees with disabilities. These intergenerational relationships have been extremely beneficial to both parties. Volunteers also help to pack fruit & veg boxes, clean and man the shop and go out on deliveries. We are working with Choices College (NHS funded) to provide experience for young people facing barriers into employment. We continue our close relationship with a local permaculture garden who supply us with fruit and veg. The proceeds allow this organisation to grow and donate to the local church and other food donation organisations. We’ve added another community garden and their associated Link School as suppliers - giving the students the opportunity to understand how their produce can then be sold and proceeds to back to their garden. We have formed a partnership with other CIC’s on the farm-to-fork journey and will continue to grow this partnership. Our own garden has gone from strength to strength and this year, heavily relied on our own compost created from waste fruit and veg from the shop. We grew our community outreach work with a funded project that worked with the 55+ and asylum seeker communities. The emphasis was on movement, music, food and good company which addressed the issues of social isolation, poor physical and mental health and poor diet.
The seven Directors of the CIC during the year were: Claire Wayman (also Company secretary), Wojciech Bozyk, Tracey West, Shaun Jackson, Andrea Clayson, Margaret Bruce and Ruth Hardy. All Directors live in Sunderland and are passionate about helping to create a thriving and healthy community. Quarterly board meetings take place with directors. Monthly staff meetings are fed back to the directors. Surveys are also sent out to customers and users and a feedback box is available in-store.
The aggregate amount of emoluments paid to or receivable by directors in respect of qualifying services was £12830 There were no other transactions or arrangements in connection with the remuneration of directors, or compensation for director’s loss of office, which require to be disclosed
No transfer of assets other than for full consideration
