COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

RAPTOR AWARDS COMMUNITY INTEREST COMPANY

Company Number: 10174145 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 4 April 2024

Company activities and impact

Raptor Awards CIC is concerned with improving and promoting the welfare of birds of prey held in captivity. We achieve our aim by working with the bird of prey community to increase knowledge about bird of prey husbandry through education and training. The bird of prey community includes existing and prospective bird of prey keepers. We consult with the bird of prey community about promoting bird of prey welfare and produce and maintain national and occupational standards for bird of prey husbandry and management, training birds of prey, and bird abatement. These standards describe the knowledge and skills that an individual needs to undertake these activities. Based upon these industry standards we promote best welfare practice through education and training, developing training courses and assessments. These are made available to the bird of prey community via approved centres and are delivered through a network of approved instructors and assessors, and through our on-line platforms. Remote and on-line methods have now become a core part of our operations with the majority of our activities now taking place on-line. Additional on-line courses have been added and we continue to keep these under review. Raptor Awards has remotely undertaken the following activities: Provided certificates for those demonstrating competence as a bird of prey keepers. The benefits to those holding certificates are that they are able to demonstrate competence, e.g. to breeders when seeking to purchase a bird of prey; to potential employers; to event organisers etc. Those qualified may be less likely to lose or injure a bird of prey, to incur expensive health care costs due to lack of competence and may increase chances of winning contracts / tenders compared to unqualified applicants Supported NBC Environment in the training and assessment of it’s team leaders who use birds of prey for pest/ bird control (note there are bird of prey welfare issues associated with some practitioners) Operated an on-line Directory for those wishing to source a bird of prey professional. This benefits the professional members of the bird of prey community as they are able to promote their offer, also those seeking bird of prey professionals can access these individuals via the Directory Managed the International Register for Bird of Prey Professionals. This is a membership organisation that offers free content for bird of prey owners, largely for the purposes of continuous professional development (CPD). Much time has been spent sourcing content for this. Upgrades were introduced following extensive testing of the on-line system. Supporting bird of prey professionals in meeting the requirements of the Animal Activities License (AAL) and other relevant legislation e.g. Transport of Animals Focus on staffing requirements, induction checklist Continued to provide advice and support for those organisations that must comply with the Animal Activities Licensing Regulations 2018, i.e. Keeping and Training Animals for Exhibition and Selling Animals as Pets. Continued to provide advice and support for those responsible for inspecting under the Animal Activities Licensing Regulations 2018. Our input has benefited the community by helping to ensure that the guidance to licensing inspectors is consistent with the highest welfare standards All of the above have benefited members of the community, and in doing so have contributed to the welfare of captive birds of prey. Note also that other countries have shown an interest in the Standards that we set with regards to bird of prey welfare. Discussions have taken place with the USA around adopting these.

Consultation with stakeholders

In addition to bird of prey keepers our stakeholders include: Those tasked with inspecting bird of prey centres that require an animal activities license for keeping and training animals for exhibition and/or selling animals as pets Bird of prey centres that require an animal activities license for keeping and training animals for exhibition and/or selling animals as pets Bird abatement organisations As we work more remotely now and maximise the use of technology, meetings take place with smaller numbers of people. Throughout the period 2023 to 2024 we have held remote meetings with selected members of the community depending upon the content to be discussed. Following proposed revisions to the Secretary of State’s Standards for Modern Zoo Practice, members were made aware of the tethering proposals within and given the opportunity to contribute to the consultation. This issue has not yet been resolved due the change in Government. We’ve kept the community informed via Raptor Awards Facebook page and Raptor Awards Members page where we receive feedback and useful information to assist us in supporting the community. We also now have a Twitter/ X account and are looking at the potential for other social media platforms.
