COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

MANCHESTER BME NETWORK CIC

Company Number: 11968651 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 31 March 2024

Company activities and impact

The Manchester BME Network CIC is an organisation providing support, information, connections and capacity building for voluntary, community and other not for profits groups working with Black, Asian and Minoritised Communities in Manchester and beyond. All our work is either commissioned or grant aided and our primary objectives and approach is to engage and involve BAME communities in the work be it research, consultation or frontline delivery. We highly respect (value) the time our members give to our work and whenever possible we value their time. Our primary objectives are to empower and enable our communities to access services and influence policy and general developments so that the needs of their communities are better understood and better met. This year our projects have included: Older People and Cost of Living Crisis Research with MUARG Continuing on from our work with Manchester Urban Ageing Research Group, we worked in partnership to deliver the launch event for the conclusion to their research into how older people from BAME communities are coping with the Cost of Living Crisis. South Asian Network – information sharing South Asian groups, Activists and Community Connectors who first came together during the Pandemic to work with Public Health and Manchester City Council to ensure health information & messages were circulated in a timely and appropriate manner. Although the MBMEN stopped providing the secretariat for the SA Network in 2022, we agreed to carry on sharing information to everyone involved via email and Whatsapp – we shared at least 10 -20 pieces of information weekly. Rafiki Food Project originally set up in 2020 to offer culturally appropriate Ethnic Food to organisations and foodbanks, serving ethnic communities in need, this project has gone from strength to strength. It has allowed over 30 BAME groups to access cultural food that is often too prohibitive in cost for their clients. Rafiki groups have also benefited from organised capacity support sessions to help them find the best model to provide for their communities i.e. Food bank, Pantry or weekly/monthly hot food provision. Rafiki Event Tea with the Lord Mayor of Manchester in December 2023, Rafiki Members were invited to a special afternoon tea with Cllr Yasmin Dar, the first South Asian female councillor to become the Lord Mayor of Manchester. Representatives attended from 14 Rafiki groups and were introduced to Cllr Dar. Each attendee had time to say a few words about their work. It was beneficial for groups to see and be inspired by Cllr Dar and learn more from each other. Allotment donation for the second year running, we kindly acknowledged a donation of £582.18 to be spent on cultural food for Rafiki groups from Rusholme allotment holders. Unison donation £500 donation was very kindly received from Unison Members in Manchester to buy cultural food for Rafiki Members. Household Support Fund MBMEN has continued to be funded Manchester City Council’s Household Support Fund to provide further funding of small grants for Our Manchester Food Partnership members for the provision of Cultural food. International Women’s Day Event March 2024 at St Thomas Centre with special guest, Lord Mayor of Manchester, Cllr Yasmin Dar. This event was funded from a partnership of MBMEN members. Women from a range of organisations and individuals came together to celebrate with each other, share food, sing and dance. Uncertain Futures project at Manchester Art Gallery engagement, steering & advice from MBMEN Senior Associate, Atiha Chaudry, and MBMEN Associate, Rohina Gafoor. This ongoing project is exploring the lives of women who are 50+ and the barriers they face in retirement, health and well-being. GM Moving – Tackling Inequalities Network a new network set up by GM Sport to look at the barriers some communities face with regards to physical activities and health & wellbeing. It helped to encourage organisations and small groups to try out new ideas to encourage their users to move more. Small pots of funding were awarded to those groups who came forward to pitch their ideas at a ‘Community Soup’ style events. Senior Associates from the MBMEN were instrumental in advising GM Sport on the barriers to consider in setting up the network and continue to provide strategic advice and support on a regular basis. Places & Spaces Fund – Crowdfunding Project Funded by GM Moving & Crowdfunder UK, Manchester BME Network were commissioned to recruit up to 6 organisations to work with who had not used the crowdfunder approach to raise funds before. The funders were interested in investigating the barriers to this type of funding in diverse communities. We supported each organisation to mould their idea into a crowdfunding campaign. Egality Health Manchester BME Network work in collaboration with Egality Health, which is a community engagement agency, addressing health inequalities in health research. The network's role is to connect Egality to the diverse ethnic communities, to increase diversity in health research, in order to achieve better health outcomes. In particular, MBMEN became part of group of community organisations involved in a project funded by NHIR called ‘Better Collaboration for Better Health’. CVD workshop funded to engage & encourage attendance of 10-12 Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic individuals at a workshop to raise awareness of Cardio-Vascular Disease in Ethnic Communities. Cycle & Stride consultancy a Senior MBMEN Associate provided strategic and culturally appropriate advice in attending several ‘Cycle & Stride’ events to explore the barriers of and ways to encourage BAME communities to walk and cycle more. Partnership work with GM Ethnic Communities Network MBMEN works closely with our colleagues in the GMBAME network for about 8 years now. This includes joint quarterly networking events which feature speakers and focus groups on current topics, information sharing and networking. This event is free to attend for members. We also share information from the Manchester area to feed into the GMBAME monthly e-bulletin. We continue to share information via social media and email throughout the year on all topics relevant to our members.

Consultation with stakeholders

Our main stakeholders are those on our database – largely from Ethnic Community led organisations and individuals from across the Manchester district. We are in contact regularly providing relevant information ranging covering subjects like funding, health news, policy changes and events etc. We often provide support to groups on a 1-2-1 basis at our office & via email or at group sessions. Other organisations that we consider Stakeholders are the newly established GM Ethnic Communities Network (GMECN), FareShare Greater Manchester, GM Centre for Voluntary Organisations (GMCVO), Manchester City Council, Manchester Population Health, Community Health Equity Manchester, Big Lottery Community Fund, The University of Manchester, GM Moving, Egality Health, Manchester City Art Gallery, Manchester Museum, and Our Manchester Food Partnership We are in regular contact with those we work with and most of our projects have some form of formal feedback and learning following project completion. Our project workshops and other information exchanges have also been used to gauge valuable insight into member needs and feedback. We try to use this feedback to inform future workshops and events.
