Directors' report period ended 31 March 2024

The directors present their report with the financial statements of the company for the period ended 31 March 2024

Principal activities of the company

The company is limited by guarantee. It was formed with the object of improving the quality of life for the inhabitants of Llanidloes and the surrounding area through the provision of opportunities in partnership with others. Further research on future heritage projects was undertaken during the year relating to the history of the public houses of the town and the rich Chartist History of the area. This research will lead to future publications and the potential to develop a Chartist Heritage Festival for the town similar to and possibly in conjunction with that held annually in November in Newport Gwent. The pubs research was worked up into a successful talk in September 2023 which was delivered as part of local fund raising activities for the Urdd National Eisteddfod to be held at Meifod. The costs of the talk were met from the proceeds of past book sales and raised in excess of £1,000 for the Urdd. Related to the historical research into local pubs, the company facilitated the development of a project to investigate the potential of a community purchase of an iconic local hostelry, the Crown & Anchor Inn. There is no doubt that the downturn in the hospitality trade that commenced with the Covid 19 pandemic has significantly impacted on both the number and viability of public houses in Llanidloes. Of over 30 historic pubs recorded in the last 200 years the town is down to a just a handful of such establishments. The project was successful in securing funds from the Making a Difference in Powys Fund operated by PAVO (UK Shared Prosperity Funding) to undertake public consultation and a feasibility study into the potential for a community purchase. This has subsequently led to the formation of the Crown & Anchor Regeneration Project as a Community Benefit Society, which is currently actively raising funds to effect the purchase of the pub.
