COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

ROTHERHAM BROADCASTING CIC

Company Number: 13003287 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 31 March 2024

Company activities and impact

Rotherham Broadcasting CIC operates a community radio station that enables individuals in the local Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham and the city of Sheffield to participate in the development, delivery, and management of a high-quality community radio station. In February 2021 the company was awarded a Small-Scale Community DAB licence for Rotherham and Sheffield from Ofcom (the UK’s communication regulator). During the financial year of 2023 -2024, Rotherham Broadcasting CIC T/A Rother Radio has benefitted the local community in several ways including the training and development of industry techniques to local individual’s who have become involved with the project. The company has been active within the community and has attended a number of local charitable events and assisted with raising money for a local water safety charity event as well as raising awareness surrounding water safety. Having a presence within the local community at events has allowed local individuals to broadcast from outside in a live environment in front of a live audience, increasing our members mental wellbeing, confidence and self-esteem. The company has also visited a number of schools within Rotherham to broadcast and deliver messages to the local community about the student’s projects, such as their BBC Children in Need Fundraising events. We have also attended and broadcasted information regarding local School Academy and Partnerships to showcase their talent. The feedback from school has been that of an increase in the mental wellbeing and moral of local young people. During the year 2023 period, Rother Radio also became allies and partners with Rotherham Pride to not only delivery messages of support for the LGBTQ+ community, but also to raise awareness surrounding the support available from local organisations. The hope is to broadcast the main event day live from All Saints Square in Rotherham in the Summer of 2024.

Consultation with stakeholders

Rotherham Broadcasting CIC offers a locally based service on DAB Digital Radio, its main stakeholders are members of the target community, as well as input from its volunteers. The station continues to benefit the local community and its volunteers and is open to all feedback and has an ‘open door’, equal opportunities policy. Rother Radio has an emphasis on providing relevant community information such as news, events and any other messages that may be of benefit to the local community. The station’s volunteers have regular meetings and discussions with management to enable them to offer any feedback that may help and improve the service in which we operate. Members of the community can provide feedback in a variety of ways which we clearly display on our website and can offer any feedback they have or anything else they may like to see improved. We have regular discussions with local charities and businesses and help to support these by providing relevant information. Rother Radio continues to support charities such as Sam’s Army’s Mission 1 Life, a charity that raises awareness of water safety for young people across South Yorkshire and attended an outside broadcast to help raise vital funds for waterside life saving equipment and to increase awareness of the dangers of swimming in open water. Rother Radio has also included interviews with local schools with local projects and fundraising activities such as Children In Need. Rother Radio has also started a partnership with Rotherham Pride and its committee in helping bring “Pride” back to Rotherham in support of the LGBTQ+ community. It is Rother Radio’s aim to broadcast the main event live from All Saint’s Square in Rotherham in the summer of 2024 in support of this. The company has also launched a new ‘Community Action’ scheme where not-for-profit entities in the area can send information to Rother Radio via the website and the station will advertise and cover the event or activity for free to listeners. Rother Radio also attended a number of local events to allow it’s members to participate in the delivery of local live radio from locations such as ‘Brinsworth Playing Fields’ for the Parish Council’s annual Gala.
