COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

BLAGSAEY ARTS CIC

Company Number: 13024308 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 5 April 2024

Company activities and impact

Blagsaey Arts CIC delivered many community arts events, trails and workshops between April 2023 and March 2024. This year in April we made paper chicken and chicks and placed them around Blagdon village with ‘why did the chicken cross the road?’ jokes on them as a trail to celebrate spring and make people smile. In April we worked with the Mendip Hills AONB to make willow skylarks and hang them in the fields where the skylarks were nesting to raise awareness with local people walking in those spaces. In May we provided an arts stall for people to colour in jokes and make their own. In the summer we collected poems from local people and in July we displayed one in giant letters and then offered a trail of QR codes attached to posts etc around the village which linked to other poems. We provided lantern-making workshops at Valley Fest and Vintage Nostalgia, offering 3D art to many families and a parade on the Saturday evening. During the year we provided three open workshops in the Village Club to local people to come and try new crafts including macrame, paper folding and tissue flowers. The tissue flowers were used in the Dia de Muertos display where we put up a large tissue flower heart and memories of local people who have passed away on the cemetery gates. In January we led the Blagdon Orchard Wassail, the traditional ceremony to encourage good apple crops, which has been held in Blagdon for many years but which we have now been given to organise. We provided workshops in Lantern making in February to the local primary schools, scouting groups and the WI as well as an open-access drop-in workshop for anyone. These sessions led up to the parade on 2nd March with the theme of Toys and Games which had hundreds of local families attending. In the February school holidays we put up a game of Blagdopoly as a fun trail around the village where people could find the street signs and relate them to the monopoly board. All these events were free and open to anyone to attend and always offered the chance to be creative.

Consultation with stakeholders

Blagsaey Arts CIC regularly consult with local people as the 3 directors live in Blagdon and discuss possible events, workshops and trails with people living there. We talk to local people at all the events asking what they would like to see and we promote our workshops and event through other local groups such as the scouting groups, the village club and the multi sports group. We discuss with the children at the local schools what lanterns they would make before their workshops. We chat to the WI and offer them workshops which they enjoy as well as encouraging them to make a lantern for the village parade. We talk to the parish council so they are aware of what will be delivered and can offer their opinion and also their permission when needed for using certain village spaces.
