COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

SUSSEX ART PROJECTS CIC

Company Number: 14785834 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 30 April 2024

Company activities and impact

The CIC seeks to benefit residents of the Newhaven and wider community by giving them the opportunity to view high quality contemporary art exhibitions and events. During the financial year 2023 to 2024, the CIC carried out the following: Border: After Ravilious exhibition was held between September and November 2023 at the Marine Workshops in Newhaven. The exhibition responded to Newhaven’s unique industrial and maritime landscape: to the port as a border, overlooked by the Fort at Castle Hill, with its ancient history as a site of defence. Focussing on the harbour and spanning into the surrounding tracks and chalk paths of the downs (Glynde, Firle, Cuckmere) to uncover, beyond simple landscape or history-based topographical recording, the landscapes stories, memories, traces and sound. Walk Talk Look walking workshop was held in September 2023. The trail from Newhaven Fort to Newhaven Port included Ravilious views and Towner contemporary artist billboards, taking a sideways look at Newhaven through the eyes of artists and writers. Newhaven Connected examined the sense of place of the Sussex landscapes of WWII-artist Eric Ravilious, by interweaving stories, folklore and intuition into a large-scale full-colour map. The CIC’s activities have benefited the community in the following ways: General public visited and enjoyed these free exhibitions and events. As the art was selected from the local area, the community had a unique opportunity to participate in and support the local artistic community, which in turn strengthens community spirit amongst the inhabitants as a whole. Marine Workshops (which was an underused industrial and marginal building) housed the exhibitions and events in an environmentally responsible manner. The exhibitions and events increased footfall by public transport to the local area which benefited local businesses. Marketing, and the exhibitions and events themselves enhanced the perception of Newhaven amongst the general public.

Consultation with stakeholders

The CIC’s stakeholders are the residents of Newhaven and wider community. The artists will usually be present during the exhibitions and events to inform and engage with visitors. We are also active on Instagram and YouTube in seeking comments. We often receive informative feedback as to the quality of the art. We also try to respond to comments made by visitors as regards accessibility of exhibitions and events. We proactively consult with Lewes District Council, Towner (public art gallery) and local community groups as regards content and format of the exhibitions and events.
