COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

FRINGE OF COLOUR CIC

Company Number: SC696924 (Scotland)

Year Ending: 30 April 2024

Company activities and impact

The company runs Fringe of Colour CIC, an arts project supporting Black people and People of Colour at arts festivals in Scotland and beyond. During the financial year 2023 – 2024, the company has benefitted the community in the following way: - Produced a week-long hybrid arts festival “Fringe of Colour Films” in Edinburgh at local community venue Summerhall, and online at www.fringeofcolour.co.uk. - Assisted a Scotland-based artist with production, to make a new film titled “Black Gold” (Ashanti Harris, 2023), which premiered at the festival in June 2023. - Ensured that every film in our festival programme was available with captions, BSL and audio descriptions. - Published new writing on our online publication platform, Fringe of Colour Responses. - Produced new podcast episodes accompanying the festival programme, from interviews with programmed filmmakers. - Provided BSL interpretation for all live events at the festival, working with local Interpreters of Colour where possible. - Provided performance and speaking opportunities to local Artists of Colour, including poets, arts practitioners, and local activists. - Provided free passes for festival attendees who needed them (36% of total festival passes). - Collaborated with local companies and organisations on community events, such as a community lunch, book stalls, and child care.

Consultation with stakeholders

The company’s stakeholders are our festival attendees, local artists, international artists, festival contributors, and Scottish funding bodies – Creative Scotland, Screen Scotland, and Film Hub Scotland. Our funders received detailed Project Logs and reports after the festival ended, including information on attendees, how the project was executed, areas for improvement, and the project budget and expenditure. Festival attendees, artists, and contributors received regular updates and reviews, and were encouraged to provide feedback on their experiences, to be implemented into the company’s future work. We collected this information through anonymous in-person and digital questionnaires. Our research enabled us to identify which elements of the festival were most appreciated and what we should work on in future years (e.g., changes to programming, ease of communication, online festival navigation). We consider Fringe of Colour Films 2023 a pilot year for the festival in its hybrid format, and will use what we have learnt to develop our work further with future events and practices.

Directors' remuneration

The director managed the Fringe of Colour festival, Fringe of Colour Films, and the related company projects. The director was paid £11,250 for consultancy fees for these services, no remuneration was received for director services.
