The company exists to serve the people and wildlife local to Rodney Road Playing Field in BS15, Bristol and its immediate surrounding area. The financial year 2023-24 was its inaugural year, and the CIC’s activities have been beneficial in the following ways: The CIC was successful in securing multi-year project funding from the West of England Combined Authority (WECA) as part of their Pollinator Fund, created to support community-led ecology projects that enhance biodiversity and pollinator habitats across the West of England region. Project activity funded by WECA in 23-24 included the planting of over 30k flowering bulbs, sowing meadow seed, planting 230 hedgerow and woodland whips and 7 young trees. The CIC Directors were the main point of contact for managing Community Interest Levy funds relating to the field, held in Bristol City Council accounts. The CIC engaged over 30 local volunteers and local councillors with regular planting activities and litter picks in Rodney Road Playing Field. Two local volunteers completed Health and Safety training with Bristol City Council Parks team, to support local planting sessions and future activities. The CIC Directors worked with Bristol City Council Parks team and the council’s Landscape Architect to create a concept design for the field, which was used as a basis for public consultation.
The company’s stakeholders are residents local to Rodney Road Playing Field, as well as relevant wildlife interest groups and public bodies. The Directors of the CIC each live on an adjacent road to Rodney Road Playing Field and created the company in response to their own experience of living in the area and of wanting to improve the green space for the benefit of people and wildlife. The CIC consulted with an ecologist from Avon Valley Wildlife Trust to gain specialist advice about Rodney Road Playing Field and worked alongside stakeholders from Bristol City Council (BCC) – specifically the Parks team and the BCC Ecologist. This involved site visits as well as email consultation, and as a result BCC created a Concept Plan the CIC used to base future consultation and activity planning on. An online and in-person residents’ consultation was delivered in September 2023 using paper surveys and an online survey tool. CIC Directors and volunteers gave local people the opportunity to view concept plans for improvements to the playing field and asked for feedback. Over 500 leaflets were delivered to local houses with information about the consultation, posters were put up in local businesses and there were posts in local Facebook groups. 50 people responded to the final survey, with the overwhelming majority of those that responded positive about the proposed planting (flowering bulbs, wildflower meadow, trees). Other elements, such as natural play equipment and an accessible path, also had a positive response. Proposals for a new entrance on Freshland Way prompted comments from a vocal minority of concerned residents, who were not in favour. The decision was made to not take this part of the plan forward for the time being. The results of this survey and consultation were shared publicly in October 2023, and the results of the survey are available for anyone to view online via a shared link. The Directors of the CIC manage project activity alongside a core group of 10 volunteers, with which they are in regular contact and consultation. There are also 20 local people in a WhatsApp group and over 250 followers in a Friends of Rodney Road Facebook group, who are regularly updated and consulted with plans or activities.
