Basis of preparing the financial statements |
Investments |
Listed investments are stated at cost. The market value of listed investments is shown by way of a note. |
Tangible fixed assets |
Land and buildings previously classified as investment properties held at cost have been transferred to tangible fixed assets as a reliable measure of fair value is not available without undue cost or effort. |
The directors consider that no useful purpose would be served in incurring the considerable expenses involved in an independent professional valuation. They are of the opinion that the market value of the portfolio exceeds the total book value at the balance sheet date and thus no depreciation has been provided. |
Taxation |
Taxation for the year comprises current and deferred tax. Tax is recognised in the Income Statement, except to the extent that it relates to items recognised in other comprehensive income or directly in equity. |
Current or deferred taxation assets and liabilities are not discounted. |
Current tax is recognised at the amount of tax payable using the tax rates and laws that have been enacted or substantively enacted by the balance sheet date. |
Deferred tax |
Deferred tax is recognised in respect of all timing differences that have originated but not reversed at the balance sheet date. |
Timing differences arise from the inclusion of income and expenses in tax assessments in periods different from those in which they are recognised in financial statements. Deferred tax is measured using tax rates and laws that have been enacted or substantively enacted by the year end and that are expected to apply to the reversal of the timing difference. |
Unrelieved tax losses and other deferred tax assets are recognised only to the extent that it is probable that they will be recovered against the reversal of deferred tax liabilities or other future taxable profits. |
Investment income |
Dividend income and bank interest are accounted for when received. |
Turnover |
Income from properties is accounted for on a receivable basis after making provision for bad debts. |
Grant income |
Grants of a revenue nature are credited to income in the period to which they relate. |
Going concern |
The company's financial statements for the year ended 30 April 2024 have been prepared on a going concern basis as, after making appropriate enquiries, the directors have a reasonable expectation that the company has adequate resources to continue in operational existence for the foreseeable future. |
