Curious Ear runs concerts and workshops focused on improvise and experimental music in Manchester. In this reporting period we have organised 20 concerts presenting work from local musicians and visiting touring artists from the UK, Italy, Germany, the USA, Canada, Norway, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Lithuania, Iraq, Denmark, Portugal and Japan. This represents fantastic opportunities for the public and musical communities we work with to experience world class performances in Manchester. 6 of these concerts were part of an Arts Council England grant funded project "relaxed gigs at St. Margaret's Church" which aimed to present experimental music in an accessible way in the afternoons to families, children alongside our usual audience. These concert days offered freelance employment to 7 team members on the day as well as paid work to the visiting artists. We also organised one concert of our improvisers orchestra, an open format everyone was welcome gig which attracted over 40 local musicians.
Attendees to the St. Margaret's relaxed gigs were consulted with and we received feedback indicating that this is a popular format with both audience and musicians, Feedback also indicated that there is still wide scope for a more traditional evening club gig as well so we will continue to programme both these formats. We also had positive responses from those involved with the improvisers orchestra so this is another area we would like to continue to develop.
