During the financial year 2023-2024, the focus of the Bonsai Foundation was in establishing clear collaboration guidelines, outreach and dissemination: With support from NeuroGEARS Ltd, the Bonsai Foundation published the official Contributor License Agreement (CLA) and contribution policies for all open-source repositories. In collaboration with NeuroGEARS Ltd, the Champalimaud Foundation and Open Ephys production site, we promoted the Bonsai Foundation’s activities by manning a booth at the Society for Neuroscience 2023 conference. In collaboration with the Gatsby Computational Neuroscience Unit, we started preparations to organize the first Bonsai Developer Conference before the end of 2024.
The company’s stakeholders are the community of users of the Bonsai programming language, and the open-source developers who contribute packages to the language. In the financial year 2023-2024 we focused our consultation efforts on getting feedback from developers on the draft contribution policies. During this time, we received several letters of interest both from existing and new open-source project maintainers, who were interested in contributing their projects to the Bonsai Foundation, and in receiving back support and guidance in how to improve their development practices. In response to this interest, we published the final contribution policies and expanded the number of contributors to our open-source projects. The participation of the Bonsai Foundation at the Society for Neuroscience 2023 conference was also very well received and allowed us to further gauge the interest of the community in contributing to the efforts of the CIC. Feedback was very encouraging, and specifically we gathered interest from key stakeholders at the Allen Institute and HHMI Janelia in creating a public development roadmap shared across the different institutions involved in the development of the Bonsai ecosystem. Furthermore, we received very positive feedback about our decision to host the Harp project at the Bonsai Foundation booth during the Society for Neuroscience 2023. This provided strong support for our plans to repeat the same booth organisation at the Society for Neuroscience 2024 event. Inquiring with our current partners we were able to confirm their availability to contribute resources and manpower to organise the booth next year.
