Notes to the Financial Statements

for the Period Ended 31 May 2024

  • 1. Accounting policies

    Basis of measurement and preparation

These financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the provisions of Section 1A (Small Entities) of Financial Reporting Standard 102

    Turnover policy

Turnover is measured at the fair value of the consideration received or receivable, net of discounts and value added taxes. Turnover includes revenue earned from the sale of goods and from the rendering of services. Turnover from the sale of goods is recognised when the significant risks and rewards of ownership of the goods have transferred to the buyer. Turnover from the rendering of services is recognised by reference to the stage of completion of the contract. The stage of completion of a contract is measured by comparing the costs incurred for work performed to date to the total estimated contract costs.

    Other accounting policies

Short term creditors are measured at transaction price (which is usually the invoice price). Loans and other financial liabilities are initially recognised at transaction price net of any transaction costs and subsequently measured at amortised cost determined using the effective interest method.

COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

THE SOCIAL CINEMA LONDON CIC

Company Number: 13407510 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 31 May 2024

Company activities and impact

In the financial year 2023/24 The Social Cinema produced an outdoor game called Stowaway that engaged the local community in Walthamstow and a number of small independent businesses. The game was based on interactive storytelling and had a structure similar to a treasure hunt or an escape room and engaged players on themes such as climate change and plant diversity. The project was enriched by side events such as a workshop led by medical herbalist Rasheeqa Ahmad and offered for free to local youth group Blackhorse Responders. We also collaborated with local college Big Creative Education to involve the students in a creative collaboration where they were asked to design characters and settings inspired by the game's sci-fi/dystopian setting. The project ended with a closing event at Switchboard Studios where we offered two different workshops – one led again by Rasheeqa Ahmad and one led by artist Rachel Jacobs – a screening (involving a short film by artist Taey Iohe and local grower Chris Chipatiso) and a panel discussion. In December 2023 and March 2024 we collaborated with CIC The Together Space, an organisation that offers events for children with disabilities which are also open to children without disabilities in order to foster community and tackle segregation against families with children with disabilities. In December we produced a light show for neurodivergent and SEND children that could replace the seasonal fireworks, while keeping noise levels down; in March we produced a screening and sensory workshop event designed for SEND children, where everything – from the animated short films programme to the workshop and the space set up – was designed for children with disabilities.

Consultation with stakeholders

The Social Cinema's stakeholders are families and local residents in Waltham Forest. In the past financial year we have delivered events primarily aim at young audiences in the local area, with a special focus on young people with disabilities towards the end of the year. Our game Stowaway was a 16 day-long event which was offered for free to the local community. This project also required the collaboration of a number of small businesses in the area and contributed to increasing the footfall of visitors and hopefully impacted positively on their business. We have also collaborated with local artists and practitioners; these collaborations were compensated fairly and also brought more visibility to the artists involved. All participants to our game Stowaway were encourage to give us feedback in the form of an online questionnaire. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with many responders hoping for us to repeat the event in the future. We also received some feedback on accessibility that we have taken on board. The screening we run in March was also followed by a consultation which returned a very positive feedback.

Directors' remuneration

Director Benedict Goodwin was paid £750 in the year. There were no other transactions or arrangements in connection with the remuneration of directors, or compensation for director’s loss of office, which require disclosure.

Transfer of assets

No transfer of assets other than for full consideration
