Bournethisway (BTW) is the only LGBTQ+ Parents Support Group (CIC) of its kind in the country. BTW provides regular health and wellbeing activities and meet ups for this community. BTW is shaped around the 5 steps to well-being, connecting, giving back, keep active, take notice and keep learning. Some of the well-being activities we provide are as follow; well-being coaching, counselling, PT sessions, soft plays, swimming, camping, farm visits, nature walks, yoga, mindfulness courses and lots more. Stonewall found that 36% of respondents who had children experienced barriers or challenges when starting their family. One in five of those stated that the greatest barrier or challenge was the high cost of private fertility treatment. Currently, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines state that funded access to IVF in England is only available to women ‘who have not conceived after two years of regular unprotected intercourse or 12 cycles of artificial insemination (where six or more are by intrauterine insemination)’. Some of the families that join BTW are in thousands of pounds worth of debt through paying for treatment but heterosexual couples receive three lots of IVF free with our community facing yet another inequality. This has a negative impact on the communities mental health and can become very stressful emotionally and financially time. BTW provides a non-judgmental, safe place where people can be themselves without being questioned about their family set up. Peer to peer support naturally unfolds and all the meet ups are geared around the members needs. BTW carries out regular evaluations ensuring we are delivering effective support. Some feedback we have received from our members are as follows: -‘BTW has helped us connect with other families like us and we don’t feel as alone.’ -‘BTW has been a lifeline for us and without the regular meet ups, we would be lost.’ -‘We travel from hastings to attend some of the meet ups, as there is nothing like this is our area yet. Its been such a positive experience, the meet ups are really relaxed and easy-going and its a joy to see our child playing with other with a similar family set up.’ -‘Our midwife sign posted us to BTW and going through the process of having a child is a minefield, to pick peoples brains and feel safe to have these discussions openly has helped us massively to start our own family. -‘BTW has helped with my mental health and well-being with the PT sessions that they set up, after experiencing postnatal depression it really helped me get through. Connecting with my tribe regular also was a great support.’ BTW also offers consultations and talks on how to make your business, community group, educational settings or organisations more LGBTQ+ inclusive. We work in partnership with several organisations including the NHS, maternity services, perinatal mental health teams, local Prides, Sussex Police and East Sussex County Council.
No formal consultations were undertaken with stakeholders within this financial year. Throughout the year, we informally engaged with our stakeholders and representatives from local community groups on regular intervals.
The aggregate amount of emoluments paid to or receivable by directors in respect of qualifying services was £8,500. There were no other transactions or arrangements in connection with the remuneration of directors, or compensation for director’s loss of office, which require to be disclosed.
No transfer of assets other than for full consideration
