Chiltern Voice operates a broadcast radio service with an Ofcom community licence, broadcasting on 107.4FM to Amersham, Chesham and the surrounding towns and villages of the Chilterns. We operate as a not-for-profit, with all station members being unpaid volunteers. Currently we are not even able to pay out-of-pocket expenses, though this is an aspiration when finances improve. We converted to a CIC from a Limited Company in January 2023 (mid-way through our 2022-23 financial reporting period); thus, this our first full year operating as a CIC. In addition to our existing team of volunteers, we have attracted thirty local people who are in various stages of training to become local radio presenters. We have launched a “Charity of the Month” initiative, starting in April 2023, providing free advertising for the featured charity, as well as featuring them in interviews on-air and also on our web site; (https://www.chilternvoice.fm/charity-of-the-month) and have featured eleven organisation during the period as well as having a strong pipeline of charities wanting to be featured. We provide hyper-local advertising for small and medium size local businesses who could not afford or justify advertising to a regional audience, at a cost that is cheaper than any other local commercial advertising medium. Though, even at these prices, given the current financial outlook for many businesses, it is proving hard to attract advertising or sponsorship. We have supported a wide range of community events, both in publicing that event with local “what’s on” as well as interviews of the event organisers and also interviews live from the events themselves, thus ensuring that local people are aware of local events. We have enhanced our website to allow Local Events, Organisations, Local Information, Services, Young People & Volunteering to submit information which will both populate our web site (as the focal point for anything we mention on-air) but will also deliver a precis for presenters to read out on-air. Finally, we are working with the local community and local government initiatives to better identify areas we can both support and partner with going forwards.
Our stakeholders are the people of the Chiltens who listen, or who are prospective listeners to Chiltern Voice. In addition we are reliant on the support of the local councillors and other officials both for support and feedback. We receive ongoing feedback from our members, who are local, at open meetings to discuss programming, fundraising and other community outreach initiatives. We rely on feedback from the various posts on Facebook (both our’s and also the community groups that we feature, and people from organisations that we interview) to provide “grass roots” feedback. Following our first “drinks and nibbles” open house at the end of 2023 where we met and discussed how Chiltern Voice could help to support community events, we were awarded a grant jointly by three Bucks Community Boards (Amersham, Chesham and Great Missenden) to enable us to purchase a set of equipment to take the station out into the community, and provide support for community events. This included key items such as a large PA system, Mixers and Microphones, computers for remote broadcasting (as well as the virtual Studio 3), internet links and the big green (CV branded) gazebo. This has enabled the Chiltern Voice team to commit to supporting fifteen major community events through the forthcoming year. Finally, we receive direct feedback from the general public through our interaction with them at outside broadcasts and other community events. Most recently we did our second - eleven hours of live outside broadcasting at the large Tesco’s superstore enabling us to interact with a wide range of shoppers and gain their feedback.
