Recreation Road Allotments CIC Community Interest Annual Report For the year ended 30th April 2024 Company Activities and Impact The company runs Recreation Road Allotments at its site in Selby, North Yorkshire, and is responsible for the management of approximately 100 full and half plots. The aim of the company is to provide a site where residents of Selby and the surrounding area are able to pursue their interest in all sorts of gardening, but mainly with a view to growing vegetable produce. The site provides a place for individuals to enjoy and develop their skills with other like-minded people. The company was formed to allow the purchase of the land for the benefit of the local community, and continue the long tradition of allotment gardening on the site. By maintaining the availability of the allotments to the community we enable more people to experience the health benefits of gardening and being outdoors (increased physical activity, improved mental wellbeing, reduced social isolation, enjoyment of gardening and cultivation, access to affordable fruit and vegetables, enjoyment of wildlife and nature, learning, etc.) The reduction in food miles also has environmental benefits, helping in a small way to reduce pollution, and encourage organic food production. Our plot holders are local residents of all ages, abilities and backgrounds. We encourage tenants to engage socially and develop social bonds by taking part in plant swaps and local shows, as well as through general gardening based activities on site. The CIC provides a place for individuals to enjoy and develop their skills with other like-minded people, and a place for children to learn about food cultivation and nature. We continue to see an increased interest in growing your own produce and having an allotment. Our workable plots all have tenants and our waiting list is growing. Consultation with Stakeholders All allotment plot holders are members of the association and are able to vote on any matters considered at the AGM. Every member is invited to attend the AGM in person. The AGM is where the allotment Management Committee members are elected and approved, and where policy and rule changes submitted by members and other bodies are considered and voted on. Management Committee meetings are held on a regular basis, usually monthly, to ensure good management of the site and to discuss any items raised by plot holders. All stakeholders are able to attend any, or all, of the meetings to comment, advise and suggest on the direction of the company, so that we can improve their experience of being part of our community. They are also invited to submit feedback in the form of comments, suggestions, questions or complaints by email, and these will be discussed in the meeting. Additionally, Management Committee members make efforts to walk around plots and have conversations with members, regular newsletters are emailed to tenants during growing season, and we also have a website and Facebook page.
