As the financial year of 2024 draws to a close, Black Women In Engineering CIC (BWEng) extends its sincere gratitude to our vibrant community for their unwavering support. This year has been marked by impactful events and initiatives that have significantly benefited our community and advanced our mission to amplify the visibility and contributions of Black women in engineering. Below is a summary of our key activities and achievements during this period: End-of-Year Networking Event Under the theme “Staying Power,” this inspiring event featured a fireside chat with Louisa Augustine-Fraser, Bridges and Structures Manager, and was hosted by Tolu Osobu, Founder of the InSTEM blog and Management Consultant at Accenture. The evening served as a celebration of our collective achievements and a moment of reflection on our efforts to elevate the presence of Black women in the engineering field. We are deeply grateful to all who joined us for this empowering occasion. Professional Development Workshop With over 50 participants, this year’s workshop was a resounding success. The event featured a distinguished panel of Chartered Engineers from various professional institutions who shared invaluable insights. Additionally, the Chartership Hybrid Study Group provided essential guidance to members pursuing professional accreditation. We extend our heartfelt thanks to our panelists for their expertise and to all participants who took steps closer to achieving their professional goals. “Let’s Talk” Networking Events This series of discussions attracted over 180 registrants, including participants from overseas. Topics covered in these sessions included: - My First Job in the Industry - Talent Retention and Early Career Years - Burnout and Adaptive Resilience These sessions have been instrumental in empowering members of our community, offering critical insights as they navigate and thrive in their careers. Elevate-Her Programme The inaugural cohort of the Elevate-Her professional program saw 12 participants successfully complete the initiative. Designed to support women in the early stages of their engineering careers, this program has already demonstrated significant impact, and we eagerly anticipate its continued success. Engineering Outreach Programme 2024 In collaboration with the University of Ghana’s School of Engineering Sciences, we delivered the 2024 Engineering Outreach Programme to female engineering students across Ghana. Over 120 participants engaged in this four-day initiative, gaining technical skills and practical insights to address real-world engineering challenges. This program continues to inspire and equip the next generation of engineers. 2025 BWEng Calendar & Planner To support our community in staying organized and focused on their professional ambitions, we introduced the 2025 BWEng Calendar and Planner. Featuring the inspiring faces of Black women in engineering across diverse sectors, this limited-edition planner serves as both a practical tool and a source of empowerment. Through these activities, Black Women In Engineering CIC has made meaningful contributions to the community, fostering professional development, encouraging diversity in engineering, and inspiring the next generation of leaders in the field. We are proud of these accomplishments and remain committed to creating lasting impact in the years to come.
We have engaged in consultations with a broad range of stakeholders, including partner organizations, past and current participants, local community groups, board members, and BWEng volunteers. Feedback gathered from these consultations has been instrumental in enhancing the quality and impact of our initiatives. Specifically, we have utilized this input to secure more engaging and high-caliber speakers and professional contacts, refine our marketing strategies to better resonate with professionals in the engineering field, and design events that are more interactive and impactful for our audience. These improvements underscore our commitment to continuous growth and responsiveness to the needs of our community.
