The Music Man Project Kent/Medway CIC (MMP Kent) was established as a regional partner organisation of the Music Man Project UK to provide accessible opportunities for people in our local Kent/Medway communities with learning disabilities to come together to enjoy, learn, sing, play and perform music. Throughout the 2023-24 accounting period , MMP Kent has consistently offered a range of weekly music sessions, concert and events. These not only support and benefit our community but also showcase the talents and abilities of our musicians. This year's notable highlights include: Online sessions Now in their fourth year, our weekly zoom sessions remain popular, continuing to be values part of our week. Initially launched during lockdown, these sessions allow MNMP performers from across the UK to meet, sing, play and enjoy each other's company. They provide a fantastic opportunity to network and connect with other Music Man Project regions. It was especially wonderful in April to meet some of our regulars face-to-face when we all came together at the Royal Albert Hall. RAH 2024 Fundraising. In May 2023 we launched our year of fundraising, specifically to raise money to fund transport o get our students and supporters to London for our big concert at the Royal Albert Hall in April 2024. The fundraising began in style with a band night where we were fortunate to have a wonderful 2-piece band donate their services for a mere £50, in return we raised over £500 from the evening. During the year, we held several fundraising pop-up coffee shops, including a special one to commemorate the Kings Coronation with an array of red, white and blue themed cakes and treats; and summer tunes and treats at the end of the summer term. In October we hosted a fantastic Quiz Evening which was great fun and incredibly well attended. All events successfully raising money for the Royal Albert Hall. In addition to these fundraising efforts, some of our performers gave up their Saturday mornings to do a bucket collection at Tesco Grove Green in Maidstone (May 2023, March 2024) and in Asda, Pier Rad, Gillingham (November 2023). We are immensely grateful to them for giving up their time to further help us in raising essential funds for the project. We were very grateful to be selected by Medway Sunlight Rotary as one of their charitable causes for the year. We received generous donations following their 'Dragon Boat Festival' in May 2023 and from the Medway Concert Brass outdoor concert in August 2023, which was organised by them as a fundraiser for our project. Further donations were received from a musical collaboration between West Malling Community Choir and Invicta Jazz Orchestra, raising funds for MPP Kent (October 2023) and in February 2024, a generous donation of £900 was received from the union of Catholic Mothers. Thanks to the generosity and kindness of our wonderful supporters, we were able to fully fund 4 coaches, 4 minibuses and 2 wheelchair accessible vehicles to transport our students to the RAH rehearsals in Southend, and to the concert at the Royal Albert Hall. Kent Album Project - with Square Pegs Arts In May 2023, six of our students embarked on a 6-month collaborative song writing initiative organised by Square Peg Arts. This ambitious project brought together young autistic, learning disabled and neurodivergent people from across Kent in writing and recording an album of original songs representing each of the 13 districts. Our students were directly involved in writing and recording Track 11 (An Ever-Flowing River) which focusses on the Medway Towns. The album, along with the subsequent music video, was professionally recorded and produced, and the finished Album was launched in November 2023 at the Gulbenkian Theatre in Canterbury. Performances and workshops in the community Our performances and workshops in the community provide an invaluable platform for showcasing the talents of our performers, not only giving them the opportunity to shine, but also helping to demonstrate what people with (dis)abilities are able to achieve despite the challenges they face. We hope that this goes some way in challenging misconceptions and helping to break down barriers and challenge stereotypes. These are some of the community events that we took part in during this financial year: June 2023/April 2024: Thursday Club (a very popular, widely attended club for older people) St. Matthew's Community Centre July 2023: Summer Fayre at Burn Oak School July 2023: Let Loose - open-air concert, Gillingham High Street September 2023: Assembly at St. Thomas Catholic School October 2023: Performance for Catholic Mother's Union October 2023: Dorothy Kerin/Burrswood Trust event at St. Augustine's Church, Gillingham, bringing together local community groups. December 2023 - Christmas performance at St. Paul's Community Hub, Parkwood Enabled Church In August 2023, we launched the first of our 'Enabled Church' events in partnership with Gillingham Salvation Army. These sessions, scheduled to take place every two months on Saturdays from 11am-2pm, are advertised as 'Church for people with a learning disability' and provide an opportunity to explore the Christian faith through songs, crafts, games, quizzes, and Bible stories. Summer Concert 2023 The Summer Concert in July remains a real highlight of the year showcasing the extraordinary accomplishments of our Music Man Project musicians. The concerts, both in Medway and in Maidstone are testament not only to the transformative power of music, but the dedication of the tutors and the hard work and determination of the students to succeed regardless of the challenges they face. We are so proud of them all. Partnerships with university of Kent For the fourth year running, MMP Kent has continued to partner with Kent University again this year. In January MMP Kent Regional Director led a teaching seminar and workshop introducing students from Kent University to the work of the Music Man Project, prior to providing work placements during March for 10 undergraduates completing the Arts, Health, and Wellbeing Module part of their degree courses. Collaborative Christmas concerts This year, we were delighted to collaborate once again with the Salvation Army Maidstone Citadel Band, and the City of Rochester Symphony Orchestra for our Christmas concerts held in Maidstone and in Medway. Both concerts were well attended - in fact the Medway concert was sold out within a week of the tickets being released. We are grateful to the staff at the Glass Box Theatre, Mid-Kent College who waived the entire fee for the evening! Christmas dinner Following the success of last year's Christmas meal, we were looking forward to celebrating the end of term with a big Christmas Dinner. It was planned and brilliantly executed by two of our volunteers, and the table was set for 80 people (20 more than last year!) It was a great occasion. We even had a visit from Santa, and each of our performers was given the gift of a special 'Christmas edition' MMP Kent Teddy Bear. It was a wonderful way for performers from each of our groups to come together, and celebrating in this way was a great opportunity to strengthen the social aspect of our group, especially since we usually meet for rehearsals and performances where there is little time to foster meaningful connections and friendships beyond our musical pursuits. 'Cakes for Causes' cake sale In August we were invited to take part in the morning service at St. Matthew's Church, Wigmore (one of our rehearsal venues). Refreshments were served after the service and the congregation donated money in return for a cake. £200 was raised by the congregation and donated towards our project. African drumming workshop In October we had a visit from group of Ugandan Musicians who led a whole day of singing, dancing, drumming and music making. It was a lot of fun. They taught us some african songs, and we enjoyed exploring African rhythms and drumming patterns. We even got to dress up in grass skirts! The joy was tangible. We were really pleased to host them for the day, and they were delighted to each receive a MMP Kent Teddy Bear to take back to their families and community in Uganda. Thanks to St. Augustine's Church, Gillingham for helping to organize this. Royal Albert Hall 2024 Of course, the absolute highlight and climax of the year was the performance in April at the Royal Albert Hall. This concert was the culmination of almost 2 years' work, with around 300 Music Man Project students from across the UK taking part, accompanied by HM Band of the Royal Marines. There were over 80 Kent musicians (not including the on and off-stage carers that also attended all day). As a team we are so immensely proud of all our wonderful performers and for 2 of them to be given solos. It was also an honour for MMP Kent Regional Director to have two sons included in the show for which she had written the lyrics. Our primary aim this year has been to continue offering activities and accessible music opportunities for people with learning disabilities. By doing so, we aim to create a sense of belonging, foster community for those who are often socially excluded, and challenge misconceptions about the abilities of individuals with disabilities. We believe this service is essential for fostering a sense of identity and purpose, improving mental health and emotional well-being, and offering hope and fulfilment through achievement and recognition. We are so pleased to be part of such an incredible and inspiring project that helps to bring about a change in peoples perceptions of what people with a learning disability can achieve.
Our stakeholders are our service users (performers/musicians) and their families, local care agencies and learning disability day services, our directors, staff and committee, community centre and local church staff and The Music Man Project UK. Other stakeholders include individuals and organisations with whom we collaborate, or that have supported the project financially or musically during the past year. To fulfil our objectives and continue to improve and adapt our service to meet the needs of our service users, we maintain essential lines of communication with all those who have contributed to or used our service. Service Users (Performers) We use a variety of ways to communicate with our performers. As well as face-to-face contact at meetings and sessions, we correspond with several service users through social media channels such as WhatsApp, Messenger, Facebook and text. These methods were established during lockdown and have continued to prove invaluable this year. Details of sessions are relayed using newsletters and flyers. These are also posted on the social media channels mentioned above. Some of our performers need this information relayed to them verbally, so this is followed up by individual phone calls or facetime video calls. This ensures that all individuals are provided with the correct information and kept up to date with activities. This also provides opportunity for our performers to express their views and opinions regarding sessions and activities. Performers give feedback, make comments and check details during face-to-face and online sessions Care Agencies and Learning Disability Day Services. Many of our performers attend sessions as part of a day service, or with a personal assistant, carer or family member, it is vital therefore that we consult with these stakeholders to monitor and manage the effectiveness of our service provision. During lockdown we set up Music Man Project Kent WhatsApp and Messenger groups as a way of remaining in contact with families and keeping in touch with representatives from these key stakeholder groups. These have proved a great way to gain feedback and consult with partners and supporters. All stakeholders are on our mailing list. They receive regular bulletins and are kept up to date with information about MMP Kent's activities; including new performance opportunities, concerts, key dates, developments, news, and other ways to get involved. Directors, Staff and Committee Our directors, staff and representatives from key stakeholder groups (parent/carer; local community centre/church; community choir/partner organisation) form our Music Man Project Kent Committee. We hold quarterly meetings where minutes are taken and relevant topics on the agenda are discussed. Committee members take an active and keen interest in the running of MMP Kent, attending weekly sessions, and are in regular contact via email and have frequent telephone/face to face conversations. There is also weekly (if not daily) contact via WhatsApp. Community Centre and Church building staff We have strong links with several local churches and community centres and in particular St. Matthew's Church Community Centre, The Salvation Army Gillingham, and The Salvation Army Maidstone where we hold our weekly sessions. We consult with these local organisations through face-to-face meetings, on-site meetings, phone and email. In addition to meeting weekly at the Community Centre, St. Matthew's Church invited our musicians to participate in a Sunday service, and they have fundraised for us through their 'Cakes for Causes' initiative. This year, we further developed our relationship with Gillingham Salvation Army by partnering with them to establish 'Enabled Church' - the first of its kind in Kent! The Music Man Project Ltd. The Music Man Project Kent is a Regional Partner Organisation of the National Music Man Project Charity, working closely with the CEO, directors, and trustees. Sharing common goals and aims the two organisations work collaboratively to deliver high quality, accessible music education and performance opportunities for people with learning disabilities. MMP Kent Regional Director is also a director of the national charity and has attended three trustee meetings this year. She is also in weekly email or phone contact with the CEO. Other Stakeholders Third party stakeholders are included in the circulation of general newsletters and invited to attend MMP events and concerts. News is circulated by email and on social media. In doing so we aim to include not only those that currently benefit directly from our services, but also to further potential beneficiaries. News of activities is also conveyed in local media - The Net, and sometimes KMTV, BBC Radio Kent and Kent Online. Information is also shared on the MMP UK Facebook page and The Music Man Project website and YouTube channel. Performances, and talks to local community groups and organisations, such as Union Catholic Mothers, Parkwood Community Hub, Thursday Club, St. Thomas Catholic School, Burnt Oak School, and Kent University have also taken place this year, as well as several performances in the local and wider community. This helps to maximise the spread of information to a wider group of stakeholders and within the community we serve. Donors and charitable sources of support To keep our fees as low as possible for our beneficiaries, we rely heavily on donations and fundraising. During this accounting period we have had tremendous financial support from donors, namely, Kent Community Foundation [KCF], Barretts Charitable Fund, Medway Sunlight Rotary Club, Union Catholic Mothers, and other personal donors. Two stakeholder supporters (family members/friends of our musicians) have raised money for MMP Kent this year, one by donating his pocket money and the other following a death where money was donated to our project in their memory. We are extremely grateful for all donations and grants received. Consultations with grant funding bodies and donors have predominantly taken place this year by email, phone call and via online application forms. At the end of a particular period of funding, or where grants or donations are given, impact monitoring forms are completed, and post funding correspondence takes place demonstrating how funds have been spent.
