In the Financial Year 2023/24 Youngwilders worked on 10 Nature Recovery projects across England, a brief description of the work done and how these projects benefit the community are described below: 1. Maple Farm - Our flagship 40 Acre rewilding project on the Surrey/Sussex border. In 23/24 Youngwilders took down 1km of fencing, created log pile habitats and hibernaculum habitats, planted a small hedgerow on the north side of the site, and did some wetland suitability testing. All events were designed by and for local young people and were educational throughout. 2. Pounce Hall - A 20 Acre woodland creation and river restoration project in Essex. In 2023/24 we planted over 1000 trees, working with 58 young people in the process. This directly benefited the community by improving the natural environment in the local area and teaching young people about the value of biodiversity and the skills required to create woodland. 3. South Heath Farm - Youngwilders planted 700 native trees as part of 100m Hedgerow as part of a major volunteer effort of 13 young people. This project benefited the community by creating a new wildlife corridor in an area of intensive farmland, providing habitat and food for mammals and birds. We also used our volunteer day as an opportunity to teach young people about the value of wildlife corridors and the importance of restoring hedgerows around the country. 4. Greater Poston Farm - Here Youngwilders planted 1000 native trees as part of 250m Hedgerow in Shropshire as part of a major volunteer effort of 15 young people. This project benefited the community by creating a new wildlife corridor in an area of intensive farmland, providing habitat and food for mammals and birds. We also used our volunteer day as an opportunity to teach young people about the value of wildlife corridors and the importance of restoring hedgerows around the country. 5. YED NHM - The Young Entomologists Day event at Natural History Museum saw Youngwilders help organise an event for young people interested in teaching and learning about insects. 6. Resurgence Resurgence - Our biggest youth engagement activity of the year, a Youth Rewilding Summit held at the Knepp Estate. Here, 100 young environmentalists attended a one day event with guided tours of the rewilding area, talks by environmental experts, and workshops designed to engage young voices with the environmental conversation in the UK. 7. Tramway Farms - A 10 Acre project in Warwickshire. In 2023/24 Youngwilders worked with 3 young people to conduct an ecological baseline survey of the site. This benefited the community by ensuring that any ecological interventions are thoroughly planned and also taught young people green skills relating to site assessment. 8.Duncan Terrace Meadows - A 200m2 urban wildflower meadow creation project in London. In 2023/24 we worked with young designers and the council to refine our plans for a new wildflower meadow habitat and series of youth engagement efforts. This will be fully implemented in 2024/2025 9. Freshford Meadows - A 20 Acre project focused on grassland habitat across 4 sites in Freshford Village. In 2023/2024 Youngwilders secured funding for the project and delivered detailed ecological surveying and planning activities to improve the habitat across the sites. The project has benefited the community by improving the habitat (specifically for pollinators) and by teaching the young people involved about the processes involved in establishing and maintaining a wildflower meadow 10 The Grange Project - A 30 Acre project to rewild an area of improved grassland in Monmouthshire. In 2023/24 Youngwilders secured an agreement with the landowner to deliver a youth-led nature recovery project on the land. In 2024/25 Youngwilders will deliver a series of planning reports and will deliver major youth engagement activities.
The CIC's main stakeholders are young people aged 18-30 interested in environmental work. In 2023/2024 we worked in person with 313 young people across our projects. All of our projects seek to provide young people with practical experience in nature recovery work, a sense of community and well-being, an opportunity to feel more connected to nature and an opportunity to have real stake in direction of an active conservation project. We aim to make them fun, inclusive, and relaxed, where everyone learns from each other and collectively enriches the group experience. This is reflected in the extremely positive feedback we get from our volunteers. We also run a number of creative programmes and activities focused on further boosting youth involvement in the nature recovery movement. These include an internship programme, workshops, seminars, a zine, documentary work, social media outreach, and an annual youth rewilding summit held at the Knepp Estate. In September 2023 Youngwilders hosted the second annual edition of ‘Resurgence' - a Youth Rewilding Summit delivered in collaboration with the Knepp Wildland Foundation. Resurgence empowers young people through talks and walks and the 100 participants share their views in relation to Youngwilders, our work, and the nature sector more generally. The key demands of our community are speed of action to reverse ecological degradation and inclusivity and access to ensure everyone is welcome within natural spaces and environmental campaigns - we have used these main aims to steer the work of Youngwilders. We will host a repeat event in 2024 to again hear the views of the next generation of environmentalists and to ensure our work is still focused on the areas most valued by young people. After all our volunteer days, and after Resurgence, we undertake surveys and will continue to do so. To date we have recorded a 96% Average satisfaction with our volunteer days and 96% Average likelihood a young person will attend another event. We use social media to keep our community informed of our work and reach out to volunteers, we now have over 4000 followers on Instagram.
