SUMMARY LDC continued to deliver the online global monthlies, develop the YouTube Channel with edited videos of the online events, available at no cost to viewers after the events. This benefits the community by ensuring wide global accessibility for audience and artists, either to attend the online events live or to watch afterwards online. We continued to offer a mentoring programme for people working on their comics projects, adding extra people to our list of mentors from published experienced women artists. We continued developing two of the new strands of activity piloted in 2022: LDC Residencies in partnership with The Grange Projects, Norfolk, led by Nicola Streeten and Safe Space for Hard Stories an online group forum led by Wallis Eates. Both are further described below. There has been a legacy from the 2022-2023 British Council supported REVEAL! project collaborating with a partner organisation in Kenya. This included an invitation to the LDC committed to the Lakes International Comic Art Festival in September 2023 where we delivered a presentation about REVEAL! and Safe Space for Hard Stories. We also accepted invitations to present about REVEAL! for the British Council and to lead a workshop for the Wellcome Trust. Nicola was invited to keynote at a conference in Sweden where she spoke about the work of LDC. At our AGM in September 2023, board member Rachael Ball resigned and new board member Lana Le joined the board. Lana’s expertise is in graphic design and she has contributed to the social media publicity of LDC. Her interest is in piloting an LDC online fair to launch in 2025. LDC’s activity included the following strands: LDC ONLINE GLOBAL MONTHLIES LED BY ALL COMMITTEE MEMBERS We hosted 6 online events, with three guests presenting their works at each one. These included invited guests from around the world including UK, Egypt, Kenya, Lebanon and Germany, offering a diversity of experiences to our community. The average attendance was 40-80 people at each one. Tickets could be booked at no charge or for a donation offering inclusivity. The online platform continues to offer accessibility to those unable to attend live events in the UK and globally. The gathering contributes to regular connection with our community and offers platforms to creators globally. We introduced four physical monthlies in London and Bristol. Two of the meetings were hosted at The Cartoon Museum, London, re-establishing our partnership with them. Together they included 11 speakers from UK, Kenya and Vietnam. YOUTUBE CHANNEL We edited and uploaded all presentations from our monthly events to our YouTube channel, supporting the reach of guest artists as well as enabling people who miss the live online event to access the presentations. LDC ONLINE MENTORING PROGRAMME LED BY EMMA BURLEIGH This continued to run as a popular offer of 4 online mentoring sessions with an artist from our list of published UK based women graphic novelists at a fixed cost of £220. This benefits artists by providing work as well as offering a unique support service to people working on comics projects. It was agreed at our AGM in September 2023 to increase the cost to £250 from November 2023. From 1 May 23 to 30 April 24 we had 7 mentees, working with 5 different mentors each on a programme of 4 sessions. Since November 2023 we’ve been charging £250 basic rate to mentees, and £270 ‘supporter rate’. One person so far has selected supporter rate. LDC RESIDENCIES IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE GRANGE PROJECTS, NORFOLK, LET BY NICOLA STREETEN We changed the nature of the offer in line with The Grange Projects to offer the residencies on a pay-what-you-can basis. Places were offered for a week at a time to the LDC community from May 2023 to September 2023 and were successfully taken up by 19 artists. In addition Nicola ran a weekend structured residency offered exclusively to LDC community at a fixed price (subsidised by The Grange). This took place for 6 artists. The maximum number of residents that can be hosted at The Grange is 6. The intention is to host critical engagement in a social convivial space, develop generosity and reciprocity in a peaceful rural location. SAFE SPACE FOR HARD STORIES, an online group forum led by Wallis Eates, 1 May 2023 - 30 April 2024 Safe Space for Hard Stories is born from Wallis’ experience of sharing raw material, and then her inner and outer journeys that subsequently unfolded. The vision is to create a buffer between the creative space of immersion and exploration, and the public platform. It was piloted as a participatory space that is held by those that attend with mutual trust and confidentiality. Stories were shared and heard with interrogation into the ‘why’ of sharing a story and the ‘why’ of publishing -- where do they meet, and where do we each sit on that crossover? The aim is to provide support in whichever direction feels right. Safe Space for Hard Stories has continued to run once a month, taking on a total of 17 participants who completed their block of 6 sessions, including 8 who went on to renew for another block of 6. The joining process changed from induction participation to 1to1 consultations prior to joining the group. During the consultations, prospective members have the opportunity to ask Wallis questions, while Wallis in turn learns more about their projects and what they wish to achieve by joining the group. They are shown the Agreement Form that they must sign if they want to join, and they are send a video link of a Keynote presentation introducing them to an indepth to the Safe Space for Hard Stories ethos. Feedback from participants who have left have been positive with 100% reporting reduced anxiety around their projects, and 100% reporting a clearer idea of what they want to do with their projects. EXTERNAL WORKSHOP DELIVERY LDC delivered one workshop externally, to employees of Wellcome Trust INTERNATIONAL PROJECT LEGACY British Council International Collaboration Award to Nicola Streeten LDC REVEAL! WOMEN'S COMICS EAST AFRICA -- UK: Dr Nicola Streeten led on LDC as successful recipient of British Council International Collaboration grant of £60,00 to work in partnership with Kymsnet Media Network, Kenya. The thematic remit was the intersection of gender and climate change. The grant was divided equally between partners. It has been the most ambitious and globally far-reaching project LDC has delivered to date. The intention was to benefit women on a global platform, and disseminate lesser heard stories.
The company directors are all women-identifying practitioners and therefore, themselves stakeholders. All consultation on LDC activity is conducted informally between us, and any external stakeholders are included in consultation where relevant to agree activity. External commissioning is done via open call and/or invitation with mutual agreement of all stakeholders, primarily the directors.
The total amount paid or receivable by directors in respect of qualifying services was £3,588. There were no other transactions or arrangements in connection with the remuneration of directors, or compensation for director’s loss of office, which require to be disclosed.
No transfer of assets other than for full consideration
