Lancaster Environment Action & Protection (LEAP) continues its community interest objective of taking forward grassroots action to change people’s habits and preferences to protect the planet and the sustainability of life on it. In this reporting year (May 2023-April 2024), we have completed researching, developing and delivering the full 32 week Environmental Course for Community organisations, partnering with Hindu Forum of Britain to reach out to its member organisations across the country to deliver fully funded Environmental Assessment and Management training as well as another full module on Climate Change Awareness. The programme is ready to be evaluated for its efficacy and impact, which will be completed in the next financial year. An Environmental Management and Climate Change Awareness Guidebook will also be developed in the next financial year and shared free of charge with all HFB member organisations for cascading down further. The environmental management toolkit developed for communities can be downloaded from https://www.lancashireleap.org.uk/training-webinar-on-the-leap-environmental-assessment-and-management-toolkit. The Environmental Management and Climate Change Awareness training was received with enthusiasm by the second set of participating organisations and we have already had feedback from a number of organisations who are at different phases of implementing environmental changes across their organisation using the toolkit. LEAP has been officially recognised for its contribution and guidance to these community organisations by Hindu Forum Britain (HFB) with a LEAP director invited to the National Executive Committee and representing Environmental strategy at the HFB Diwali at the House of Commons. This disseminates the information and learning further, leading to more impact by HFB member organisations (some of whom themselves have further numbers of branches across the UK). LEAP Directors have also been invited to contribute an article about environmental protection to the HFB’s annual Diwali magazine which is read by its 300+ member organisational representatives all across the UK. LEAP Directors were invited to the high level 2023 Diwali event at Parliament, to represent the environmental work being undertaken by HFB and its member organisations, and this prestigious invitation has continued into the 2024 Diwali at Parliament (in the next accounting period). This raised awareness of environmental management with over 120 organisational representatives, both members of HFB, other community organisations and local businesses as well as MPs and other political leads. LEAP Directors continually strive to make our work go the extra mile, on a voluntary basis. This stems from our belief that each person can make a difference to protecting our planet and future, by doing what they can in their daily lives to be sustainable and to share these practices and ideas as much as possible with as many as possible. We do this in many ways of engagement such as sharing our thoughts at webinars, as a voluntary activity by LEAP. For instance LEAP Directors were invited to participate as Speakers at the COP 28, using the online platform broadcast from the Rotary stall at Dubai, UAE. LEAP Directors were again invited by Healing Earth on World Environment Day to share the highlights of the LEAP Environmental Assessment & Management Toolkit. The toolkit was commended by the host for its versatility and free access from the LEAP website and received with great interest by other global participants. The impact has led to LEAP being again invited this year on World Environment Day. (The details of our talk and its impact this year will be shared in the next accounting period.) LEAP has been supporting its Voices of Youth members to develop Green Team engagement at Lancaster Royal Grammar School. This has involved developing an annual plan that will engage different age groups within school parameters, in sustainability initiatives. The plan has supported the Green Team at the school to launch its first Eco-Newsletter named ‘The New Leaf’. The newsletter has led to any children contributing articles, knowledge, activities and has been circulated throughout the school. The LEAP Voices of Youth’s far reaching Eco-Festival booklets for Diwali, Christmas, Passover and Eid, has been asked for again this year, being further shared by individuals and schools to promote economical and sustainable ways of celebrating festivals. LEAP’s vision is to continue to focus on activities locally, regionally and nationally, which have maximum impact at grassroots level in integrating sustainability in every aspect of daily life. LEAP’s mission continues to be to encourage communities to adopt a sustainable mindset.
Lancaster Environment Action & Protection (LEAP)’s stakeholders are all global citizens. In this accounting period, LEAP has participated in several international webinars including online at Rotary International’s COP 28 stall at Dubai, UAE; by Healing Earth on World Environment Day, engaging with stakeholders to share our environmental toolkit resource, good practices learnt from our environmental training participants and learning of sustainable practice world wide, building these into our development of activities. Our voluntary work during this accounting period involved local schools, their children and families, who we engaged with via the LEAP Voices of Youth whose members have been instrumental in developing their school’s Green Team and Eco-Newsletter. We have also engaged with a local authority, Preston City Council, sharing our knowledge at the Climate Jury. For the Environmental Management Training that we completed delivering for Hindu Forum Britain, our stakeholders are located all across the UK. Evaluation was carried out at the end of each of the 32 sessions and participating organisations have given very good feedback demonstrating not only learning from the course but also shared learning from each other, as well as through the course demonstrating where and how they are putting their knowledge to use in making their organisational activity and buildings more sustainable. We will be integrating the learnings from their feedback into the environmental management guidebook that will be shared free for greater use of this pathway to sustainability.
