Company activities and impact

Over 2023/2024 Speaking of Food CIC continued to support communities with food and nutrition centered activities and learning, promoting the ‘eat more of’ messages and demonstrating accessing nutrition from everyday foods. Two Housing Associations (HA) funded sessions for their tenants – one housed vulnerable adults with a lack of facilities and skills to cook for themselves. After the sessions a homemade noodle dish made with ‘storecupboard’ ingredients and microwaved baked potatoes with various nutritious toppings were added to their repertoire. The other HA invested Ageing Well funding into 6 sessions with 12 older people living independently, many finding cooking for one a chore and some also managing conditions such as T2 Diabetes. Information and tasters demonstrated the range of approaches that could be taken to make cooking for one less of a chore. Shop bought ‘convenience’ foods with ingredients the same as those used at home were tried and enjoyed. Comments included "this has transformed my food shopping and planning my meals”, “a whole new way to think about healthy eating for me”. The importance of nutrition and hydration training was provided to two groups of home carers. One group were providing a home care service in a new purpose built facility. Carers were invited by LA Care Sector training to learn about suggestions for active and nourished lifestyles to clients, especially with a view to preventing falls. During Nutrition and Hydration week in March informal and staff carers were invited to attend a workshop highlighting nutritious, quick and easy choices for both carers and those cared for. Speaking of Food CIC retained a seat on the Food Solutions Network Foundation group for a second year, helping to steer the combined efforts of local organisations to address food insecurity. We also moved into the Arts, Culture and Heritage space taking on a role of Lead Curator of Food during the refurbishment of Touchstones museum. With the reopening due autumn 2025 the Curators of Food are influencing the new direction as a food themed museum. The Curators hail heritage from S. Asia, E. Asia, Eastern Europe, Middle East, Africa, and the UK. In September 2023 Speaking of Food CIC was contracted for a year by the LA to co-ordinate the development of a local Food Partnership, with a view to joining the Sustainable Food Places Network hosted by Sustain/ Soil Association/ Food Matters. Tasks included drawing together a steering group, defining terms of reference and developing information for a place based application to join the SFP network in May 2024. Meetings of the Food Partnership steering group were held every 6 weeks and an action plan was drafted involving the six pillars of a sustainable food place. Various activities were co-ordinated including minute taking, mapping of assets, and an event for ‘home growers’ was held. Meeting the expected outcomes of the contract and achieving and amending actions is in progress at April 2024.

Consultation with stakeholders

Our stakeholders include those requesting to know about our services and those participating in activities. Consultation happens when finding out if we can deliver an activity the stakeholder requests, or, what we could deliver for their client. When working with clients we are keen to ensure that they get the most out of activities and when possible will adapt content to enhance knowledge, skills and/ or confidence on food and nutrition.
