Company activities and impact

BeMa Nutrition C.I.C. is a company comprised of two Registered Associate Nutritionists who deliver health promotion sessions to community groups in Manchester. During the financial year 2023-2024, we have benefitted the community in the following ways: Southway Housing Trust: older aged residents completed three blocks of weight management sessions on balanced eating, portion control and physical activity, resulting in positive weight changes for the average participant. Voice of BME Trafford: three separate cohorts of people from South Asian and African Caribbean backgrounds attended sessions at the Heart Friendly Club at Limelight Health and Wellbeing Hub where they learnt how to prevent chronic illnesses that are prevalent in their communities, such as type 2 diabetes, obesity and hypertension, through dietary and lifestyle changes. Diet Plans: we delivered one-to-one online dietary assessments. We kept this service affordable by providing three different plans with varying prices and offers. We used nutrition software to analyse a client’s food diary and provide dietary advice, with additional plans including behaviour change guidance, a tailor-made shopping list and meal plan. A testimonial we received from one client explained how his energy levels improved after following dietary recommendations given to him in response to low vitamin B12 levels found in his diet.

Consultation with stakeholders

Our company’s stakeholders are Southway Housing Trust, Voice of BME Trafford, and all participants who attended the sessions we delivered as health practitioners. We built a strong rapport with these organisations through prior work experience and have become attuned to the needs of the community members we facilitate. At the end of each block of sessions, we asked participants to complete a short questionnaire to provide feedback on the language, content, and relevance of the information covered. For example, participants at our Heart Friendly Club sessions requested healthy eating guidelines which incorporate foods specific to their cultural background. In response to this, we provided South Asian and African Caribbean Eatwell Guides which include a larger variety of culturally appropriate foods. Engagement levels increased and we had positive feedback from community members.
