Deptford cinema is a not-for-profit community led project that wants to provide a dedicated cinema to the Borough of Lewisham, being the oldest operating cinema in Lewisham. The cinema was founded to provide affordable access to cultural events, with an emphasis of film screenings. The cinema is run by a diverse volunteer body, including many local residents. To ensure accessibility we launched a ‘Pay what you can’ program for students, pensioners, unemployed among others. Our cinema tickets are priced at lower than average cinema tickets in London.
Our weekly meetings are the main method of engaging with and responding to stakeholders. We hold regular weekly meetings with the aim to introduce the cinema to new volunteers and to discuss issues related to the running of the cinema with regular volunteers. Decisions about day-to-day operations or long-term planning are made at these meetings. All meetings are documented, distributed and archived for all volunteers to access. These meetings are open to everybody and publicly advertised on social media, the cinema’s website and leaflets. In addition to public face to face meetings the cinema also makes extensive use of social media and mailing lists to communicate and consult with stakeholders. We have internal mailing lists which we use for internal communications with programmers and volunteers. For in-depth discussions and decisions, we also use online discussion forums to discuss running of the cinema.
