Wellies Farm and Garden in Newport, South Wales, exists to provide a safe environment where people with learning difficulties and mental health problems can enjoy the countryside and experience working with animals, as well as growing vegetables. Recently we’ve seen children with behavioural problems and mental health hospital patients visiting and reporting huge benefits. Our goal is to continue to improve our facilities including purchasing our own defibrillator, putting a disabled lift on the minibus and continuing to invest in staff training. Training has continued this year to ensure everyone involved is qualified. When at the farm, visitors immerse themselves into farming life, interacting with and caring for the animals and taking part in many different farming and gardening activities such as animal interaction, arts and crafts, gardening/horticulture, mechanics, and driver training for agricultural and construction machinery. During the year we held our Christmas Santa’s Grotto event and Easter egg hunt event as well as holding numerous work experience sessions assisting social services, local council, local schools and local individuals who can benefit from our nurturing and therapeutic environment. We are working more with social services and the Disabled children's team where we have learners access Wellies on a daily basis each week to work with the animals, complete plant training, horticulture, and lots more. We have continued to work with a local Autistic charity called Ready Steady Go and they access the farm twice a month. They get to meet the animals, complete art and craft as well as complete forest school activities. We have local scout groups visit so they can complete their badges with us. During the year we attended the Usk Show where we promoted Wellies to all different LEAs. Our activities have benefitted the community by providing a safe and friendly environment where we can support our visitors to increase their confidence, self-worth, personal and social skills. Specifically we have worked with Newport City Council, Monmouthshire County Council , local primary schools, local mental health support services and many more. The attendees of our work experience sessions and therapeutic sessions benefit and we have had great feedback to say what a difference it makes to their lives.
The company’s stakeholders are residents of and visitors to the farm, including special schools, local charities, local government as well as the general public in and around Newport. The animals that live at the farm enjoy a safe and friendly space to roam and can enjoy their natural behaviours by not being kept in cages or small spaces. We consult with the organisations we work with to ensure we can provide the services that are needed and where there is a gap in the market. We aim to fill that by providing a suitable location with friendly animals and skilled, experienced staff to enable those in the South Wales area to have access to a hands on experience. We always ask for feedback from visitors and take any comments on board to improve and continue to grow. We have received great feedback about our organisation and continue to grow our following.
