OKRA STUDIO CIC

Year Ending: 30 April 2024

Company activities and impact

Okra continued supporting the Sunnyside Rural Trust, a charity and social enterprise based in Hertfordshire offering training and work experience for 150 vulnerable people. They train people with learning disabilities to acquire skills in a number of rural activities including Horticulture and plant propagation. Okra continued to provide architectural services in the planning and design of a propagation centre with Green house and Potting shed/ ‘Mess Room’. The new centre will provide a valuable resource to the charity and will enable further expansion of its worthy cause within Hertfordshire. Okra has continued its work in education and public outreach, leading educational walking and cycling tours of London for Open City. In April 2024, Okra launched a new tour telling the story of the history of social housing, from almshouses to postwar municipal housing; while spotlighting resident-led campaigns. Open City’s printed guides, co-developed and authored by Okra, provide public access to local architectural and social history for a large number of tours self-led by individuals and groups.

Consultation with stakeholders

Consultation is at the core of the work Okra undertakes and each project has an element of consultation that feeds into the wider work carried out. Okra worked on site with the leadership team of the Sunnyside Rural Trust and its users to understand how specific needs would be integrated into the design of the building: through meetings, roundtable discussions and feedback sessions. Okra’s walking and cycling tours for Open City and the Architecture Foundation are open to the public and provide a platform for education and discussion on historical and urgent topics surrounding the built environment. Okra invite feedback from participants and residents, which is implemented where possible, to ensure the work can continue to support the communities involved.
