Year Ending: 30 April 2024

Company activities and impact

HERSANA CIC is a non-profit organisation providing tailored support to Black femmes who have faced all forms of gender-based violence. Our commitment lies in offering a unique service shaped by and for Black femmes, ensuring a holistic approach to addressing the intersectional needs of Black women, Black non-binary people, and Black trans individuals that identify with and feel safe within feminine spaces. Through years of collective and individual experiences as a service provider, we have acquired invaluable expertise in addressing critical issues such as sexual abuse, violence against Black femmes, harmful practices, financial and psychological abuse prevalent within the Black community. Our commitment to effective service delivery is evident in the development of a responsive advocacy service that centres the experiences and voices of Black femmes. To bridge existing gaps within the sector, we have crafted training materials and development manuals specifically tailored to the Black femme experience. These resources reflect our dedication to enhancing understanding, support, and empowerment within our community. Holistic Therapies Integral to our support service is the recognition that growth and healing are fundamental components of the journey toward well-being. Our Holistic Therapy service is thoughtfully designed for both individuals and groups, offering a secure and non-judgmental space where clients can explore their experiences and understand the impact. Our Holistic Therapy approach is customised to meet the specific needs of individuals or groups, and it is delivered either in person or virtually. The diverse modalities encompass counselling, trauma-informed yoga, creative art therapy groups and psychoeducational groups. By tailoring our approach and drawing on proven methods, we strive to create a therapeutic environment that fosters genuine healing and growth for each person we support. Independent Advocacy Tailored to meet the diverse needs of victims and survivors, our Advocacy service is dedicated to empowering individuals by enhancing their understanding of rights, available options, and advocating for improved representation across various agencies. This specialised Advocacy service places particular emphasis on key areas, including the criminal justice system, statutory services, housing, financial support, government benefits, and immigration. Training As a leading expert on violence against women and girls, HERSANA provides accredited and tailored training and seminars to a wide range of statutory and non-statutory organisations as well as workshops to young people, survivors and community groups. Outreach and Engagement In our efforts to connect with a broader audience encompassing Black femmes, allies, and the community at large, our Outreach and Engagement service features carefully curated activities, events, and support groups aimed at providing support, disseminating information, and fostering education. To ensure comprehensive support, our Outreach and Engagement initiatives extend beyond standalone events. We maintain and build upon the groups and forums already established in across England, actively participate in community events, offer signposting support, and, significantly, engage with the friends, families, and allies of survivors of gender-based violence. Through these multifaceted approaches, we have created a network of understanding, support, and advocacy that resonates with and empowers a diverse audience. Policy and Research We use what we learn through working on the frontlines with clients to work for national and local policy change to improve outcomes for Black femme victims and survivors of abuse and violence. We build evidence through key pieces of research. We push for legislative change, improved statutory guidance for victims, and better understanding of the needs of Black femmes around the country. The main objective of the company is to ensure that our specialist and professional services are freely available to Black femme survivors. All the critical elements of our work enable femmes to improve their mental health, trust themselves and re-take control of their lives beyond our support, and in turn ensures the impact of our work is sustainable and lasts long after our interventions have ended

Consultation with stakeholders

Our stakeholders at HERSANA are Black women, Black girls, Black trans women and Black non-binary people who identify with and feel safe in feminine spaces. HERSANA has an inclusive definition of women. We refer to our service users as Black femmes. During the financial year we have consulted with local and national partner organisations working in the field of Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) and Gender-based Violence (GBV). We have also been in consultation with wider stakeholders in the areas of Mental Health, Mentoring, Finance, Drug & Substance Misuse, Education, Careers, Social Care, Immigration and more. We are a Black femme survivor-led organisation. This means that we believe survivors’ voices must be heard to help create a safer, more equal world. This year we have continued to center our Survivors Advisory Board which aims to work with Black femmes to shape the support that they receive to ensure that our services are centred around them and informed by people with lived experiences. We have spent the last year working with thousands of Black femme survivors and tailoring our support services based on our learnings and experiences. Our stakeholders are at the centre of HERSANA’s narrative, working side by side with survivors in order to support their recovery. This approach underpins our work and is a key reason behind our organisation’s success to date.
