Climbing Calm CIC is a social enterprise using rock climbing as a therapeutic tool to support wellbeing. Our programmes with Autistic young people and Adults with Mental Health conditions, support individuals to develop their coping skills. We use the climbing wall as a stimulus to practice these skills in a controlled setting. This year, we gained funding to deliver programmes for autistic young people and autistic teenagers and young adults and a Social Prescribing Programme to support Adults with Mild to Moderate Mental Health needs. Impact monitoring This year we delivered a total of 171 sessions. These consisted of 31 sessions for adults with mental health conditions, 128 sessions for autistic children and young people, and 12 sessions for young people with SEND accessing free school meals. Our Impact monitoring found that: 96% of parents of young people reported an improvement in their child’s mental health since attending Climbing Calm. 65% of parents of young people reported an improvement in their child’s social skills and relationships since attending Climbing Calm. 75% of Adult participants with mental health conditions, experienced an improvement in their mental health since attending Climbing Calm. Feedback from adult participants included: "I found the sessions fun and it was a good way to get in some physical exercise. I would come back and do more sessions again." "I think this initiative is one of the best I have come across in regards to mental health." "I really enjoyed the experience and process of learning new skills, and the supervisors were very friendly and supportive in all situations." :I really enjoyed the sessions I made it to. They were a really welcome decompress after the end of the work week. A great way to exercise and feel good. I’d definitely return if I could." "Excellent new skill learnt, very challenging, and great help and advice from trainers." "The sessions were well organised and enjoyable. Caspian was professional and very informative, I felt very comfortable with him. Overall an excellent experience." Feedback from parents included: "The first week we saw our young person actually properly smile for the first time in ages. They barely leave the house but are keen to get to Climbing Calm so we are really pleased about that. It's a step in the right direction." "I have met two lovely parents and formed friendships with them. It’s lovely to find other parents that understand what you’re going through." "My daughter found it difficult to attend but was given warm, kind and understanding welcome. She enjoyed the experience of climbing again and how it helped her feel better ...and this has motivated her to keep returning." "A wholly positive impact. My daughter has started climbing again as a result of climbing calm after 3 year break. She has also started going bouldering on her own 3/4 a week since starting Climbing Calm which really helps with sensory regulation. As her parent it has been very inspiring seeing our daughter climb again and seeing the happiness it brings her." "The sessions have given my son an opportunity to have a hobby club he can go to ,that is especially for his needs . As a parent I feel assured knowing the staff understand and are trained in SEN and classes are designed around my child’s needs." "My YP usually struggles to engage so I think it must be a very calm, low pressure environment and they have finally discovered an activity they enjoy. It gives our YP motivation to get dressed, out of their bedroom & out of the house. That's a huge achievement." "X has thoroughly enjoyed climbing. The first few sessions were a little bit unsettling for him as it was a new experience, but thanks to the kindness and experience of the staff he has settled into a good pattern and is genuinely excited about CC, talking about it from the moment he wakes up on a Tuesday. He has also made a friend with whom he is happy to share his space, this in itself is quite remarkable." "Both myself and my wife believe CC has had a hugely positive impact on ourselves and X, introducing a new experience into his weekly activities which he thoroughly enjoys. If we is anxious and nervous about anything that has happened during the day the session will largely put those issues to rest." "As his mum and dad it's wonderful to see him flourish and be happy and hopefully in the new year as he turns 14 he'll join the 14 + Yr group so he can build relationships with the other children." "It has been great to see our son with a smile on his face at each session." "Climbing calm has given my daughter a new interest, confidence in her abilities both physical and mental." "Being able to access a sport/activity that wouldn’t usually be possible for our family" "Over time it has helped my child develop self belief and self confidence. It has helped them find friendships where they have felt lonely before. It has helped reduce stress and anxiety and is a highlight of the week that they very much look forward to." "When Jim knows he has a climbing calm session to look forward to, it genuinely positively effects his mood and wellbeing."
We consult with parents every 8-12 weeks to find out what we can do to further improve the sessions
