Company activities and impact

Grrrl Zine Fair CIC provides benefit to self publishers across the UK and those looking to learn self publishing by running self publishing events, workshops and a zine library. The company runs the 'Grrrl Zine Library' a free to access zine (self published magazine) depository, which is catalogued and upkept for the benefit of both local and regional communities by Grrrl Zine Fair. It is a resource used by the public and academics and researchers. The company creates celebration events supporting self publishers, artists, musicians and other creatives through free to access public festival style events. The company provides free resources on how the public can create their own publications and provides educational opportunities through workshops, talks, lecturers and mentoring. A breakdown of our primary activity: Zine Fairs - Grrrl Zine Fair is one of a handful of UK based self publishing fairs and provides the public an opportunity to see zines in one place and celebrate self publishing. Our fairs are free to access and contain free workshops, music and other cultural activities with no barriers to entry. Grrrl Zine Library - We maintain the Grrrl Zine Library, a free to access physical library at The Old Waterworks, Southend-on-Sea whilst continuing to collect publications for the benefit of national heritage. Since 2025 we received National Lottery Heritage Funding to create an online catalogue, also free to access at library.grrrlzinefair.com Workshops - Our education opportunities will enable participants to learn the skills needed to self publish their own zines. Creating zines can be a form of self expression, information sharing and provide an opportunity to sell their work at zine fairs or in stockists shops. - Publishing marginalised artists and writers through our yearly zine. We publish whose who are often not afforded the traditional publishing route to share their stories and alongside publishing our own zines we encourage others to publish their stories digitally on physically. We work with marginalised artists and writers to hone in their practice, provide editorial feedback, print and distribute their work. We regularly host public call outs for free and paid opportunities in the creative sector. An example being our newest zine ‘Autists and their animals’ a zine for autistic people to share their relationships with animals. We are open to submissions from those with no previous experience of being published before. This is both beneficial to artist and writer development but also to make sure the UK has a wide range of published voices. If the company makes any surplus it will be used for purchasing new publications to be added to the library collection and commissioning zine makers and artists to produce new work, as well as hosting more free to access workshops and public activity. We also take any profit from income and pay our staff and freelancers to maintain our collection and programme and deliver our public activity.
