COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

DORMOUSE BOOKS CIC

Company Number: 14144169 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 31 May 2024

Company activities and impact

We are a community bookshop with a mission to provide free literary events in Derbyshire. In the last year we’ve hosted nine free events at Reunion Deli with a variety of writers with a national (and international) platform: Kate Morgan (adult non-fiction) Ben Masters (adult nonfiction) Marianne Brooker (adult non-fiction) Manya Wilkinson (adult fiction) Polly Barton and Charlotte Whittle (translation) Glen James Brown (adult fiction) Rob Perry (adult fiction) Ambrose Parry (adult fiction) Seni Seneviratne (poetry) Attendance has varied between 30-70 people for each event. Literary events can be exclusionary across many lines, but perhaps some of the more prominent ways this manifests is in terms of class and London vs the rest of the country. Big national names don’t often visit towns like Belper. We are determined to put Belper on the literary map, while offering open, free and accessible spaces for book lovers and creatives. We’ve also welcomed students from the local secondary schools for visits and readings. We’ve given vouchers to primary and secondary schools to reward students for hard work.

Consultation with stakeholders

We have a number of stakeholders: Publishers Writers Customers and members of the community Other local businesses (who we collaborate with the host events) We consult with customers regularly to ask which writers/ kinds of writers they want to see at events. We also take on board feedback from our events to see which writers our audience want to see. We are in constant consultation with publishers (particularly small presses) to ensure we are representing new and exciting voices.

Directors' remuneration

Directors salaries totalled £16,594 during the year to 31.5.24. There were no other transactions or arrangements in connection with the remuneration of directors, or compensation for director’s loss of office, which require to be disclosed.

Transfer of assets

No transfer of assets other than for full consideration
