Company Activities and Impact Statement The project was delivered through six 6-week workshops over eight months. The first was for 15 women, the second for 30 young people, the third and fifth were for thirteen females, and the fourth and sixth for 25 young people. We started with the women’s workshop and alternated with the youths. The women’s workshop, was more focused on emotional and mental wellbeing. The workshop was well subscribed to, and we had an average of 15 women attend. It was held in the local library on a Saturday, every week for 12 weeks for 2 hours. I did a survey at the end and the feedback was good. One of the participants joined the local leisure centre and now attends on a weekly basis. Another plucked up the courage to attend a medical checkup. Another is contemplating opening up her own business to help others. All of these decisions were made as they acquired awareness and skills to make better decisions. They are now exercising the power of choice and taking responsibility for the things that they are responsible for. With regard to the overall progress across both groups of women and youth, I was able to assess the strengths and areas for improvement with regards to their needs. We identified that most individuals had reservations about talking in the group initially, so we did some ice-breaking exercises thereby giving them a voice. We found that the greatest strength of the service continues to be connect with people in their current circumstances to better understand their needs. For example, if someone had an issue with physical health, we could refer them to a local leisure centre. We were able to address practical needs and signpost accordingly. It was evident that we had created a safe space where people could open up and talk about their struggles. Once that initial hurdle was crossed there was a huge amount of dialogue and everyone participated. This conversation addressed issues such as childhood trauma, things they’d never spoken about and how this had impacted their adult lives. We empowered them to take risks and to start saying “no” to situations that didn’t serve them. With this type of project, it’s not practical to set timeframes as people have different needs and some take a longer time to process things, but once they have decided to process, they will make good progress. Some beneficiaries were ready to make changes after the first session, whereas others took longer. One of the greatest achievements was being able to help individuals have a better quality of life. Being able to help people have a better quality of life. This was achieved through workshops on managing stress and communication. A great success story was a lady who had never used WhatsApp on her phone previously. She was supported by one of our team members and the joy and excitement that ensued was phenomenal. she came to the realization that she was letting life pass her by, and now had the power to make the change that was needed. Another lady was experiencing overwhelming family conflict, Whenever she visited, she would experience paralysing anger and guilt. We helped her to identify and acknowledge the feelings and what the real trigger was. She started separating the two issues and was able to get the help she needed to overcome the emotional issue that was holding her back. Working with the youths was also very remarkable, two individuals went back to college and another started working. There are others who are getting support 2
